H. Buadt, Chief Marshal. John O'Byrne, Esq., of the County Exec utive Committee, reported that at a meet ing of that committee, held on Saturday last, it was recommended that a series of meetings be held In all the wards, and on motion the recommendation was adopted. On motion the following named gentle men were appointed a committee on music: Wm. Bareford, John G-. Glatts, and D. Menton. The Bulkhead Shoals. The Bulkhead Shoals, near New Castle, are thus spoken of by the Philadelphia "Even ing Bulletin:'' The bulkhead Shoals, In the Delaware river, near New Castle, are loved by pilots, sea captains, and river men generally, about as much as a boy loves castor oil and mo lasses. In fact, the Bulkhead Shoals are shunned as much by mariners as thirty second cousins coming to the Centennial are by cross mothers-in law. But on the 15th of next month the lights on Bulkhead Shoals will be lighted for the first time, and then mariners will have an easier time com ing up or goingdown the river. This fact was communtcated to day to a "Bulletin" reporter In conversation with Gen. Reynolds, lighthouse engineer. "That lighthouse there," he said, pointing his fin ger to a dot on the chart of the Delaware river and bay, "is the Brandywine light; it has stood there for twenty five years. Then using his finger.iB place of a vessel he showed how different crafts coming up the river would steer to the starboard or larboard as occasion would require to keep clear of dangerous reefs, &c. There are to be two sets of range lights above and below New Castle, and when these are used It will be easier to navigate the river at night than during the day, be cause the lights will give the pilot a surer course. Range lights are so called because one lighi Is placed a mile or so in the rear of the another, shining one above the other, and if these are kept In sight there will be little danger of running onto shoals and other bad places. Some time in December a light will be placed at Port Penn, and then the Delaware will be one of the best lighted rivers In the country. While the new lighthouses are a great convenience and positive advance, yet their location promises to work Injury in one re spect—the removal of the Reedy Island light. Merchants, shipper, vessel owners and others disapprove of the putting out of this light, and It Is hoped that It will not be done. It ought to be kept as a fog station and It Is of much importance to the navi gation of the river. } A Frightful Runaway. [West Chester Local News,] On Wednesday morning last, while Fran cis A. Brown and brother, of Nottingham, were engaged In handling corn fodder, the front standard of the bay ladder suddenly broke, throwing him and a few bundles of fodder between the horses and wagon, which frightened the horses and started them to running at a fearful speed, dragging Mr. B. upon the tongue in a perilous position, but fortunately he escaped with a few slight In. juries. The horses,. after running some distauce, rushed through two pale fences, scattering pales in confusion, and ran off the end of a small bridge into the mill race, where they came to a stand still. The vi cious animals were immediately unhitched from the wagon, and their driver released from his unpleasant position. The horses, most luckily, were not Injured much, but their ardor was somewhat cooled by their bath ^the race. A Sew Democratic Club.
