The K. Co. for some reasons have '-v*'r paid no attention to the right of William Flemming, but entered upon his land and went to work. They attempted the same &i3 thing on llie land of James Flemming, There is nothing w liich adds more to the looks of a town than handsome and tasteful front yards, nicely kept lawns, or nnmental shnibbery and flowers. The fine yards is one of the first things a stranger notices when comin? dto or passing through a place, and ht judges much of the taste and culture of a peo ple by -their surroundings. In order to keep a lawn in good style and give it that beautiful velvety appcarance so common in the larger cities and in Parke, and public grounds it is necessary to have a Lawn Mower. There are a aumber of manufacturers of these articles in the United States, and as in other things, each one claims his own production to be the best. The New Excelsior Lawn Mower, howeycr seems to take the lead. It is used in the Parks of hew York City, Boston, Washington, and* many oilier leading cities cf the Union, and Mr. Jas. The enterprise was & gignntic one, but it frond a ready response from our own cUiseas, and many oatside, to all ap peals for aid. The history of completion of he building, and the first exhibit made, iaatill so fresh in the minds of. all our readers that It is needlesa to go over it now. It will suffice to say that, taking everything into consideration, it being a new thing and everybody, of course, more or less interested in the Centennial Exposition at Philadelphia, it wss a gral. ifying success. Tlie first exhibit closcd in the fall, anp during the w'.nter And spring tlie building has been used for different purposes, giv ing the citizcns a splendid place for en'er taiuir.ents of different feint's, such ns lee. lures, dancing parties, suppers, etc., and by these means it has become a favorite place ef resort. The uhlic generally do not eeom to un derstand the nature of the undertaking, and do not realize to what extent some of our very best business and moneyed men are interested in it. As llicy are now com mencing preparations for the Exhibition this fall, for the purpose tf giving people that confidence in it which they should have, to make It successful, it is not out of place to call attention to some facts re lative to the whole matter and acquaint everybody with the men who are holding up the enterprise and pushing it to sue cess. No one can go through the building or even see it, without realizing that the expense attending the construction must have been very great. Ask yourselves why it is done, and a proper answer to the question will make friends for the undertaking. Many people look upon it as a money-making schemc for the stock holders, and imagine fabulous piles of money roollng into their treasury. Men well acquainted with the facts Know that such is n the case. It is a fact that men who have their money in the institu tion arc carrying something which is a real public benefit and not a paying in vestment. Probably no one wishes other wise than that ultimately it may prove wore profitable to the stockholders, but the way in which that can be done is for the people to patronize it and make it pay. In doiug this, exhibitors will reap the greater benefit. exhibited by such churches in their dealings with other denomications and those outside of any Church. Above a'.l let us have char ity. I". The exhibition this fall wHl open Sep tembcr 30th nnd continue thirty business days, closing Oct. 31st. Business men and manufacturers will be given in this a splendid oportuiity to display their goods ef every description, and we are confi dent it will be to their advantage. Des Moines especially ought by no means to allow the interest to flag in the least Thousands of people can be attracted to the city by the Exposition if we here at home do what we ought to do for it. It *s but. justice to the gentlemen who have given the city such an opportunity, for every person to aid in any way they can the commendable enterprise.—State of Rachel Carcw.
