The new board have had thrco meeting", on the 8th, 15th, and 22d inst., at the first two only of which, however, a quorum was pre aent The first meeting was principally taken up in examining the returns of the election, and administering the oath cf ollice to the new board. Tho second meeting was mainly occupied in the election of officers for the coining year. Tho following oflicers were elected : City Clerk T. R. Courtney, re-elected. Treasurer II. V. "A number of claims were presented and referred to appropriate committees, among which was one from Dr. Hard for injury to his horse and buggy by reason of the bad state of a sewer on La Salle st. The board stands adjourned to next Tues day evening. New School Iloasc. At length Ottawa is about to wipe away her chiefest reproach, and commence tho ' erection of school houses. Our peopto will bo gratified to And in to-day's paper an ad vertisement for sealud proposals for the erec tion of two large and commodious buildings of brick, 38 by 70 feet, two stories high, with basement. Iioth buildings, when com pleted will accommodate three or four hun dred scholars each. By tho school law for our city, passed at tho lata session of the legislature, the city is divided into five dis tricts, of which the one west of the side-cut, and that cast of tho side-rut and between the canal and rivers, arc much the most pop ulous. The school houses now proposed to bo erected are intended for the accommoda tion of these two larger district1!, although it is intended ultimately to havo a good build ing in every district, besides a large Central building for a high school for all. Rut this is looking some way ahead. For the present, buildings aro to bo erected only in tho two districts Uiuicd, and in the balance accom modations will bo provided by renting. Tho whole city, we are happy to be able to an nounce, will bo provided with yood free trhooli, so that all the children of tlio city whether high or low, rich or poor, will en joy the same facilities for acquiring a good, practical, common school education. Ami'SKments. Our town has been alive the last week with circuses, negro melodists, organ grinders, mountebanks, and all that beggarly train of genteel vagabonds anil loafers-who find infinite brass and shame, less buffoonery an easier means of making a living than honest toil. ''Uncle Tom" was murdered in more senses than one, and the respectability of the negro cltaracter very greatly defamed by shocking imitations, sunk far below the grado of bad caricatures. It is hoped, for thp honor of Africa, which bad once a fair reputation for musical talept, that these strolling bawlers, may be in duced to wash tkeir races, ana appear in their true color, which we should judge to be of tlio African hue only about the extrem ities. Ehscoi-al Visitation. IUv. Ilr.xuv J. VrniTFirovEK, D.O., Hishop of Illinois, will, as we aro informed, make his annual visitation to this parish on Friday next, and will offici ate in Christ Church on the evening of thai day. Several persons aro to bo confirmed, ami many of our readers will doubtless be pleased to be present on that interesting oc casion. Rbeak in the Canal. A slight break oc curred in the canal a week ago at lock 12, below town, which was no sooner rqiaired than another more serious break occurred in tho Fox River feeder on Saturday night, at tho bend near Lyman's mound, two miles above '(own. We understand somo 00 feet of the bank were washed away, at a point unusually difficult to repair. Mr. Ford was promptly on the spot with his posse of bands, and by working day and night, the bank ,was reconstructed by Thursday, so that navigation, which was obstructed be tween Marseilles and Peru by the occurrence, is once more restored. Rlacksmitiis Ratks Inciieased. It will be soen by tho following that tho Mack smiths of Ottawa, in view of tho great ad vance in the cost of living, havo somewhat raised their prices, and adopted uniform rates of charge : At a meeting of the Master Rlacksmitiis of Ottawa, on Monday, tho 21st instant, Mr. Joseph Hall in tho chair, tho following Pri ces were unanimously adopted, viz: For new shoes, U cents each. " betting old shoes, 18 pence each. " -" and toeing do., 25 cents each. " "4 Wagon tire, $2,50. " " Ono horso wagon or buggy tire $2,00 J " Pointing 3-4 inch harrow teeth, 4 cts. " " 1 " " " 6 cts. Clakk's CnrNTi:ni'i:iT Director. There aro many counterfeit detectors published in the country, under every name and guise J but they are so frequently got up by wild cat brokers and bankers to manufacture an undeserved credit for themselves, that a ne cessity has almost arisen for a detoctorof the Detectors. There are a few, however, that havo gained a deserved reputation for relia bility and accuracy in their reports iu refer ence to the gcnuinenesH and value of tho pa per of tho ten thousand banks scattered al over our country, nnd prominent among them is Clark's Detector, published at St. Lonis. It is to tlio west what Ilecknell't Reporter onco was and Thompson's now is to tho East. It should be in every country house. CHICAGO MARKET. Ciiicaoo, May 24.
