Granger, of Monticello, is now get ting material for erecting a Cheese facto ry on his farm this fall, to be ready to •commence business next spring. Some of the farmers near Traer think their wheat crop one of the best they have raised for the last ten years, and will yield in some places thirty bushels per acre. The M. E. Sociable will be held at the residence of Mr. X. C. Wieting on Thurs day evening of this week. Refreshments will be served, and a general good time is expected. An exchange says "when a man dis covers that liis boy has been using his razor to sharpen a slate pencil with, hi? faith that he is to be the father of a Pres ident is temporarily eclipsed by his anx iety to find the boy and apiece of lath." Tjfust Friday evening, about 6 o'clock •while the proprietors were at supper and the clerk was outside showing some goods to a customer, Jimnile Moorcroft "went through" the money drawer of Messrs. J. M. Camery & Son, securing some seven or eight dollars. The theft was soon discovered and the money was recovered after some little talking. Mr. Jolra Wilson, of Traer, received a telegraph dispatch on last Wednesday, from Fall River, Mass., that his daughter Mrs. Majrgie Turnbull was lying at the point of death. Some of her relatives started immediately to see her, and soon after they had left a second dispatch was received announcing her death. Her re mains will be brought to Traer for inter ment. The Chicago and Northwestern Rail way Company, with nearly 2,000 miles of road stretching northward, westward, and northwestward from this city, is one of the greatest and best managed corpor ations in this country. Its annual report for the year ending May 31st, has just been issued. Gross earnings for the year $13,033,101: net earnings, $1,179,718—de crease, as compared with the earnings of the previous year, $101,490. The North western pays its employes reasonable wa ges, treats them fairly, and none of them are complaining. .During the recent strikes its train men, shop-men, and all others in its employ were loyal to the company, none of them having sympathy with the strikers. There is no commer cial or other business interest in the whole country that is managed with greater good sense and success than the North western. Albeit Keep, its President Marvin Hughitt, its General Superinten dent, and Dr. W. H. Editor Chronicle. Fall River, Mass., August 16th, 1877,Margaret Wilson, wife of llev. Mr. Turubull. Mrs. Turnbull was a daughter of John Wilson, Esq., of this place. A she went out from her fathers house in the strength of youth, a happy bride to that eastern city on Nara ganset Bay to assume the 'aburs of a pas tors wife. Those labors were short. God called her home. Her family and num erous friends can scarcely realize that she has passed away. The sympathies of the community go out to Mr. Turubull and relatives. She leaves twin children a few weeks old. Her body will arrive here on Wednesday noon. Harvest being over the threshing ma chines have been humming quite lively for the past few days. A somewhat stormy time was had over the delegation from Tama City. He has made statements before about Buckingham that were not true, bui being of little importance, I did not correct them. We only ask for the truth. For Supervisor another Democrat, Rob't. Erwin, of Richland was taken. The offices of Surveyor and Corondr were left vacant, probably because the convention didn't know who their mas ters the Democrats wanted named. Bismarck. Just as we Supposed! A resolution was passed authorizing the County Central Committee to fill those vacancies on the ticket, which, we suppose they will be able to do after the meeting of the Democratic Convention, A resolution was also passed endorsing and recommending Hon. W. G. Malin for the position of State Senator. Speeches were then called for from Mr. Malin and Mr. Mann. Mr. Malin was not prepared, was called for so unex pectedly that he hadn't time to "tune up," and so he simply thanked them for the honor conferred upon liim. Mr. Mann, upon being called for made a short speech, composed principally of clap-trap andjnonsense, re iterating the demagogue's cry that the poor laborer has to pay all the taxes and go through all the toil and privation for the benefit of the wealthy or rich. He may bo sound in his ideas advanced, but it is our hum ble opinion that such men as Carmichacl and Hall, of Tama, Johnston, Clark, Nel son and others of Toledo, and many more whom we might mention pay just as many mills on the dollar in taxes as the poor laboring man. It is all right to sym pathize with poverty and haye compas sion on the poor, but we say be honest about it, and don't shed so many cocodile tears. Mr. Mann, we presume, is one of the wealthiest farmers in Central Iowa, and for all we know has got his wealth honestly, but we dont think he is any the worse for it, on the other hand he is placed in position to do more good, if so inclined, than if his means were limited.
