The general pol icy in the nianigcment of a young tree is to throw its whole ital, wood-mking power into those branches, and those alone, which are necJtd and are to be preserved ; that is, so to manage tha tree that half its jrrowth, every t 0 or three years, shall not be thrown away in pruning. Examine the branches. See first what are necessary to mnke the tree symmetrical. Then pinch off every other sprout. If one starts from the bot tom pinch it off at encc. Dairymen state that on an average, and the season through, the cream from fourteen quarts of nii'k is re quired to make a pound and a half of butter. One who feeds pumpkins to his dairy cows claims that with thi3 food, nine quarts of jiii'.k yield a pound of butter, t anners and dairymen who have tried pumpkin feed, state that there is invariably a larjre increase in butter and cheese. Aa pumpkins can be raised at small expense, there is no reason why they should not bt come a profitable ar ticle of feed for cows. Taa Uaitnted Chamber. A room in the principal inn of a country town had the re pAation of being haunte I. Nobody would tleep in it, and it was therefore shut up ; but it so happened that at an election the inn was chock full, and there was only the haunted room unoccupied. A gentleman's gamekeeper came to the inn, exceedingly fatigued by a long journey, and wanted a bed. He was informed that unless he chose to occupy the haunted room he must seek a bed elsesi here. "Haunted!" exclaimed he; "stuff and nonsense ! I'll 6kep in it ! Ghost or de mon, I'll take a look at what haunts it." Accordingly after fortifying himself with a pipe and tankard, he took up his quarters in the haunted chamber and retired to rest. He had not lain down many minutes when the bed shook under him most fearfully. He sprang out of bed, struck a light (for Le had taken the precaution to place a box of lucifer matches by his bedside,) and made a careful examination of the room, but could discover nothing. Tfce courageous fellow would not return to bed : but remained watching for some time. Presently he saw the bed shake violently : the floor was Grm : nothing moved but the bed. Determined, if possible, to find out the cause of the bed quake, he looked in the bed, u der the bed, and near the bed, and not seeing anything to account for the shaking, which every now and ibsn seemed to seize on the bed, he at last pulled it from t'ne.waiL Then the "mur derer came out." The sign-board of the inn was fastened to the outer wall bv a nut and screw, which came through to the back of the bed, and when the wind swung the sign board to and fro the movement was com municated to the bed, causing it to shake in the most violent manner. The gamekeeper, delighted at having hunted up the ghost, in formed the landlord the next morning of the real nature of his unearthly visitor, and lie was handsomely rewarded for rendering a room, hitherto useless, now q'tite servicea ble. AH the ghost stories on record might no doubt have been traced to similar sources, if those to whom the "ghosts" appeared had been as " plucky" as our gamekeeper. Vcvan am MAr.ii! i;n. I have speculated a great deal upon matrimony. I have seen a young and beautiful woman, pride of gay circles, married as the world says, well, r-ome have moved into cost'y housis, and their friends have all come and looked at their furniture and their splendid arrange ments for happiness, and they have gone away and committed them to their sunny hopes cheerfully and without fear. It is natural to be sanguine for them ; a the young arc carried away sometimes by simi lar fellings. I love to gi t, unobserved, into a cornc-, and watch the bride in her white attire, and with her stuiTin face her soft ey?s meeting me in their pride of life, weave a dream of tuture happiness, and persuade myself it will be true. I think I.ow they will sit upon the luxurious sof:i as the twi light falU and build gay hopes, and murmur in low tones the now not forbidden tender ness; and how thrilling! the hallowed kiss and beautiful endearments wedded life will make even their parting joyous, and how gladly come back from the crowded and empty mirth cf tLe gay to each other's quiet company. I picture to myself that young creature who b7ush.es even now in this hesi tating course listing eagerly for his footsteps as the night steals on, and wishing that he would come, and when he enters at last, and with an affection, as undying as his pulse, folds her to his bosom. I can feel the tido that gcs (lowing through the heart, anil gaze with him on the graceful form as she moves about for the kind otlices of affection, soothing all his unquiet earcs and making him forget even himself in her young and anehaded beauty. Some of mem bers of the council, however, exposed doubts whether he was entitled to the high distinction of being called New Nork's bra Test son ; and the ccmittee decided to ad journ to the 15th, (Wednesday) to receive testimony on the subject from all parties interested. The box L not a EnufTbo.v, as is genera ly supposed. It is made of pure golc, is about five inches square, end the mcterial cost $1000, exclusive- of the workmanship. It was presented to Gen. Jackson by the city of New York, and was bequeathed by him to New York's bravest son" in the next war in which the Untiled States mijht be engaged. It is now in the possession of Andrew Jackson, jr., to whose care it was consigned until disposed or ia accordance with the general's wishes. The whiskey is thus deprived of that peculiar irritating and burning taste, and becomes a neutral spirit ; the second property consists in an oily mucillaginous taste imparted to the liquor, which renders it mellow, and imparts an appearance of great age ; the third property is exhibited in the rich, viuous nutty odor that is imparted to the liquor, which renders distinction from the genuine brands imiwssible.
