How murh good might be done with
the multiplied million, were thii Taut
sum left at home to build up srhools and
colleges, ftctoriea, where thousands of
looms and buy spinning wheels would
sfllird employment to the starving, yet
industrious thousands of our boys, girls,
and young women f How many hun
dmls of miles of railroad would this
$000,000,000 hava built? To how many
thousand tailoring men would the build
ing of these miles of railroad given em
ployment, had this awful sum of treas
ure been kept at home? The idea is
v-t one. The human mind can hardly
grasp it The building of the great Pa
cific railway oo't much less money, a
railway which haa united, almost, two
Continents. From ocean to ocean, a
line of railway has been erected fur lots
treasure, and yet we know that every
ten years, our wife, daughter, and oth
ers, expend enough money to build such
a great thoroughfare. No wonder that
the Emperor of France has been ena
abled to build magnifrcont Fulace,
around which hundreds of fountains
play, no wonder that Napoleon the 1st
and 2nd, could tax their subjects to the
extent they did. No wonder that Taris
is the finost city iu the world, and thai
France has been able to pay her German
wnr debt, without feeling the heavy
and enormous loud. No other people
have contributed so largely to the liqui
dation of that war debt, a our own
boasted free, progressive America. On
ly the other day we read in a city journal
that Theirs has sent au'llwr forty million
of doltars, as an additional installment
of that debt From whence did those
millions come? t2C,000,000of the f 40,.
OOO.OOO, came hut year from our own
fair land, going into the coffers of French
merchant, to the impoverishment of our
own. When will ouY people learn econ
omy? When will they learn to rely up
on tneir own resources, and to keep these
many millions of dollars within our own
bounds? Will it require another terri
ble war, or shall famine or pestilence,
with their awfully humiliating curse,
become ueccssary to the accomplishment
of thecodsomuchdesired? Oodgrautthat
we may learn the lesson in a fur less seri
ous school, and may we learn that in
economy alone can a nation ever hope to
be prosperous, happy, and free.
Faial Telegraph.
Post-uioster General Creswell has been
for some months engaged in trying to
perfect a scheme by which telegraph lines
can he connected with p ist-ofhccs, and it
is said that he will lay his pet scheme be
fore Congress at its next session, with a
view to have it made a law. We believe
the scheme to be altogether practicable,
and that if it should become a law, the
commercial world will wonder that it did
not occur to them before. In this day of
steam and "Chain-lightning," the steam
is too slow fir the purpose of commercial
communication, and nothing short of the
telegraph, which brings business men face
to' face as it were, although thousands of
miles aiart, will answer the demands of
such men; true they have hud the useof tel
egraph tor years, but at a cost wholly
inconsistent with strict economy, and
besides this, the employes of the tele
graph Companies have not been true to
the important interest of those who used
the wires as a means of communication.
This could and would be remedied by the
post-office authorities, and we very much
hope to see the scheme accomplished.

It is so seldom that we have any good
news from that quarter, that our hearts
lean for joy at the reixirt We said some
weeks ago. that the receut Presidential
contest Mould bring forth good fruits:
thut some political wrongs had been niade
right, and that even in defeat, wo felt
that good would come upon tlie country.
Now then, if Grant has seen the error of
his ways, and will urge universal amnes
ty ; and if Congress should act upon this
recoiuendution favorably; who could say
that the great Liberal and Democratic
parties niifcle a futile struggle? If there
fore, amnesty universal should grow out
of the receut political war; we of the
