I TREiSUaY DEAPARTMKNT, 1 Ouce o. lTi!it!l Rnnn, V , Washington, July IS, I'M. ) Sir:lhe letter of J, W. lirowne, Eq., of Earlville, Ills., dattj July 12, 18GS,ia relation to the Hpecul tax of hotel and l-.very stablo keepers, with your endowment therein requesting that an answer bo sent to you, has been received. 1 reply that hotel keepers incur no additional lia bility to special tax as livery stable keepers with respect to the boarding or keeping of horses, or other animals belonging to tlio guests of the house ; but all receipts from such stable should be included in estimating their liability to tax as hotel keepers. But all persons, whether hotel keepers or otherwise, who keep hordes for hire, or to let, or who keep, feed, or board horses for others, (except guests of the hotel,) are liable to tax as livery stable keepers, without reference' to the amount of their gross receipts. In compliance withyourrcque.it the letter oflfr. Drowne is herewith returned. Very respectfully, E. A. Rollins, Commissioner. Ho. B. C. COOK, Home ofRep'tvcs, Washington, V. C. BL'DDKN DKATFI. Michael Kevins, of this place, some few days prior to his death, stepped on and run into his foot an old rusty nail. lie probably took cold in his foot, and after one day of great suffering he died, on the Cd inst., of tetanus or lockjaw He leaves a wife and quite a numerous family of children to mourn his sudden death. Drr. Vos burgh, "Wiley, Kinsleo and Ilmkley were in at tendance, but their combined skill was unavail ing, he has passed death's dark flowing river, and this world has shut to after him. He was a quiet, industrious citizen, and is really a loss to the community. (SCHOOL DIUKCTOKS. A spirited election came off in this district No. 4, Aug. 8, for a director to succeed "W. R. Haight, Esq., whose term had expired. Henry Van Riper was elected. By this election it seems to be settled that less salary shall lo paid for teachers. It means retrenchment. It is all well enough i f notcarritJ too far, but let me warn the people against a cheap school. A cheap teacher is worse than the measles in S'.-hool. FROM MENDOTA, The good people of our town were greatly amused on reading the Mendota Bulletin of last week. Our effulgent black republican luminary, published partly here and partly in Aurora, pur ported to give an account of our Democratic ratification meeting taken from the Ottawa llcp"W of last week, printed and published in Ottawa ten hours after the issuing of the Bulletin here. Tho article was the result of the combined efforts of our postmaster, the putative father of the Bulletin, and a certain doctor, who, through the kiudly efforts "of the Washburn family, received the appointment of assistant surgeon in tho army, wherein his patriotism buoyed him up whilst eating Uncle Sam's grub four or six weeks ; when, upon a severe attack of diarrlm-a, he was obliged to abandon his rations and resign his laurels' and commission and return to the secluded shades of Melugin's Grovo fr repairs. Emerging from thence, his aspirations led hiru to this great metropolis, since which his time has been divided between writing for our tuppeny black republican paper and administering bolus and pill to his "pro tege" our postmaster hitherto in vain attempts to relievo Lira of his very painful flatulency. This very luminous conjunction of master spir its was incompetent to complete the article, and called to their aid the assistance of a young attorney, whose only occupation as far as heard from hns been the tooting of his republican basso, and ogling young ladies from his office window. The result of this mountain of labor was the very foolish article before alluded to. The occult labors of these giant intellects are enormous, and will undoubtedly be appreciated by their republican friends. Further than the above article, not a ripple has broken the dead silence of the republicans of our city. With the Democracy the New York nominations are highly satisfactory, nnd confidence in the result of the campaign is increasing. AS ACCIDKNT Occurred to a young man named James Aikens whilst out hunting on Monday last. On taking his gun from under tho seat of the buggy it was accidentally discharged, the muzzle being at the time against his arm above the elbow. The in jury was found so serious that Drs. Corbus and Cook found it necessary to amputate above tho elbow. Ho is doing well. KUAL'DULEST INCOMK llKTl IlXS. To-day the IT. S. Marshal hns been here and taken two of our leading merchants, Messrs. Marks aud Cooper, to Chicago, on charge of hav ing made fraudulent ineoino returns. These republican detectives are getting exceedingly sharp, and it matters not whether the accused is republican or democrat all is fish that comes to their nets. Indeed wo are very, much in the condition of tho frogs in tho fable, who prayed Jupiter for a king. He first sent them n log, but tlmt would not satisfy they must have a livo king. So Jupiter sent them a stork, who immediately fell to eating frogs, until their songs were heard no longer in tho fen. Go on, King Stork; this is a glorious government, a goodly government, a republican government. FROM SENECA. My first letter caused such a commotion among tho rails up here, that I am encouraged to try again. On Monday evening tho Grant Club had an other meeting, and was addressed by two indi viduals, tho first surveyor and, I understand, largo stockholder in the Chicago, Tlainfield & Miss. R. II. Ho got through just as I arrived, but I was told las speech was that same old song, "copperhead," "copperhead," "copperhead." Tho other speaker was the man of vulgar stories. "You would havo died" to see him spread him self. In his former effort he acknowledged his inability to make a political speech. He proved it fully now. Ho had entirely to rauoh steam on. Ho wound up by challenging any democrat in tho ceunty to meet him on tho stump. Then our postmaster took a hand in, which was entire ly proper, for such a team ought not to be divi ded. Tho burden of his ipeech was your humble correspondent. OTTAWA FREE TRADER : , SA1 URD A Y, On Tuesday evening P. A. Armstrong, Faq. of Morris, addressed the democratic club, and he kept his audience spell bound for over two hours. He gave us a good, sound, common sense argu ment, that toUL The Marseilles democratic club was represented, and had their band with them, which enlivened the proceedings wonderfully. Grant stock is declining here. , .: Our grain and lumber trade ia now active. To-day (5th) they are paying 92o for corn ana 41c for new oats. -J FROM 80MOIT AUK. " This writing comes from a place not often represented by correspondents through your paper. Situated partly in DeEalb and partly in La Salle counties, it receives the people of the two placet, from whom your present scribbler gathers a few items. . roLrncs. . i Politics in this place is good democracy ad vancedabove par. The democrats had a rally last Saturday evening, and organized a club of about fifty members, elected a set of officers, and had 'a good time generally. Mr. ITess, chairman, and Win. Henn, Secretary. The club is com posed of members living in both eounties, in the towns of Somonauk and Northville, and is a union of the two into one. The meeting was addressed by J. I. Montgomery, from Leland, and a more interesting and enthusiastic one could not be had. They meet monthly, on the first Saturday evening in each month. Grand rally and geod speaking at their next Somonauk is a pretty place and has two splendid brick blocks of stores and more building. Business is brisk here and trade of all kinds flourishing, I will give an account of the tradesmen, Arc, engaged in business in my next Till then anon. T the Editor of the Free Irader : "Skyler" Colfax is cunning. Everybody knews that "Skilfr" Colfax and Deacon Brossare about making a trip to the Rocky Mountains. Now comes in the cunning of "Skiler." Having wit nessed the utter failure of the . black and tan, araalgamation.miscegenation radical black repub lican party to get up any thing like a respectable enthusiasm over the "Mcm" and Colfax ticket, and judgiag from this that it would be useless to attempt to call out a demonstration, "Skiler"' positively declines in advance any and all such demonstrations. "Skiler" ia cunning. ' Peru, Aug. 4. - G. Hri.ETT. Gold Watches are generally put down among articles of luxury, yet there is no piece of furniture about the house moro strictly an article of necessity than a good time piece, and the best watches are always put in gold cases, so that, in the long run, a good gold watch is cheap er than a silver one or even a brass or wooden clock. The reader will find this especially true on giving a fair trial to the splendid gold watches at the jewelry store of Mr. Jesse Dickey. He has them at prices varying frem 40 to 1 175 of American and foreign manufacture. ' In jewelry of all kinds, and pure silver or gold and silver plated ware, Mr. Dickey's stok has been very much enlarged of late and is really splendid. )rom th Elgin, Illinois, Gazette, Nov.
