CONDUCTOR IS CAUGHT AT CAMDEN STATION. A BAD RECORD. Last night upon the arrival at Camden Station of the limited ex press from Chicago, Chief Detective Grannan, of the Baltimore and Ohio I service, arrested .Tosenii Haves ns j he stepped irom the train and lodged j him in the Southern Police Station , upon the charge of being a fugiti c j from justice. To a reporter of 77, c America Detective Grannan said that Ilaycs w as a desperate thief and a grand rascal. Hi* reputation as a desperate man is well known in Wash- j irjgton, Harrisburg and Chamber4 burg, Pennsylvania, the Valley of Virginia and the country between Hagerstown anil Cumberland, Wheel ing and Pittsburg. He is wanted by the authorities at Washington, where he is indicted upon Uic charge of burglary cf silverware and other -al ualiles from private dwellings, and also upon the charge of attempted mrder by cutting a man's stomach open with :t razor, and the shootiug of a policeman. He is also wanted by the authorities of Pennsylvania i for participation in robberies within | the State. About three months ago j he, in company with three associates, took possession of a freight Lain j passing over the first, division of the j Haltimore and Ohio Road When I the conductor undertook to protect his train Hayes placed a cockeu re volver at Lis head and commanded him to keep still under penalty of death. When the train reached Fred erick Junction. Hayes ai- ! his assn j ciates lett it, but boai led the next train. Word was telegraphed from Frederick Junction and Detective Lloyd and Bins, of the Haiti more and Ohio force, with Police Officers Vansant and Lilly, of Ellieott City, were sent to intercept Hayes and his associates. The officers intercepted the train at Gray’s water station, and found their game on top of the freight oars, ns soon as Hayes &nu his associates saw the ofiieers, they opened up fire, and, ..hen the ollS cers returned the lire, the former ran over the tops of the* cars and »nto the cab o. the engine. The engiueci dealt one of the desperadoes a terii bio blow with a monkey wrench and iaid him out. ilayes ami his other associates made their escape. The one laid out by the engineer was doctored up, and after regaining his reasoning powers, told all about the aflair. About the latter part of June, De tective Wirts succeeded in capturing Haves at Charlestown, West Vir ginia, and took him to Hagerstown, Washington county, this state, and charged him with attempting to kill Conductor George Fisher. After a bearing belore a magistrate, where Conductor Fisher fully identified Hayes and testified against him, he was committed to jail. On the morn ing of July fith, Hayes, aided by two safe-blowers who were confined in jail with him, assaulted thejuilor, and, alter beating him, made good their escape. The safe-blowers had only been captured a few days before by Detective Giordan, of the L>. A O. force, after they had cracked a number of safes along the lino of the road. One of the escaped safe-blow - ers was re-captured the same day, but the other one and Ilayes got away. Ilayes is a blight mulatto, about thirty years ol age, and a koen looking chap. He was bom and raised in 1’lattsburg, New York, and passed a good portion of his life in that section of country, being em ployed as porter on sleeping ears. He has a wife in this city residing on Vincent alley, and his visit here was for the purpose of seeing her. Depot I'olieemau Sloan, of Martins burg, heard that Hayes had passed that point on the Chicago express on his way to Baltimore to see his wife, and telegraphed Detective Granuan to that eifect. Detective Graunou w ill have him returned to the Hagerstown jail to answer the charge of attempting to kill Conduc tor Fisher.—Baltimore Amerimn, 7th ind. __ A Strike Settled. Chahleston, \V. The strike of the curb-cutters for the city contractors, which took place yesterday on account of the employ ment of non-union men to set curb ing, was settled by the union last night, who agreed that contractors could have curbing set by either union or non union men, but all curb ing musu be done by union stonema sons.
