We had the pleasure Tuesday evening
of listeaiag to the well known traveler and
lecturer, Col. Sanford. His subject was
"Th* Old and th* New." He wa* intro
duced to the audience In a brief manner
by Mr. C. C. Guilford. The first part of
his lecture was a discriptioa of Old thing*,
commencing with his lint vl*w of the
hou** in which Col. Davenport was mur
dered on Rock Ialand. This house wa*
built in 18M from thi* he went to New
England, and saw house* a hundred or
a hundred and fifty years old, and Col.
Dayenport'* house was comparatively
new. Next he saw Westminster Abbey
which is over eight hundred year* old
from thare he goes to Pompeii sad finds
articiss ef dress, specimen* of architect
ure Ac. almost two centuries old from
there to Rome and sees aquducts, and ru
ins of Temples &c. which were built when
Cassius was a little boy. After seeing all
these he still goes to the Pyramids which
were erected so long ago that for 2000
years their origin has been lost in the
dim mists of the past. He compares these
aged and hoary specimens of man's handi"
work with the present and sees no csuse
for ether than feelings of satisfaction at
the
rue progress made in all tliat will
help men and women live and enjoy life,
eason snd health. His lecture was inter
Icrcsting throughout, and though he is a
very rapid speaker s enunciation is so
c.islinct and perfect that it is a pleasure
to listen to him. Hs closed up with
tribute to America's greatness, and a lit
tle fun at the expense of some ot our na
tional foibles and frailties and as he finish
ed be gvew eloquent in the highest
degree.
We have heard a great many lecturers
but none who could interest and hold the
attention of aa audience belter than Mr.
Sanford. His lecture was interspersed
with a great deal ef wit and the frequent
hearty laughter of hi* audience showed
that it was appreciated. Wednesday
evening he lectured on "Travels in Sun
dry Lands," but as we were absent from
town we were unable to attend.

From our Traer Correspondent.
It is a fixed fact beyond recall that, the
Rnilroad is to be extended to Grundy
Center at once. Traer the past week has
been full of men interested in the work,
engineers, surveyors, contractors and all
that go to make up a Railroad party, and
thirty more arrived today. The agent to
secure the right of way has also been on
the ground, but thus far has made but
few purchases. The survey as it leave*
Traer for a few miles, so crosses land as
to cut it up in bad shape, and the owners
feel agrieved, and their yiewsof the value
looks high to the efflcia's.
Tramp, Tramp, the tramp* go marching
by, and along our streets in great aum
hers having been attracted by the pros
pect* of work be thi R. R. They are not
handsome birds by any means, being
neither "shaven or shorn," but all look
healthy and undoubtedly would make a
full hand at th* table at meals. To fur^
nish some of them lodgings, the jail which
is tenantless bat been opened for them to
spread their blankets.
The Clarendon Comedy Company with
a Miss MeKean as leading character gave
some four or five entertainments last
week. Their abilities are highly spoken
of by those present, but their success pe
cunarilly was a failure, by reason of hard
limes ar want of appreciation in the Dra
ma ea the part of our citizens they were
not wall patronized and left town ia debt
