There were lutlf a dozen of us, and we were killing time in a comlortable enough hotel in a little village not far from ßrattlnboro, Vt It was a terri hie night late in November, with a high, raw wind, and a pitiless rain. The sort of a night on which, accord ing to Tom Hood, a kind-hearted farmer in pure pity would take in his scarecrow. The members of the com pany were stranger* to one another, thrown together by the chance of travel. But they all seemed socially inclined, and as they sat around the big fire that blazed on Ihc ample hearth of the bar room each one of them contributed something more of less interesting to the conversation. All except a tall, thin, loose-jointed fellow who sat with his hands deep in his trousers' pocket, apparently given over to meditation. At length, how ever, something was said which arous ed him. •T got one «f them confidence (VI ler'a cirk'lars today," remarked a big, Jolly drover. "It came to Ike Bliv vins.and Ike he allowed that lie didn't have no use tor it and tossed it over terme. Tue cuss writes his cirk'lars mighty cunnin'. Just listen to him." With that the drover produced the circular iront one of his pockets aud read it aloud. It wan the familiar tempting liait for over-confiding gud geons. The writer remarked that the man whom he was addressing hod been mentioned to him as a person who knew a good chance to make money when he saw it, and who also knew how to keep his month shut and do business on the quiet. Did the mut want to buy some "green goods" so well sxccutcd as absolutely to duly detection* If so, it would he worth bis while to run down to Boston and see the writer, who would treat him fair and square and put him in the way of making Mb fortune. When the drover had advanced thus lar in bis reading the tali fellow referred lo broke in with a low. rich chuckle. The drover instantly turned to him with the query: '•He? you bin Ibar, stranger?' 1 "Oh, go oa with your reading," answered the other, shaking with laoghler as he spoke. The rest of us pricked up our ears with pleasarahlo anticipation, while the drover rejoined, replacing the cir cular in his pocket: "Oh, this paper ain't of no particular account, let's The tall man hesi came ha have your story. Uteri, gazed straight ahead on a line with the top ot his boota as If inquir ing of the tire whether or not he should unbosom himself. Apparently the tire seconded the drover's request for after a while, burying hi* hands still deeper in his pockets and with hi* eyes fixed so intently upon the blazing logs betöre him as to produce the im pression of one talking to himself, he unfolded to us this tale about as I re produce it. II. Gentlemen, I'm almost ô0 ysarB old. What 1 tjll you happened more than a quarter oi a century back; in fact, when I vt as still a youngster. Per Laos some of the rest ot you once had wild oats that you were foolish enough to soif. The worst use you can put wild oats to is to sow them. Hut that's neither Imre aor there. 1 got one ol tlioee "green goods" circulars, «o-cal 1 - ed, in the summer of 18ö8. I woe then living in Mains. It came to me from Hoston by mail. Well, I was a -trip ling, inexperienced, greener than grass, reckless and tolerably fond money. The oirealnr appealed to my cupidity, and I determined to slip down to Boston to see what the green goods were like. 1 had $4,000 in a bank ia Augusta, a legacy from an aunt, and I drew ou: $1,000 before I left Maine, determined if the counter feits were first class lo invest all oi it in them. Of course I waa an ass and something worse—but let that pass. The circular said when I got to Bos ton 1 was to go to a certain saloon in the south end of the town and inquire tor riamuel Hail, and that to preveut any mistake in regard to who was who on meeting Samuel I was to return to him the circular is the cnvclepo in which it came, I obeyed these direc tions and had little difiieu tjr in finding Samuel. He wore patent leather boots and a plug hat with crape half way to its top. I remember thinking he must have lately lost a relative, and that it was a little rough on hi3 feelings to intrude business upon his sorrow. But his manner reassured me. He greeted me with great cordiality and presently invited me to go around to his rooms and see the green goods. His rooms proved to he at the lop ot a high build ing in another part of the town. Reaching them lie took a big leather wallet lrora one of his pockets and spread out on the table before me a number of new crisp greenbacks— fives, tens, twenties and tithe*. I ex amined thum wilh perfect amazement, never having dreamed that counterfeit ing could he carried to such a pitch of perfection. Alter 1 had cuielnlly in spected the samples Samuel remarked in earnest tones: "Now, I don't want you to take these goods solely on my representa tion. I alwaya treat my customers fair and square, and don't wish them to trade witli me unless they are per fectly satisfied that they are getting the worth of their money. Suppose you go out on the street ami test these goods. Here, take these," (handing me a five, a ten and a twenty) "go to a bank or a broker's oftiae and see if you have any difficulty in changing them. That's a conclusive test of their merit, isn't it?" I replied that I didn't see how a test conld be mere satisfactory, and alter a little urging I did as Samuel sug gested Taking the twenty into a broker's office, not without trepidation, I asked to lie accommodated with four fives tor it. The broker handed me lour fives quicker than a wink. Next I went into a I tank, and produaing my two other samples inqnirsd of the tel ler if they wero good, lie sharply scrutinized them and answered "good as tho wheat." That settles it. I re turned to Satnnel quite prepared to in vest my entire $1,000 in his excellent green goods, bitterly regretting that 1 hadn't my remaining $8,000 with me. "Well," said Samuel wilh the smile ot confidence upon his face as I re-en tered his rooms, "how did my goods stand the test?" I made my report, whereupon he continued wilh the air of Old Heliability himaell, "I'd acorn to bring a man clear down from Maine p«r rei. or of F S is pi 8 to to purchase goods of me that were not A. No. 1.'' Well, after some further talk I pur chased $lO,UOO of the i-recn goods ol Samuel, guying mv $1,000 fur them. He remarked at this point that he was not accustomed to give every customer that came along as good terms as he offered me, hut that he bad taken a great fancy to me because I reminded him of a pet cousin of his, a great favorite in society, who had died a few years previous. With thiB he es cused himself, saying he would go and get me the green goods. He was alieenl about ball an hour and on his return counted out $10,000 in my pres ence, most of them in twenties and fifties. This done he placed the billtt in a neat black satchel, which he generously offered to give me without extra charge, locked the satchel and handed me the key, remarking "there yon are." Then I handed over my thousand dollars. He counted the money and carefully deposited it in an inside pocket of his vest wilh the one word, "correct." Then he quietly ob serves! in tones of fatherly solicitation: "If I were you I'd have that satchel sent to your address in Maine by ex press. Its the safest plan." While me this advice there at the door. Samuel exclaimed in an excited whisper: "Place your satchel in that closet over there and keep mum—there's no tell ing what that is." Accordingly I placed tile satchel in the closet and kept mum. The knock was repeated. •'(.'ome in," said Bam cel looking, fashionably dressed gentle man entered, who on observing me remarked, "Ah, Samuel, I see you have company, so I will not su>p now. Can I have word with you?" Samuel excused himself to me as politely as you please and, going to the door, conversed with hi« triend lor a few minutes. Apparently the subject of their conversation was ol an agreeable nature, for they both laughed heartily. Presently Samuel came back, told me one or two good stories, and then sug gested that we proceed to the express office. I assented, whereupon he went to the closet, returned with my satchel, and we started out. LConclusion to morrow.] Ur.
