Hu seemed kind of re.-itloss, like n cat in a
Ktran?e garret, and hung around the clerk s
desk in n timid manner, waiting for some one
to ask him what ho wanted, but no one asked
him, and lie finally mustered up courago to
inquire of one of the secretaries for the clue!

tnd the hadown of suspense left his anxious
face as he approached the solemn secretary

"I believe you are the clerk ; well, I want
to join tliis convi'inion."
hud looked at him iiiuuinngly and wild:
Want to do what V '
I want to join this convention."
A look of pity and coinmisseration camr
over Dud's thoughtful face, as doubts of the
fellow's sauity began to dawn up:m him, and
he said :
Why, my dear sir, I don't understand
you."
"Why, I am from Indianapolis and ho

A shoit-horned cattle convention met at
Mozart Hall the flame day, and the delegate
from Indianapolis had got things mixed.
A fnnnv suit atruinst an editor has
been
decided in the circuit court at Waukesha, Y is.
The Fays, proprietors of the La Hello house
at Oconomowoc, brought an action betore a
justice to recover $97.94 for meals and cigars
'furnished Ashley I). I larger, editor ot the
Oconomowoc Time. Harger sot up a counter
claim of $100 for "pulling" the La Helle
house. Judgment was rendered for the plaiu
tiff, and Mr. Hargar appealed to a jury. The
case excited much interest. Harger being
well liked, and having a solemn, earnest
manner of making very witty remarks, he
testified that Kay would say to him ; "Harger,
I've got a nice dinner to-day come in." "No,
I thank you, I'm going home." Fay would
prevail on him to stay, and after dinner the
following colloquy: "Everything in there
all righl, Hargar V "Everything excellent."
'Dessert all right?" "Excellent." "Ice cream
all nsjhtr" "Delicious, Mr. Fay." "Very
well, remember this in your paper next week."
In return for dinners and cigars, Harger says
:U.at he told a great many lies editorially
worth more than a thousand dollar. lie
would never have presented a bill for lies had
not Fay fallen out with him and Minted pay
for the dinners. Harger pleaded his own
case and t!ie jury found a verdict for him,
which threw the costs upon the hotel keeper.
He was an Irishman, and w hen first seen he
was coining down Montague street, Brooklyn,
on his wav to the Wall street ferry. Over his
port shoulder hung a bag containing about
a bushel of potatoes, and in hU starboard
hand he carried a stout stick, lieing under
full sail the momentum acquired in coming
down tho stoop grade carried him nearly
through the gateway, when, seeing a boat
about ten feet from the dock, he shook out
another reef, made an astonishing burst of
poed. and jumped. Justus he reached the
deck the potato hag shifted heavily to port
und laid out a Broad street clerk who was
smokinga Henry Clay through a meerschaum
holder, while tile stick hit x round South
street merchant in the waistband, shutting
him up like a jack-knife, and Pat himself
assumed an involuntary devotional attitude.
He was the first to recover his perpendicular -
ity, and as he replaceil the bag in its normal
positiou, lie complacen.ly remarked: "be my
owl, but I got the boat anyhow." "Hot the
boat?" screamed he of Broad strett, spitting
the pieces of amber out of his mouth. "Why,
you double blank idiot, this boat is coming)
in!'' and so she was.
Mark Twain, at a public, dinner in London
recently, responded to the toast "The Laities,"
aritl in the course of his remarks said: "Ah,
you remember, you remember well, what
throb of pain, what a great tidal wave of grief
swept over us all when Joan of Arc fell at
Waterloo. (Laughter.! Who does not sorrow
for the loss of Sannho, the sweet singer of
Israel? I Laughter. Who, among us does
not miss the gentle ministrations, the soften
ing influences, the humble piety of Lucrezia
Borgia? Laughter. Who can join in the
heartless libel that woman is extravagant in
dress when wo can look back itnd call to
mind our simple and lowly Mother Eve,
arrayed in her modification oV the Highland
costume?"
It was about two o'clock Friday morning
that Mrs. Ilenncssy, of Nelson street, thinking
she heard a noise in the kitchen, crept out of
bed and to that room to see if it was not lieu
nessey, who had been expected in for several
hours. On reaching the kitchen she found
her lord and master sitting on the floor, with
his new silk hat in between his knees, and in
the hat several dried herrings anil about two
quarts of water. Mr. Hennessey was eyeing
h mixture with profound gratification.
"Joan Hennessey," screamed the lady, "vyhiit
arc you doing?" "Jc?" inquired Mr. Hen
nessey, with a look of surprise. "Why,
I'm (hie!) starting an (hie !) aquarium for yn;
