LOCAL MATTERS I I A - Hisa '.swnssassaBVaWWMssssssJsBsasjsHssBSK Tee National Fast. It must be said, to thecrodit of our citizens, that the Na. tional Fast appointed for Thursday by the rrc-siaVnt, received at least outwardly, a better observance in Ottawa than any of the previous presidential appointments of that sort All the prominent stores and business places were closed, and the city wore a really Sunday aspect. There was service in three churches, we believe, and the congregations Were quite fair. ' From what we bear of one of the churches, however, notably lire Baptist we fear the other suggestion of the Presi dent, that we should pray "for the restora tion of our divided and suffering country to its ferttier cundition of unity and peace, ' was not so well observed. We take it from this, that Mr. Lincoln is in favor of the Union as it was, and is therefore of the class which, in the choice vocabulary of the Radicals, is denominated "copper heads," yet we are told, in the church al luded to, the "copperhead Democrats" were made the subject of special petitory objurgation. It is true, that sort of thing was not indulged in by all the participants in the exercises, but were really deprecat ed by one or two ; but the example was at least, not promotive of peace and love. It is painful to speak of such things m this place; but the malignant, unreason ing fury which a certain class of radicals have conceived against the body of tbe democracy, who are really more loyal aud djvoted to our government than them selves, has begun to manifest itself in ways so mal aprojos and disgusting, that decent people ought to unite to frown it down.- " v ; " ' r '. The Scpreme Court has been in session at Ottawa for the last two weeks; and have progressed so rapidly that the first cull of the docket will probably be ac complished to-da. Eut few cases have been orally argued before the court. The system of submitting cases on printed arguments has obtained general favor of late arid tends greatly to expedite busi ness. Thus far, we understand, no impor tant decisions have been announced. We observe Jlr. E. Peck, recently ap pointed one of the judges of the V. S. j Court of Claim?, is still officiating as lie I porter, the court having as yet made no ! !iTiiiinlmpnt in V.7 r.l " L - Cof. T. L. Dickey, of the 4th III. Cavalry, and for the fnst year Chiaf ol Cavalry in fien. Grant's de pt., has resigned, left the service, ami is at home. His resignation was tendprd in Jan'y. last but he was not relieved until two or three weeks ago. During the year and a half Col. D. was in the service, his regiment did probably more traveling and more hard service lliati 'any other body of cavalry Th tbe anny. They were with Cen. Grant Jn the land movement ag;unst Columbus, a year ago Ust wint. r; they were at the taking Donelsoii, the battle of Shiloh, and during the severe n-connoitrin" r.nu ssoutinn ser vice attending these heavy operations, bore 1 a leading and most laborious part. For the last yeur they have "operated" in western Tennessee, Northern Mississippi and Alabama, run if oue could give a cor ruct history of all the little fights, skir mishes, reconnoisances, fcc, this regiment have been engaged in, it would form not only a large but very curious anj interest ing volume. The regiment, which was originally l'JGO strong, is retluced to l;ss than TOl) men, but this iemti.-Mit, we ven ture the assertion, is equal, for eil'ective, good, hard fighting, to any two ordinary fall regiments of new cavalry. They have a'so a reputation, which perhaps tone other in their circumstances can boast, that they do not jfertf". This plundering systc-m of ' foraging on the enemy" as it is called that is, soldiers helping themselves was sternly discountenanced by Col. D. from tho start, and has ever been held reIigiouIy in abhorence by his " boys." Col. D. during the year aud a half he was in the service, was constantly on hard duty, with bnt tivo or three brief inter ruptions. He is a man somewhat advanc ed in life, it began to wear heavily on his constitution, and his health was not robust. Wo are not advised of his reasons for resigning, Lut considerations like these readily suggest them." That he has proved a most el'icient, prudent, and careful offi cer, the whole history of his service attests. It is notable, that neither his own regi ment, nor any portion of the TOuO to 0000 equently under his command, was ever caught in one of those thousaud rebel traps by which so large a portion of tho federal army iu the west, during the last year, has been frittered away by in competent commanders; although, from the nature of the service, the cavalry were peculiarly liable to such "accidents." Deth of Lt. Jas. C. Camebox. It is stated, from what are believed to be en tire 'ty reliable accounts, that Lt Jas. C. CjimMfcn!, of Co. A, Yates Sharpshoot ers, (MorriiV" company) was killed in the recr&tg.gemnVf Ga- Vod with the rebels South of' Corinth. Editor of Ft ee Irader For the nast two Sundays the Post Office in this place has . . ... oeen ciosea to tbe public during the en tiro day. . Why is it, that the long estab lished custom -of keeping the office open on Sundays from 1 to 2, P. M., has been discontinued? . V "; For tht past 30 years, all the former in cumbrenta of the office hare granted this small boon of accommodation to the public. . . . . A brief number of our fellow citizens, living in the country who use this office tor receipt of their letters and papers suffier great inconvenience from tbe " new order of things," vfc, keeping the office closed all day oh Sunday. The persons to whom I refer, are .those good christians whose visits to town on Sunday are made for a doublepurpose, viz , " attending Church" and getting their mails, thereby saving by the old arrang ment to them at least, an extra journey to town and much loss of time and labor in consequence. To the citizens of the town, tbe closing of the office on Sundays Is no deprivation ; "out to numbers of our country friends, it is a great one. H. Donations Received by tbe Soldiers Aid Society. Having seen no account as yet, in your paper, of the Exhibition lately performed in district No. one, town ot Utiea. "I deemed it no more than justice to the performers and audience to inform the public of the untiring efforts of the la dies to promote the comfort of the absent soldiers. The treasury of the "Soldiers Union Aid Society" in the town of Wal than, Utiea, and Dayton had been tor some time previous out of funds and the ladies decided fn having an Exhibition in order to replenish it. The entertainment took place on the evening of the fourth of April; and did great credit to the per formers, all of whom were young ladies. The room was decorated in the most taste ful manner, with wreaths of evergreens, interspersed with flowers, and also rare paintings. The performance consisted of dialogue-, essays, tableaux, declamations aim munic, Loth vocal aud instrumental. The applause of the audience was un bounded; the house, which was crowded, fairly shook with their repeated cheers. The amount received, was considered an ample compensation for their elljru. The brave defenders of our country can but feel cheered by this new manifesta tion of the interest, the friend, at home feel for the roldiers. Surely they can do battle with our enemies, with braver hearts, more undtunted coiiiage, when they know woman's heart in eulited in their behalf, and woman s hand w ever leady to contribute its mite to assist and encourage these heroic defenders of our country. l honor to the ladies of Waltham, Utiea and Dayton, for their noble example.
