The opening services of th- Protestant Episcopal Convention were held yester day morning in Christ Cbnrch, Phila delphia. and were attended by a large number of people and a still larger number were nnable to gain admission the chureh. Cards of admission were distributer! as fairly as possible among the city churches, but the olergy were not able to obtain more than one two. i he door of the church waa reserved for the delegates amt the city clergy. Toe galleries were thrown open th® public. The church wan hand somely decorated for the occasion. The ohurch began to till with a con gregation that contained some of the best known men of the country. The whole congregation rose aa the blabope, between fifty and sixty, marched up the middle aisle. The venerable Pre siding Bishop Smith aud the I-ord Bishop of Rochester, England, walked together, the other prelates following them in the order of their seniority. The music waa finely rendered by a choirformedespecially for the occesiou. Among those who conducted the ser vices were theRev. Dr. H. C. Potter, of New York ; and the Lord Bishop of Rochester. Bishop Potter, of New York was to have been the preacher, hut ow ing to feebleness he was not even able be present. Bishop Clark, of Rhode Island, took his place, and took lor his subject "The Growth of the Church during the Last Hundred Years." He told of its strug gles after the Revolution, its efforts to adapt itself to its changed clrcumstan and how it has been gradually tak S sition ot leadership in thecoun e dwelt largely upon the historic character of the Episcopal. Church aud its freedom from dog i.atism in mere matters of opinion. These features, he said, have attract ed large numbers of people into the ei rch, and he hoped that the same comprehensive policy would distinguish it in the future. The sermon was listen ed to with much attention ance of the moderate Broad Church party, which has so recently gained an advantage in the election of Dr. H. C. Potter as Assistant Bishop of New York. Many of the delegates say in private that this party is rapidly gain ing ascendency in the Church. The House of Bishops met for organi zation after the services, aud elected Dr. H.C. Potter secretary. At 4 o'clock the House of Clerical and Lay Depu ties met for organization in the Church of Holy Trinity, which is much better adapted for the meeliug than Christ Church. The House was cailed to or der by the Secretary, the Rev. C. I. Hutchins. Among the persons nominated for President of the House were the Rev Drs. Harrison, of Troy ; Dix, of New York ; Leeds, of Balrimore ; C. H. Hall,of Brooklyn ; E. E. Beardslee, of New Haven ; and Senator Edmunds, of Vermont, Drs. Dix and Leeds declined to al low their names to he used,and Senator Edmunds created much laughter by stating that he was for a Presidency of anything. Surgeon Main, of the Marin® Hospital service at Brownsville, Texas, report* that the yellow fever continues, " the reigning terror" in MazatUn, Mexico. Yellow fever has existed at Panama since April, but almost exclu sively among the natives. It has re cently become more malignant and is spreading. Washington, October 3—General Swaim says there is no truth in the published statement that the project of erecting a monument to Gartleld iu Washington under the auspices of the Army of the Cumberland has been abandoned and that the funds collected for that purpose will be used iu tlie erection of a monument in Cleveland.
