The Atlanta Journal says, "Presi
dent McKinley's assurance that there
ts no danger of imperlaliiim is very
much like the-dentist's promisee that

The remnants of the once great Pen
obscot' tribe of Indians now living on
an island near Oldtown, Me., have their
own form of government. At tbeir re
cent election they chose a prohibition
ist chief named Mitchell Attean by a
vote of 25 to 23.
Fred Harvey of Kansas City, Mo.,
has a mnseum of Indian relics and cur
ios. His latest addition is the robe
which was formerly owned and worn
by Geroniino, the famous Indian chief.
It was Geronimo's "dress" coat, and
was only worn by him on special occas
ions, when he wished to appear in
splendor before his people.
The Winnebago county board hBS
adopted a memorial' to the Wisconsin
legislature asking that body to prohib
it the playing of the 'game of football
in the state of Wisconsin on the ground
that "it is dangerous to the health and
to the life of tbe persons playing it, as
it is now plByed." The' memorial was
introduced by Supervisor Hash of Men
asha, whose leg was broken in a game
of football.
Harvard's financial statement of ath
letics, which is doubtless representative,
shows that the net profits from footbBll
last Besson were 842,269, making good
the deficit in other branches of sport,
enabling the expeadlture of more than
820,000 in permanent improvements,
and leaving a net balance for the year
of 826,500. Baseball cleared 93,450
and tennis and la crosse came out
slightly ahead.
A bill looking to establishing a su
preme court for the Philippine islands
provides for five judges at $20,000 an
nual salary each. The judges of the su
preme court of the United States are
paid 910,000 each. The backers of this
measure evidently design to leave no
ground for the claim that the United
States is not giving the Philippines the
best that's to be bad in the way of gov
ernment no matter what the expense.

The Mississippi penitentiary board of
control has made its farming arrange
ments for another year, leasing the
same plantations that were worked this
year. These several big farms. all of
which are in the delta, oomprlBe 9,350
acre* of cleared land, on which 720 con
victs will be used. In addition to these,
the estate owns and farms 3,000 acree
of Its own land, on which eighty con
victs will be employed. Mississippi has
found that farming with convict labor
is profitable.
Mischievous persons visited the dairy
farm of John Anschutz, a Stowe town
ship, Pennsylvania, farmer, and adjust
ed a pair of red spectacles over the eyes
of his cross white bull, Dexter. When
this animal saw the whole world done
in crimson, be made a wild charge to
annihilate it. The side
of|tbe bam was
knocked in, several lengths of fence
prostrated, and a milkmaid barely es
caped with her life. The bnll Is now
laid up for repairs and Mr. Anschutz 1b
offering a reward of 85 for the arrest of
tbe guilty parties.
Admiral Cervera has been a popular
figure in America ever since we began
to get acquainted with him at Santiago.
His message to Lieutenant HobBon,
who is lying almost at tbe point of
death in New York, iB the expression
of a sincere Christian gentleman. He
iB the same good old admiral who treat
ed Hobson and his men with such chiv
alric generosity as to win the applause
and good will of every American citi
zen.
The people of the country join with
the gallant Spanish admiral in his ex
pressions of sympathy for Hobs'bn,
They have forgiven him the boyish
weakness which was caused by a hero
worship tbat would have taken almost
any man off bis feet, and only remem
ber the courage and gallantry which
made a brilliant page in military his

Children in Russia have away of cel
ebrating Christinas that is quite differ
ent from that of American boyB and
girls. In a certain part of ftuBsia it is
customary for the little people to dress
to represent animals and go running
about town- like wild beasts. Some
times they represent wolves, bears and
even ostriches. Of course this is^done
by dressing in the skins of wild beastB.
The boys who are not disguised as ani
mals, pretend they are the keepers,
Some of the party play musical instru
ments. Others carry torcheB, and alto
gether the sight is very weird. They
go to every house and give an enter
tainment. Then, of course, the inmates
offer them refreshmentB at the end of
the performance.
At other'places in Bussia religious
entertainments are popular. These en
tertainments are given in a small play
house with marionettes (the little fig
ures made to act by means of strings).
One boy.carries the small theater on his
shoulder. Another carries a brilliant
banner, and another a long pole, to
the end of which is fastened a lantern.
These lanterns are arranged something
like the ones used In political parades
In this county. The sideB are trans
parent, and on them are sketched
scenes representing^ the Christian his
tory of the day. The procession goes
about to every house, when the man or
woman of tbe bouse answers the call
outside, the leader asks permission to
entertain his household with the theat

Butter And Eggs.
The Maine Farmer affirmB that the
two articles of daily consumption
which have stood the test for years

Iowa Agricultural college to ascertain
definite statistics relative to the shrink
age of corn is productive of

Of all the prize winners of the day,
at the fat stock show in Chicago, per
haps the greatest amount of interest
was centered about "Dolly the Fifth."
This Is a Hereford cow, which won
the first prize in her class, and was
later auctioned off for 83,150, the great
est price ever offered for a cow. She
was owned by Clem Graves, of Bunk
-Hill, 111., and waa pnroha.ad by C-
A. Jamieeon, of Peoria, whose stock
farm is at Hamlet, Ind.

esting figures. A crib was built on a
pair of scales and filled with 7,000
pounds of corn. Once a week the corn
was weighed. During the first three
months the loss was 630 pounds or 9
per cent of the original weight, for the
second quarter the loss was 390 pounds
or 5 3-7 percent, and the last quarter
a loss of 190 pounds or 2 5-7 per cent.
The shrinkage for the year was 1,430
pounds or more than 20 per cent. At
the time of cribbing it contained 28 per
cent of moisture. According to tbe ex
periment a bushel of com weighing
80 pounds at the time of cribbing will
weigh 64 pounds at the end of the year,
providing, of course, the conditions are
similar to those encountered by the ex
experiment station.
IOWA'B CORN OBOF.
Decrease in the Shipments.
Iieport* received by tbe stats dairy
commissioner, B. P. Morton, show tbat
while the number of creameries in
Iowa increased from 964 to 994 during
tbe past year, the shipments of butter
out of the fctate decreased. The rail
way companies furnish to the state
dairy commissioner an accurate and
complete report of all butter ship
ments from the stations In Iowa.
The figures submitted represent gross
pounds, including tnbs or other recep
tacles. The gross pounds in 1899 were
91,229,579. The groBS pounds for the
year ending September 30,1900, ate 85,
380,154. Tbe commissioner's report for
the year ending May 1 showed that
there bad been a decrease in the pro
duction of bntter owing to the high
price of calves and young cattle. As
long 88 cattle bring a high price it Is
not so profitable to milk cows, and leas
butter Is produced. At the same time
there has been a slight increase in bome
consumption of butter. This amounts
to only abont 1 per cent.
The following table shows the total
butter shipments from this portion of
the state.

received by the Iowa crop and weather
service, compiled by J. It. Sage, direc
tor, show that Iowa farmers had a good
year for cropB. The corn crop was the
largest in the history of Iowa, 345,055
000 bushels, the area planted being 8
618,000 acres. The crop was remark
able in uniformity, averaging 40.3
bushelB to the acre, Bixty-three counties
having 40 to 43 bushels. The average
price is 27 cents, and the farm value,
893,164,000. Fully three quarters of the
crop will be consumed in the state, and
tbe quantity Bold outBide will bring
higher price. Tbe total value of all
farm products for the year was
805,058. The wheat crop was 21,200
000 buBhels, valued at 812,769,871 oats,
138,832,340 bushels, valued at 827,966
466 rye, 1,621,000 buBhels, valued at
8697,000 barley, 12,694,260 bushels, that
brought #4,188,000 flax, 1,222,000 bUBh
els, that brought the farmers 81,834
000. The^crop of bay is an important
one, and Iowa farmers secured 4,139,060
tons, whlcb|has returned them 831,100
,815, the largest of any crop aside from
corn. The 10,850,000 bushell of pota
oes show a value of $4,340,000. The
pasturage Is figured as worth 830,000
000 and vegetables and fruits 88,600
000.
A subscriber from Kelley, Iowa,
writes: "I have been troubled with a
few of my milk cows. The teats of the
cows will close up so tbat I can hardly
get any milk. There forms a kind of
scab on the end of the teat and if this Is
removed it Is still difficult to get tbe
milk out." The teats of the cow are li
able to various affections, which more
or less impede the flow of milk, or stop
it altogether. One of tbe chief causes
of these obstructions are small tumors
of about the sizetf a pea, which may
be felt on compressing the teat between
the finger and the thumb, and can be
often moved up. and down the teat. In
these cases a silver probe, or a knitting
needle may be passed up the teat, and
the obstruction either broken down, or
paBsed into the ndder, where they may
remain without giving furthei trouble.
These sometimes come down BO far as
to get injured and in that case produce
a Bcab over the end of the teat. This
may be the trouble in this case, al
though it is impossible to tell definitely
from the description whether the cause
