SERK UAMPER *V-\ "Judge Parker's movements are becoming mysterious," remarks tlio (lliieago Tribune. "It is reported that before he boarded the train for Albany, ho had his shoes shitied. Beware of a tall man with dark, shiny shoes! He means mischief." An Algona ]iarty of seven just re turned from the World's fair have established a record for seeing big show on a little money. As a sample one lady started out with §25, paid 910.50 for car fare spent plenty of time at the grounds and besides visited points of interest in tho city and returned with $7.50. Tho party paid 50 cents each for lodging, did their own cooking at an expense of a little more than 10 cents a day and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Countess Tolstoi does not agree with her husband in all of his theor ies, but she agrees with tho world which worships him, and is very proud of him, and very devoted, al though her devotion has been severe ly taxed in several ways. She has copied yards of unreadable manu script while babies of various sizes were pulling at her skirts she has translated books into three or four languages, and has transformed all sorts of garments to meet tho needs of the changing sixteen, her chil dren. Since the death of Mrs. ]\.rark Twain many stories other early life with the humorist have been revived When tliey returned from their wed ding trip they found a house waiting for them, completely furnished, the gift of the bride's father, Mr. Lang don. Mr. Clemens was at a loss to express his gratitude for a few minutes. Then, however, he seized his father-in-law by his two hands and urged him, whenever ho was ill the city, to come right over and make himself as much at homo "as if it was his own house." Sioux City Journal: The doves are hatching out a second blood. The robins are hatching out a third brood the barn swallows are "build ing to hatch out a second brood. This is something unusual. What does it moan? If the biids could not raise their young so that tliey would be strong enough to fly south before tho cold weather they would not go on with their house keeping. It means a long, hot, dry spell and late fall. The weather department doesn't know it, but the birds know, and they never go wrong. Even the sparrows are building now in the open. Giving Us Tit for Tat. New Zealand takes a leaf out of our book by restricting participa tion in her coasting trade, with the result that ships of the United States will not hereafter be permit ted to carry freight from one New Zealand port to another unless" con gress opens our coasting trade to British ships. New Zealand's new act is a step toward imperial federa tion. It is taken in connection with the movement which gives a tariff preference to the products of coun tries within the British empire. Nations which open their coasting trade to British ships are not exclud ed, but all that observe a policy of exclusion are given tit for tat. It is even provided that ships of nations that pursue an exclusive policy may not carry goods between New Zea land and any other part of the Brit ish empire.—Baltimore Sun. Problem For The Corn Belt Meat Men. Those Iowa corn' belt meat pro ducers who went to Chicago to try to patch up tho strike came back disappointed. Instead of catering to Chicago, they might help to build up packing plants in Iowa. There iB no reason under the sun why every farm in tho state of Iowa should feel a dependence upon a few big packing plants in Chicago. Let them declare their independence by helping to build up packing plants in Iowa, and the way to help build up those plants is to patronize tho home plants when the farmers have stock to sell. It often happens that a farmer shipping stock will take his cattle or hogs to Chicago in order to get a pass to and from that city to see the sights. There are plenty of such instances that can be citcd by every stock shipper. The strike in Chicago ought to impress on Iowa stockmen tho wis dom of building up plantR-*?.. their own midst. This exhibit will bo held during the live stock show in the month of September. The cattle will be shown by the department of animal husbandry of the University of Illinois. The ex hibit will comprise forty-eight dif ferent animals and each stall will bear a label showing to what grade the animal belongs and a statement of its market value and the use made of the meat. This exhibit will be of great interest and value to farmers, stock raisers, and students.—Wal lace's Farmer. Advice to Homeseekers. (By S. L. Winter wheat yields more per acre than does spring wheat, and even if a crop out of every four or live should freeze out, the farmer would bo a great deal better off than if he raised spring wheat. Corn, or some other late crop, can always be put in on winter wheat ground should the crop kill out during the winter and thus tho use of the land would not be lost. Alfalfa meal is becoming better known and appreciated by feeders and breeders of live stock. It fur nishes a food high in protein, in a fine mechanical condition easily di gested by animals. In addition, this product is easily handled. The best results are obtained from this meal by feeding it with other feeds. 0 North, South, East and West,x Take which corner you liko best The three great expenses of life are FEED, FUEL, AND CLOTH ING. Where will we have least ex pense in living and where can we make good homes EASIEST CHEAPEST AND QUICKEST? Being free to choose it is important to us that wo choose the road of least resistance. This may sound liko fiction, it may bo romance, it is certainly founded on fact. Allowing that some thing ails every country that almost spoils it, still there is a great differ ence in them and you should ex amine carefully and use your best judgment in settling the matter of location. The measure of a farmer's prosper ity lies in the length of his growing season. Here "seed time and harvest last all the year." The best chanco for a living lies in the diversity of products that can bo grown. Then nearness to best markot and best means of transportation. In all these the coast country leads. The climato being genial and the evenest in tho states with cotton, "Wool," "Ramie" al)d ids, Ottuniwa, Des Moines and Sioux City now have large pork packing plants and they kill a great many cattle incidentally. But nine tenth of all tho hogs raised in Iowa might as well be killed in this state and forwarded to market in tho finished state. That is the way to bring the greatest prosperity to the state. It is worth considering oven on the part of the corn belt meat producers who have been working along a great many lines, but not always along tho right lines. Last winter, for instance, they spent a great deal of time in seeing how they could get Iowa live stock to Chicago to tho greatest advantage. They ought rather to have devoted some time to seeing how not to get Iowa live Btoek to Chicago at all but how to finish the Iowa product of the farms in the Iowa packing houses.—Cedar Rapids Republican, tho cheapest fuel on earth Where ever we go our lot is labor.
