OTTAFA FREE TRADER: 8 AlUKDY, AUGUST 21, 1869. jf arm 2artnt--$ouseijonK, Heal Cstatt. Rammer Prussia; ' Oar horticultural reader need soaroely ba re minded that at this time year rammer torn ing demand! the closest attention. Erery trait grower admits the inrJrtance of thii operation, yet Tery few practi it carefully and perserer- ingiy. a ne oia auyo x rerention is oerxer man cure" applies to t' work, for it it certainly bet ter to prevent tM growing of a branch in a plaoa where it will h injurious to the tree, than to al low it to groT for a year, or perhaps more, and then endeay r to to euro the defect by amputa ting it T'e cutting oif ot large limbs or bran ches is a pvere check to a vigorous tree, bat tht rabbinr-rfC of a email shoot has no noticeable ef fect J summer pruning we not only prevent the gywth of superfluous wood, but we increase the rigor of those branches which are retained, aid make them more productive. By attention to summer-pruning, the head of a fruit tree may be brought into and kept in proper shape, the inclination to push oat too much to one side being prevented by nibbing off or shortening in the refractory shoots. A pyra midal shape is the most desirable for a dwarf pear, or even for a standard pear, or any other fruit tree, because the branches will have the full benefit of the sun without crowding each other, but trees will not assume a regular pyramidal form unless they are compelled to do so by time ly and judicious pruning. Sometimes the side shoots grow more rapidly than the central, shot ting oat the sun from the latter and causing the center of the head to be a dense mass of foliage ' without any fruit This evil may be prevented tyj pruning. t Ornamental trees and ehrabs require to be pruned as well as shade trees. When neglected, they sometimes become unsightly instead of or namental. Sometimes they grow straggling and out of proportion, and sometimes the branches do considerable damage by overshadowing choice flowers or flowering-plants. Timely and care ful pruning will prevent these evils. Summer pruning need not be confined to the rubbing off or shortening in shoots of the growth of the oar rent year, as branches large or small may be re moved iu summer as well as at any other time, as the wounds made at that season heal rapidly and the trees lose very little of the essential jucies by bleedinir, even when large limbs have to be removed. Summer is a more suitable sea son for operating than winter or spring, bat the timely removal of a shoot will prevent the ne cessity for cutting off large limbs or branches. Grape vines are making very rampant growth this year ; they require pruning in summer even more than fruit trees. All useless bads should be removed, and the fruiting-shoota stopped or shortened within three or four leaves of the last bunch of fruit Byjthe timely use of the finger and thumb, the knife may in a great measure be dispensed with, and the tendency to mildew prevented, as rampant foliage prevents ventila tion and induces this destructive disease. Wett em Rural. Hot Pudding. The students In one of our colleges being fre quently annoyed by the nocturnal and inquisi torial visits of a Professor, who suspected them of playing cards, one evening prepared a kettle of mush, otherwise called hasty pudding, and by the time it had boiled had seated themselves around the table in the attitude of card-playing, waiting patiently for the well known step of the Professor. It wae no sooner heard than a large outside pocket of one of them was forthwith fill ed with hot hasty pudding, and all were seated as before, A3 soon at the Professor had opened the door, the student who was loaded with the muh made a sadden sweep over the table with his hand, as if to gather up the cards, and with another motion apparently put them into the rocket containing the mush. Theae movements could not help being noticed, as they were in tended to be, by the Professor, who, considering them as a pretty strong evidence of guilt, broke out with the following : "Well, young gentlemen. Fve caught yoa at last, have It "Why, yes sir, we are all here." "So I see you are, and you have been playing cards, too .' "No, sir, it is not so." "It inn t, bar hat nave yoa got in yoar pocket, young man "Hot hasty pudding, sir." "Hot hasty pudding, ha ! hasty pudding have you ? Ill hasty pudding yoa," said the Profess or, at the same time thrusting his hand half way to the elbow in not hasty pudding. The dolorous looks, the shaking of fingers, the groaning and capers of the Professor are better imagined than described. To Pare Peaches. In all the peach growing regions tbere will be an abundance of this ex cellont fruit this year. We will give a method of paring them which is not generally known, but which is much superior to the knife. Have ready some weak lye, boiling hot, drop the peach' es into it, let them remain a few seconds, then take them out and drop them into cold water and the skins will readily drop off. An Almont Fatal Case of "Farcy. T. W. Booos, the well known Government Veterinary Surgeon, writes from Washington, D. C, to Dr. S. B.
