Haï the don and lall anderclanding of the precept la not common. It la not Always from fob# iod distilrbuion without that the caaüe needs defense, lor the Inner famishing and comfort also reqaire to Im diligently looked alter. When this is done, lor "castle" we enhetitute the better and pleasanter word "homo " And the home should be in the beat and highest sense the '•castle'' lor man, woman and child. That good old household word comes to us Iront the Saxon and the related languages; and there is no room for doubt that it is a power among all peo ples In whose languages the world is at home. An old English poet says, "home is the sacred refuge of life," and no modern poet, laureate or oilier, has compressed into one line more truth and poetry. But home is what we make it. It may be a sacred refuge, or it may be a mere place of call for breakfast and. dinner, and a shelter tor the sleeping hours when there is nothing abroad to keep men awake. It may be destitute ot attractions, a tolerated spot, instead of a coveted haven. If Ihia be the case the lault is with those who, by their own conduct, make it uninvit ing. Home may be a mere prison (well furnished or otherwise) for the women of the household, while the men look abroad for their interests and diversions. It the women do break bounds sometimes and find their amusements abroad, what truant bus hand has a right to blame a truant wife? And when husband« and wives are runsgatos, continuing in scarce ness, who need It« surprised that the children prefer "all-out doors" to all that they can find Indoors? While there has been a tendency among men to seek "club life," and the women have to some degree retali ated by getting up societies of their own, to only some of which men have the latch-key or other "open sesame," there never was a time when the ap paratus lor home occupation and en joyment was more abuudaut and ac cessible. Never were dwelling« of all grades in expensu more comfortable and con venient. Whoever desires to make home attractive can with his wife and other women and girls of the house hold do so. The man Is, however, moat happy who, at the door as he en ters. "relaxes his ponderous strength and leans to hear," and hastens to do whatever the mistress of the castle home directs. Wc are making no pies, however, for lame and sleepy slay-at homc-it.veness. Oo abroad at proper times, men and women and children, too; only make home a nice place and much desired to come hack to. But men, women and children have ditlerent views and pursuits That is all thu belter tor a complete union, where neither has anything to conceal. The strength of a rope is in Its many strands, and a united household aud a happy one is that in which the thoughts and purposes ot the inmates are well twined together. "Well, everybody concedes that," some one will -ay. Yes, but if the concession is only in words, common place as these expressions are, there are people who do not act their thoughts. The proof of this is found in the daily story of the fuiilts. follies and even crimes ol men, high and low, rich and poor, who diil uot get their first Inspiration for evil deeds at home. Certainly here are some wretched homes, where the spirit of evil seems to ho in possession. Bat the memliers of such households commonly learn their evil out of noors, and their bad proficiency and united experience re verse the line already quoted that home is a sacred refuge. Of lew homes, however, can it lie said that there is no good controlling influence in them. And in all homes there is room lor a constantly rising apprecia tion of tho sacrcdness of the earliest bond which binds human beings to gether—the family tie. to G lha lha the a I la M ln 10 In In 11 to l'KSHLN OF WISDOM It is impossible to m&ko people im de T9 Und their ignorance, for it re quires knowledge to perceive it; and therefore he tha* can perceive it, hath it not. Some people have no perspective in their conscience. Their moral convic tions are the same on all subjects. They are like a reader who speaks every word with equal emphasis. Woman's necessity is to lose herself If she be —to givu horself away, hindered from doing this, in tbe sweet and utter lorgettuineBS of a noble and untbwarted affection, ber next impulse is to self sacrifice. Men are not to be judged by their looks, habits and appearances, but by the character ol their lives and conver sations, and by their works, ter that a man's own worka than that another man's words should praise him. The spirit of conciliation puts peace, love and hermony far above trifles; it buries petty selfishness, it inflicts no unnecessary wounds, it lends a cour tesy and grace to actions, a charm lo presence, a dignity to character, and a never-tailing spring ot happiness to life. 'Tia bet Every one who values his or her happiness and peace of mind in this world would do well to cultivate pa tience. Without it a man is like a ship minus a rudder, at the mercy of Alia impulses, which, if he obeys, may lead him into all sorts of difficulties and disasters that may even take a lifetime to undo. Opening our new store addition late in the Spring, we are, naturally, not able to oerfect our ar rangements the first season. Luring the entire Summer we have been in a state of preparation, with an army of workmen busily engaged day and night in thoroughly renovating our o'd Store premises, so that in conve niences foi customers and in tacilities for th; transaction of business they will fully correspond with the new additional buildings, which have also been perfected. This work of preparation and of finishing is at last accomplished, and we are able to open The Autumn of 1887 Equipped for business in a way that we have never been before With more space devoted to the sale of Dry Goods than any other house in America—more than double the number of squire feet heretofore occupied by us with the same goods—we shall hope the crowding of former sea sons will be avoided, and that our great army o! patrons will be most comfortably served at all times. With the large additional space and vast increase of facilities for the transaction of business we have extended our lines in every direction, and dating many months back we have made preparations for this season far exceeding all that we have ever attempted in the past. We now invite the public to view our arrangements, and, in particular, to inspect the great array of FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC STUFFS, which from this day forward will be displayed on our V unters, confident as we are in the belief that no American house can hope to exceed them. THE 27th AND LAST PUBLIC SALE -OF— 50 BUILDING LOTS, ON INSTALMENTS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1,1887, IN THE TWELFTH WARD, AT 4 O'CLOCK P. M. These lots are all desirable; the terms are such that anyone may secure one. The opportunity to accumulate money is great; before another sale occurs the Front Street Railway will be continued, the new public school and a large church will be erected, numbers of new houses are now building and more will be built, also a large manufactory will be established. Do not believe this advertisement, but go and look for your self what is being done; you can then readily decide if these are facts or not. Now this is positively the last sale for at least one year, and no doubt all the improvements mentioned will be then finished, and as a matter ol fact, all the property adjacent will thribble in value, besides you cannot buy them on instalments, then you will say, well, I did not know that this would be the case. So we advise people who desire to save their earnincs and who wish fo get good homes to buy now. If you wish large profits buy now. Title—Guaranteed. Terms—$10 cash on each lot as soon as knocked off and S> per month until piid for, or 5 per t ent. off for cash. Plots given at sale. Hacks leave Sixth and Market stree's at 3 30 o'clock. 1 THOMAS M.
