' -t *9' ~n_ 1 i.. _)LBT8 Of A £ a remake Forest to 3e’ Sold to Satisfy j Ailsbury’s Creditors. London. Dec. 14.—In jdugust last the ; Marquis of Ailsbury applied to Justice i Striling, of the lord chancellor's ciurt, for application to sell his estate. Silver- | nnke forest. He gave as his gcason for j dc: iring to sell the property that he 1 wanted the money which the estate would sell for the purpose of paying his J debts. It is said that the marquis owes j $750,000, the price asked for the property, I and this sum Lord Iveagh agreed to pay j if (he court would authorize the salo. j The application was opposed by the j other heirs on the ground that usurers ; would alone reap any bonefit from the ; sale. Judge Striling declined to grant , the required permission. From this decision the marquis np- j pealed, and the case was carried to the court of appeal. This court has just handed down an opinion overruling the decision of the Lord Chancellor's court and sanctioning the sale of Savernake forest, amt it is expected that Lord Iveagh will soon he in possession of the property. Savernake forest, when it came into possession of the present Marquis of Ail esbury was one of the “show” places of England. The estate comprises 40,000 acres, and is a magnificent property des pite the fact that its present owner has out down most of the gigantic oaks for which, among other things, the place was noted.__ Dom IVilro May Ilest in Brazil. Rio DF, Janeiro, Dec. 14—It is stated authoritively that the Brazilian govern ment will present no remonstrance to France on the subject of Dom Pedro's obsequies, although urged by the ex treme republic element to do so. Nego tiations are going on relative to the burial of Dom Pedro in Brazil, and if this is consented to the remains of the empress will likewise be removed here. The (iremic military and Centro naval clubs have passed resolutions endorsing President Peixotto. This disposes of the reports of dissension between the army and the navy as to the present govern ment. _ A Man’s Strange Disappearance. Nyack, N. Y., Dec. 14.—Edward H. Cole, one of Nyack's most widely known citizens, clerk of the village, secretary of the board of education and holder of other responsible positions, mysteriously disappeared from his home Saturday and no tidings of him have yet been re ceived. As inquiry discloses that he was not a passenger on any train or boat it is feared he wandered away in the woods while his mind was affected. Mr. Cole, who is a graduate of Williams college, is a lawyer by profession and a book keeper in a large real estate and insur ance establishment. Physician Arrested for Murder. Evansville, Ind., Dec. 14.—Dr. Janies D. Massey was arrested in Warrick county for the murder of J. L. Kenakeo at Owenton, Ky., Oct. 11. Both men were prominent in Owen county. Keu akee, it is claimed, circulated a report that Dr. Massie was intimate with his 18-year-old niece. The latter explained that he was treating the girl in a pro fessional manner and asked for a retrac tion. It was refused and Massie served notice that he would kill Kenakee the next time he met him. Massie admits the murder. Governor Portella Resigns. Rio Janeiro, Dec. 14.—A public meet ing was held in this city at which strong protests were made against the imperial honors paid by France to the late ex emperor of Brazil on the occasion of his funeral in Paris on Thursday. Portella finally decided to accede to the request of the government that he resign as governor of Rio Janeiro and has sent in his resignation. He will be succeeded by Admiral Silveira. St. John's Divorce Doubtful. London, Dec. 14.—Although replete •with every phase of squalid immortality and intrigue, the St. John divorce case does not attract much attention. The general opinion is that St. John will not get her divorce. Marius publicly admits his adultery since his separation from his wife, but St. John's charges of cru elty seem very feeble to the minds of the British jury. Fatal Accident on a Farm. Mayville, Mich., Dee. 14.—While thrashing was in progress on the farm of F. Boise, near here, the engine boilei burst. Richard Furland was instantly killed. Bert Bambnrg was so badly hurt that he died in an hour, and James Mitchell was seriously injured. The barn and contents were burned with a loss of $3,000. Held for Kidnapping Baby Beals. Kansas City, Dec. 14.—Mrs. Lizzie Dennis, alias Smith, was held to await the action of the grand jury on the charge of kidnapping little “junior” Beals. Bail was fixed at $5,000. Duke of Devonshire Dying. London, Dec. 14.—TheDukeof Devon shire is growing weaker, aud may die at any moment. The Weather. Fair; northwesterly winds; no change in temperature. NUGGETS OP NEW3. The Pottsvllle (Pa.) Miners’ Journal, founded In 1826, was sold by the sheriff for *3,550. At Bedford, Ind., the special grand jury brought in an indictment against Joseph Findley, charging him with the murder of Mrs. Soldneifer last May. At Sandusky, O., John Unclirich, chief of the fire department, was killed by fall ing through the hatchway of the propeller R. E. Schuck, while making an inspection for fire. A prominent horsemaB, D. J. Owens, known throughout the country, dropped dead at Battle Creek, Mich. He was nearly 80 years old, and had been in the livery business in Battle Creek for forty years. A dispatch from Mascouta, Ills,, says la grippe is prevailing to a large extent In that section of the state. There are many serious cases of the disease in the city and in the country east and north of that place. It has become almost epidemic. Fire destroyed one dwelling and two business houses in the eastern part of Mid dleboro, Ky., belonging to J. R. Booth. During the progress of the fire Policemen Mitchell endeavored to save a large can of gasoliue when it exploded in his hands, burning him almost beyond recognition. The First Step. Some Light Thrown Upon the Mean ing of Fnad Pacha’s Mysterious Special Mission to Liradia— Russia Agrees to Keep England Our of the Dardanelles. Paris, Dec. 14.—William the excit able continues to disturb the world by the changing and chopping of his pol icy. Alexander the impassive is calmly carrying out a steady plan. The public knows what appears on the surface. It is familiar with the commercial designs of the Triple Alliance, which have been directed against Russia and her friends. But it knows less of the movements of the czar, who goes on extending the ramifications of his policy. An understanding with France is as sured. Agreements with Denmark, Servia and Montenegro are probable. Before long we may hear of a compact with Greece and Sweden, and lastly with Turkey. The czar is aiming at a union I of the cross and crescent. Some time ago it was rumored in dij> j lomatic circles at Constantinople that the sultan had sent a special embassy to | the czar. The representatives of the I nations in the Triple Alliance took alarm | and called upon the grand vizier to ask | for an explanation. By order of the j sultan and grand vizier replied that j Fnad Pacha had teen charged with a j mission to tho Russian monarch. The Sultan Sends an Envoy. For fear of arousing suspicion negotia tions have not teen conducted by M. Nelidoff, the accredited envoy of Russia to Constantinople, bnt through the French embassy. It was the first offi cial expression of the Franco-liussian union. Since then the truth has become known to the European governments and has stirred up much anger in Berlin. Alexander assured Fuad Pacha that Turkey had no need to fear Russia, who was predestined by nature to be her ally. England Must Keep Out. He added that Turkish interests in the Black sea made it imperative to concert measures for preventing foreign fleets from entering the Dardanelles, and called attention to the fact that the de fenses of the Dardanelles were too weak and the Turkish fleet was not numerous enough to bar the way against an En glish squadron, “In the event of war,” said the czar, “we shall have to rely on ourselves to defend the Dardanelles. We can under take to make them impregnable despite the high repute of the English navy.’, Bloodshed in Colorado. Denver, Dec. 14.—About two weeks ago 500 Austrian and Italian miners, employed at the Colorado coal and iron mines, at Crested Butte, went out on strike because of a proposed reduction in wages. Since the men went out they have been very ugly. Sheriff Shares, of Gunnison, arrived there with a posse of twenty-five men to take possession and guard the mines. No sooner had the sheriff and his men alighted from the train they were attacked by about 200 armed Sicilians and Austrians, who Ije gan firing with their Winchesters. The officer held his men for a moment and then ordered them to return the fire, which they did with deadly effect, kill ing six Italians. The governor has called out tlie state militia. Two Lives on His Hands. Wheeling, W, Va., Dec. 14.-Charles Brumfield, whose murder of his father two weeks ago while ostensibly defend ing his mother from assault created such a sensation in the southern portion of the state, has killed another man, while still another wa3 shot through the head and may die. The second murder oc curred in Stone's saloon at the mouth of Big Ugly creek in Lincoln. Brumfield, George Smith, Willis Messenger and several others took part in a fight. Brumfield shot Smith through the heart and Messenger in the head. The former died instantly and the latter can scarcely live. A Fatal Accident. Grand Junction, Colo.. Dec. 14.—A fatal accident occurred on the line of the Rio Grande Western railway, thirty miles west of this city, at a small station called Ruby, by which Dennis O’Neill, section foreman, lost his life and three section men were fatally injured. A tree had fallen on the track, and in the hurry to move the debris giant powder was resorted to. Dynamite was frozen, and it was placed near a fire for the pur pose of thawing it out. One of the sticks exploded with the above result. All the men were Italians except the foreman. Attacked His Wife with a Ilazor. Poughkeepsie, N. Y., Dec. 14. — Frank Tone, a carman of this place, suddenly became insane yesterday after noon and attacked his wife with a razor. Her screams brought assistance, and Tone was prevented from murdering her, although m the meantime, she had been badly cut about the face, arms and hands. Tone, however, cut his own throat before he could be disarmed and bled to death. Ills Pardon Came Too Late. Cedar Rapids. A pardon for Grove had just reached the prison. l'atally Injured in a Fight.
