Clerk. Swearing Witnesses in Japan. A Japanese journal, describing the manner in which witne-'sesare sworn and evidence taken in native courts of justice, says that with the Japan ese anything to which a m in affixes his seal is more sacred than what he may sav. Hence each witness is re quired to make declaration to the effect that with a mind free from bia* in favor or against cither of the liti gating parlies, and with perfect fair ness, he will give eudenee, and af ter thi* has been read out by the Re corder of’ the e nut and handed to the witness in ihe lorui of a docu ment. the latter i expected to affix his seal to it. The same plan is adopted with the statement ol facts which, in the course of examination lie undergoes a witness makes in court. The purport of his evidence is written out by the Recorder, and before leaving the court room lie is required to make what corrections arc necessary to render the wri ten tsatement a trustworthy reoc.ord of his evidence and to guarantee its correctness by affixing his seal. Though this process occupies a good deal of time, it precludes the possi bility of the evidence given being in correctly reported, which, in trials where (lie decisi m of the court de pends largely on ora1 evidence, is a matter of much moment.—London Times.
