The Circus. The editor of the Marshall (la.) Statesman says that after consider ing tlie question all winter, he cr>nr>o,j to tpn conclusion evprv spring that ti e circus is immoral. But when the hill poster comes along with the t> g pictures, lie* weaken*, and he changes hie mind as follows: “As we g /. • at the lions, tigers and monkeys and think that na ture made them ail, wo are not sore that they are immoral. And when we look at the beautiful young lady, with nothing on but a blue ribbon aroun.l her waist, with one leg pointing to 5 o’clock and the other to high noon, and remember that nature made her too, just as site is, except the blue nbbou, we begin to lean up to the cireu-. But when the brass bands begin to play and theeli pbants go round, we rush in for a front seat to get ahead of tlie ministers, who jo to see the animals, and who al ways wear stove-pipe l ats and won’t sit down in front. A IMsiinitnl King In a Horst* m Hoof. (Richmond (Kjr.) Register ) A wealthy physician of Mur freesboro’, Term.. bought a 41,bOO diamond ring for his daughter. About three years since, while riding ou', the ring was lost. It w»3 advertised and liberal rewards offered for its di=covery, but noth ing was ever heard of it. A few week* ago a child of a blacksmith was taken «ick, and the physician referred to called to sea it. While at the bedside he had occasion to mention his daughter’s name. At this tho childs mother took from her linger a ring, handed it to the physician and asked him if his daughter had recently lost a ring, for the ring contained the name he hadjuat pronounced. The physician said she had not, but some years ago she lost a dia mond ring, aud as iris eyes fell up on the sparkling object ho recog nized his daughter's long-lost trea sure The lady said iter husband had found it in tho bottom of a horse’s foot only a few days be fore that, while cleaning out the hoof for the purpose of shoeing him. One small diamond was missing. Saved by a Water Bn Halo. The water buffalo is an animal much in u-e in Singapore for pur pose of draught. It is a dull, heavy iookihg animal, slow at work and disgusting in appoar ance, but remarkable for sagacity and attachment to its native keep ers. It ha?, however, a particular antipathy to a European, and will immediately detect him in a crowd. Its disiikc to and courage in attacking a tiger i* well known all over India. Not long ago, as t Malayan boy, who was employ ed by his parents in herding water buffalos, was rriving hisebarge by the borders of the jungle, a tiger made a sudden spring and seized the lad by the thigh, and was dragging him off, when the two old buffalos, heariag the shriek of distress from the well-known voice of their little attendant, turned around and charged with their usual rapidity. The tiger, thus closely pressed, was obliged to drop his prey to defend himself. While one buffalo successfully drove away the tiger the other kept guard over the boy. Later in tlie evening, when tho anxious father, alarmed, came out with at tendants to seek his child, he found that the whole herd with the ex ception of the two old buffalos had dispersed themselves to feed, but that they were still there— one standing over the bleeding body of their little friend, while the other kept watch on the edge ot the jungle for the return of the tiger. What did you say ? A statistican of of the Agricul ture Department Is ot the opinion that 1 lie number of hogs and sheep in thia country is a great deal heavier than was ertsmated. The number of hogs last year was 32, 000,00-) Hogs slaughtered at packing houses and by farmers during the year ending March l»t, last, was not less than 30,000, 000.' The Census report, which is anxiously looked for, will un doubtedly irjereas the estimate. The number of sheep was estima ted at 40.000,000, while the wool clip amounted lo 250,000,000 lb*.
