Des Moines, la., April 12.—At noon Tuesday the gavel fell in botli houses of the Iowa legislature and the thir tieth general assembly of the state ad journed, after being In session since the 11th of January. Tho-session lias been one of the busiest ever held in the state. More ttfau 1)00 bills were introduced in the two houses and of these 220 have been enacted into laws. The most Important work of the as serably caine in the last few days, us usual, and included the adoption of all the important appropriation bills, carrying with them, in rouud figures, a total of $3,725,000. Of this sutn $1,500,000 was for the general rim nlng expenses of the state government $800,080 was for tho state peual and charitable Institutions $082,000 was gf"on to the three big educational in sui.Mons, tho State university at Iowa City, the State Normal at Cedar Falls and tho State Agricultural college at^Ames $125,000 went to the estab lishment of a state dipsomaniac asy lum at Knoxvi|Ie $200,000 was as signed for use in completion of the state historical library buildings $8(5,000 yearly to the payment of sal aries of state house employes, and the balance hi sums of various sizes for many purposes. Tho assembly was as remarkable for the laws which failed of adoption as for those which were passed. Among the former were the indeterminate sentence bill, the bill creating a state board of regents for the educational Institutions, the woman's reformatory bill, the act for a state-wide primary law, and the general exemption act. The principal acts adopted and those In which the most interest was shown, were: The drainage law, the stock shippers' law, the establishment of a dlspomaniac hospital, the juvenile court law providing for taking of compfehensive agricultural census of state, and many amendments to the state insurance laws to guard against fraudulent companies. The biennial election constitutional amendment was again submitted to the people and will doubtless carry next fall. Should it do 60 the pres ent members of the legislature will hold over and the thirty-first assembly of the state will be composed of the present membership. A brief syuopsis of the joint resolu tions and laws adopted by the legis lature just ended follows: JOINT RESOLUTIONS. No. 1. Prof. Bell has been elected to the position of principal of the Central City, Iowa, High School, whereat Central City school patrons are greatly rejoiced. —A fellow not a thousand miles from here, says the Greeley Home Press, ordered a pair of rubber boots from a Chicago mail order house because they were quoted at 35 cents cheaper than dealers here asked for them. He paid 72 cents express charges and they did not fit. He is thinking of walking to Chicago to get them changed. —Masonville Enterprise:—Wil liam Buskey of Manchester visited friends here Tuesday. 13 0 John O'Connor was a Manchester caller Monday. S. M. Hogan was in Manchester Tuesday. Father O'Meara of Manchester and Father Mulligan of Winthrop, called on Father Murtaugh of this place Mon day. Will Robinson of Ryan, was looking after some of the bridges in this section Monday. Will is one of the best supervisors they over had in this end of the county. —The residence on the farm of the Dunlap estate one mile north of the Golden church, burned to the ground last Monday night. The building was occupied by Robert E. Dunlap and family who recently moved here from Nebraska. The fire caught in the second story from a defective chimney and gained such headway that it was impossible to enter the rooms above. However, nearly all the furniture on the. first floor was gotten out in safety. The builditag was insured for $400 in the Anchor Insurance Co., of Des Moines and the lumber is being hauled today from Ryan to rebuild it. Mr. Dunlap carried no insurance on liis furniture. —Miss Florence Keegan and Mr. Jerry Driscoll were .united in mar riage Tuesday morning at the Bel mont Catholic church, by Rev. H. Ryan. The bride was attended by Miss Maggie Mahoney as maid of honor and the groom by Ralph Keegan as best man. The ceremony was preformed in the presence of the immediate relatives of the con tracting parties and at its conclus ion they were tho recipients of tho congratulations of all present. A dainty wedding repast was served at the home of the bride. Tho brido is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Keegan and is known by every one as a young lady of pleasing disposition and elevating traits of character. The groom is a sturdy young farmer of good habits and has certainly made a wise choice of a life partner.
