ton had the carcass of a cow that had drop*
ped dead on t he road conveyed to his
■laaghter-house, promising the owner of
tha beaat that ha wauld pay him the val
ue of the hide and tallow. The intention
apparently was to cut cut up the carcass
for the market, but the infamous project
was frustrated by the police and the in
spector of meats. The sale of meals con
demned by the inspector can be punished
only by a small fine. It ought to be made
a criminal aet and punished by imprison
ment; and tha same penalty should attach
to the sale ofthe flesh of any diseased ani
mal, whether the meat may have been
condemned or not. The sale ( of milk
from diseased cows should be similarly
dealt with.
Americans have no rightful cause for
complaint, so far as the award of prize* at
the Paris exhibition are concerned. They
will carry away seven hundred and fifty el
them, whieh, all things considered, is as
many as they could reasonably have hoped
for. Of these ten ar* grand prizes, one
hundred and thirty four gold medals, two
hundred silver medals, diplomas, honorable
mention, etc They have fared admirably
well, no *ther nation having received so
many tokens of appreciation for a like
number of exhibits.
The rowing championship having been
decided in Hanlan's favor, the next thing
of national importance to be settled is,
whether Hopeful or R&rus is the speedier
hone. There is a difference of a second or
two in the tim« made by them respectively
but no true turfman will sleep soundly
until the problem is solved.
The total number of deaths from yel
low fever up to last Wednesday night is
estimated at 11,464. Frosts are now an
nounced from various points, and it ia
hoped that the terrible pestilesce will
soon abate its ravages.
