A Southern Tornado. Chattanooga, Tknn., March 21.— The worst storm which him visited this section in fifty tears, last night formed near Calhoun, Ga . between hero and Atlanta, and drifted North east up the Tennessee Valley. At Calhoun the storm was the most pile nomenal that has ever visited this , country. Small houses were lifted bodily into the air and deposited con i siderable distances from 1 heir Conn- : dations. The house of a widow with five sleeping babes was entirely de molished and the inhabitants with difficult removed from the ruins. ! Fortunately they were not injured ! beyond a few scratches. The most peculiar features of the storm was £g its teriiblc \ it.y. Near Lcnoirs, a small hamlet between this city and i Knoxville, the residence of Hon. J. ' H. Williams was torn to shreds, i Mrs. Williams, the ole occupant, j who was asleep in bed, was blown ; into the river and found with her hair ; ? wrapped tightly about her neck and lace. Near London, Tcnn., the four houses of George Moses and Andrew Worley were demolished. In the first house five persons wire hurt. In the second house eight people lay in the ruins for hours until the own er, who was in an uninjured house aear-hy, was roused by the cries of ' his children. Pieces of bacon from the biaokt -house were blown two , miles. The tornado in places clear ed the mound completely of grass, ami a for at of timber was inown as if with i great scythe. A heavy bu reau was found a mile from the housi that, had contained it- At Lumber City, Gm , a Mr. Whiddon and lour of his employees were awakened by the storm and ran out into the street. Tht v had hardly reached the road before the house they had been in was raised by t he wind and blown over on them, killing all five of tiie men. At Salt Springs. Ga.. a colored man and his wife had re tired when the storm came. The house was blown down, killing the man instantly and not injuring the woman at all. i ;trs Thrown into a Hirer. Pittsburg, March 21.—A disas trons freight wreck occurred at Green Springs, on the Pittsburg, Virginia and Charleston Railway, this morn ing. The train struck a huge bould er that had fallen upon the track. The engine and four cars of coke were thrown over a fifteen foot embank ment into the Monongabela River and totally wrecked. Engines Thos. Buchanan was probably fatally scald ed about the head and face. Brake jnan F. B. Smith had his skull frac iurecl and several bones broken. The Cumberland Coal Trade. Cumberland, Md., March 20.—The shipments from the mines of the Cumberland coal region for the week ended Saturday March 17th, 1888, wero 62,725 tons, and for the year to date, 664,279 tons, an increase of 45,209 tons, as compared with the corresponding period of 1887. The shipments to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and local points for the week 53,831 tons, and for the year to date 557,138 tons, a decrease of 26,263 tons, as compared with Inst year. The shipments to the Penn sylvania Railroad were for the week 8,894 tons, and for the year 107,141 tans, as increase of 77,095 tons, as compared with the year 1887. There were no shipments, to the Chesa peake and Ohio Canal, being a de crease of 5,624 tons over last year. A West Virginian's Good Record Washington, D. C.,March 19.—E. J. Simpson, formerly of Martinsburg, but now Superintendent of Indian Schools in the Indian Territory, was in the city on Friday last. lie came east for the purpose of taking his family to the Indian Territory. De partment officials sav that no man in the Indian service has a higher stand ing than Mr. Simpson. The Mugwump is to-day the most mournful figure in all the arena of political action. He stands on the wearv desert between the devil and the deep sea with nothing ahead of him which he wan look forward to with hope and nothing behind him which he can look back to with pride. itafliuiore Marki ts {Correct d ■•(••k'y I y lllandlord.
