OTTAWA FKKE TilAHEK: SATURDAY, A PttIL 25, l74. 8 Ottawa, III., Saltmlay, April SS, 17. VETOED 1 Very much to the surprise of everybody, President Grant ou Wedncsdny sent to con gress his veto of the senate bill for the issue of $44,000,000 mors greenbacks and of $46,000,000 more .national bauk currency. Tire veto message is short, but emphat ically to the point. The President thinks there is room to doubt whether practically the -bill would have the effect of hiUating the currency, but whether it has or not such would bo theoretically its effect and to that extent its purpose demoralizing and vicious. The effect of diluting the prcsert paper issue can only be to drive moro coin out of the country and put off further the day of resumption. There can be no substantial addition to the currency oi ma country uum um vnu imi.. is placed ou a par with gold. "At present," says Mr. Grant, "the duties ou imports being required in coin, creates a limited demand for gold, and about enough to satisfy that de mand remains in the country." The rest Is exported, like any other article of commerce. 'c can never get buck to a sound currency until we again bring our paper to a par with gold and silver, and thus take coin out of the list a9 an article of commerce and make it a part of the ordinary circulation; and until that is done, there can be no real addition to the currency. Nothing can be sounder than these views of the President. They nro Indeed axioms that no intelligent political economist dis putes any more than an uxiom in Euclid. J'nt under the hullabalo that has been raise at Washington for a cheap and doprecfatcd currency, the President deserves all eommen ration for bis manliness in taking a firm stand for honest redemption of the govern merit's solemn promises to pay, in opposition to the robber cry for repudiation. James Shoaff, late editor of the Paris (la lettt; formerly editor of tho Decatur ., und wtll known as one of the oldest an J spi ciest editors in the state, committed .suicii'.e week ago last Monday. Matt Winterscheid, in boring for water 5 miles west of Mendota last week, ut the depth of 70 feet struck a vein of inllamable gas. There seems to be enough of it to supply him with all the light and fuel he w ill vcr need. rr v. .ml !i (,'ip., 111. or. I .it! 'cloth;:. !h.t!t! .!.. That he has no more legal claim to the oflice than Kellogg had to the govern orship of Louisiana is as plain as day. The legislature, in Arkansas as well as in Louisi ana, is the only body that can Iegadycauvass and pass upon the election returns and pro. noiince who is elected Governor, and in both the case of Kdlotrg and Brooks the decision was against them, but both got u corrupt judge to interfere and reverse tho icclsion of the legislature. There was, in the lcgmning, however, this difference: In Louiiana Kcl loeg was the administration candid te, while in Arkansas Brooks was the anti-auiinistra-tion candidate. The case of Brous, there fare, was hopeless, until within thilast few months Gov. Baxter had wcakenedtowards the administration aud Brooks suddnly flop ped around and became its ardent apporter. This he doubtless did designedly,. nd now, having seized the governorship ail ousted Baxter, he finds Grant his friend ju as Kel 'logg found him, and in spite of Baxtes urgent and pathetic appeals to the i'rcsiuet, Grant makes the same plea as inthe case of I.uisiuna that, while he can interfere so lar uo keep the peace that is, prevent Baxter fnu re gaining possession of tho oflice by for-, he cannot intertcre with the decisions r the courts! But Baxter is cunning, lading Grant impracticable on one tack, he tri him on another. He proposes to call toget-r the legislature to decide between him aud Loks, aud asks Grant to keep tho peace unilhen This Grant perforce must consent to, id as the legislature is all for Baxter, he wihave an easy victory in that bod'. But wlllrant let him oust Brooks by force after the tisla ture decides in his (Baxter's) favor Thk Wheat Trade. Tho New fork Shipping Lint, a journal ot conceded thor ity, after remarking at some length i the course of the wheat market in Kngla and on toe continent, concludes as follows A careful hiirvi y of the whole flehbrces the conviction that breadslutl's will beieap luring the remainder of the harvest y, un less, iudeeil, the growing crops slid be overtaken by some serious disaster, e re ceipts from the west are likely to holip a little during the spring seeding, but.-ex-crptionally low rate of rail freights well calculated to keep tho movement up ::om parativelv large proportions through the spriyg. The all rail rato on wheal 1 eas.'o to New York is now down to 2-its u bushel, with a drawback of 2$ pc-ent., which would be considered cheap bjl wa ter. As a consequence, we arc Hving n-iifMit nil mil fi- nn remote Kansans a JSe Jjraska, which is something never km till this season. In conclusion, h woumtih that if the present wheat prospects holMd, .exceptionally cheap prices the worLvcr -will be the rule next season. Thcsquable over the U. S. Senators in 'Masaehusett3 was ended on the 17tl. a compromise on Gov. Win. B. Washburiio was elected by 20 majoiity over all. Tln. derstanding, however, is that he shall y hold the oflice until the 4th or h 1S73, when the term for which Suranog elected expires, and meantime a new le,. ture Is to decide between the adverse cL. of J)awcs, Hoar, Curtis, &c. Dayton. A day or two ui;i we tool; occasion to tint and do up the quiet villutru of Dayton, a town of -oiiit: age uud rvpulutioii loeuted four miles noilii of Ottawa on Fox river. The central llfrtirc- or chief olijcetof attraction is (ircen's Woolen Factor. This U a very extensive ebtuMislitHentund is one of the most complete In the statu. The machinery comprises ull the latest and best improvements. It is now running regularly und employing a re spectable force of hands. The goods niuniifae. tared speak for themselves. Tliey compare cred itably with tho very best tb.it are made. Next In Importance to tins factory is the Fax River Horse Collar Manufactory.of which Messrs. Dunavan and Drunk are the leading managers. This, from a very obscure beginning, has become to be a concern of wide notoriety. They turn out '200 dozen collars per month and orders are pour ing In upon the company so fast that they find, it necessary to drive the establishment to the fullest of its capacity and employ all their re sources in order to eupply the demand. They have found it necessary to increase their capital stock. They would like to change their base of operations to Ottawa In order to avail them selves of the superior shipping advantages afforded here, and would come if our business men and watur powcr company would give thorn a little encouragement. Duyton has twostorcs, une run by Hess A Green, h neat and well-lllled country or general store, .the leading features being a full supply of Uny ton woolen cloths end groceries. The other is owned by Mr. (ieo Makinsou, and is also supplied with a good assortment of groceries, notions, tome dry goods, Hour, salt, syrups, ker osene, medicines, Ac., and all sorts of country produce llnil a ready market In exchange fur goods at cost at either store. The hotel of the nlace Is the Dayton Exchange kept in apple pie or mince pic order by Mr. Jennings. The house makes no very great ex terior pretensions but the interior is neat and scrupulously clean aud the beds and fare are un, exceptionable. Dayton is in one of the prettiest and most pic- ttirusfjue locations in the state. Ou the east come thu broken and irregular line of bluffs of Fox river with many dells, little caves, promi- ncut points unci diversity of scenery abounds everywhere. The dam ubovc the woolen factory across Fox river gives a resting place for fish, and the water not being deep except here anil there the llsh. come here to find refuge, and thu sportsmen pur sue them by day and night with hook and line and tempting bait, and even the merest tyro in the art of angling seldom fails to be well reward" ed for his time and trouble.
