Several weeks ago the "painful intelligence'" Hashed over the wires from Mciidota that one Charles Does had fallen from a river steamer at Keokuk and had been drowned. It afterwards transpired that Doss had committed Beveral for- geries of commercial paper during his stay in Mendota, which accounted for the milk in the eocoanut. The drowning scheme was explained and Mendota oflicers .began bunting up the corpse. It was found in. a lively state of anima tion at Quiuey. . aou ne got back to Mendota he confessed to complicity only in the transac tions, the forger being, m he claims, one Wm, F.ttineer, of Mendota. ITobono I'nblfc ft Co.' The newspapers have lately given the dry good men grand send off (excepting ourselves). They wanted to glv us a blast, but we had to decline the proposed favor. Our natural mod esty would not permit us to excite public turl sltv to the extent that it must be, by a truthful Tepresentation of the magnitude of our store and the rich, rare and beautiful things In it. Emo tional gushes are not our style. If the newspa pers attempted to write us up and be truthful, they would probahly do It In this way: "In Justice to Andrew Lynch wo must admit that we purposely left his store and business to be last noticed, fr the reason that in compari son with the others it is in the nature of delicious dessert served after a meal of common food. The capacity of hts store is immense high ceilings and well lighted. No curtains are used and this single and simple feature makes Mr. Lyoch's store not oo!y healthy for his clerks but for hi customers In more ways thaa oue. In this re gard the store is a crystal palm among the other dry good stores in Ottawa. In its clear, bright light the rick and gorgeous silks, satins, "velvets and nil manner of beautiful dress goods, Impart a feeling that is truly charming; laces and cm broideries ot the best material and rm)6t artistic designs are a decided attraction; Sadies' neck wear is superb; Botne styles of hosiery are mar vels; embroidered muslins for dreesos are not least among the stunning attractions; ladles' uiusKn saques and underwear arettio cap of the climax, sweet, rich and lovely beyond expres sion; the carpet department is in eweeteBt har mony with all the other departments." But the newspaper men would tiot 6top hero. Tiiey would speak in admiration TT shawls, cloaks acid dolmans; of notions, and particularly of cor sets; of table linens, napkins, "towels, doylies; Of sheetings, shirtings, crashes, Ac. And the newspaper men would not slip even here, for they would find In our immense stock a sultieiout number of objects worthy of notice to fill many columns of their papers. From the above re strained reference to our business, although made with characteristic, timorous delicacy, the public will appreciate our reason for not permit ting the newspapers to make us appear ostenta tious. Of late we have not annoyed you with any flowing accounts through the columns of a paper about great rttiuetiotit, great removals, great re- pairmyt, great rebuilding, nor a great "Wilde" ambUr, as we have only been contemplating the above. Our lime has not yet come for any defin ite change. We commenced at the bottom of the ladder the same as the rest of them. And we have not been in the business from fourteen to twenty years ; but could at the end of that time (at our own figures! with our past and present inereuring trade, purchase a whole block and erect a massive building with Jult Verne ru architect. But while we are negotiating for the contract we shall continue to sell from our present tnmple room (opposite ft large building). Our present expense is so small it enables us to give our customers lower figures than any of our competitors, and selling principally lor ca.ni, it makes it interesting for close buyers. We are also pleased to announce that we have our new spring goods, and venture to say that the style and elegance of these goods is not surpassed by any .oime in the county. Among them are many new novelties in combinations of color and weav ing of surfaces upon which the bars, plaids and checks are laid. These goods must be seen to be admired. To minutely describe our lovely gooda would require eoluinn after column, then it would be hard to form an ndequate idea of their superlativeness. It attords us great pleas ure in showing these goods to all the ladies who honor us with a call. A word to the wise is suf ficient. Remember, we are at our same locality. . t Yours truly, Fobbks & Flick. ( To he continued.) .1. P. Flick buys live turkies and chickens. Goods preceded him and will follow him. Looking at the stock now in and contemplating that yet to come, the fact is forced upon us that Mr.Fisfce.whcn he delilieratc ly set out to buy a stock, buys with a liberality that would be downright reckless in any other house. But the fact is Mr. Fiske buys not for Ottawa, only, but with the expectation that every man and boy in La Salle county will want some thing from his stock. There is, then, no such thing as competing with Finke & Beem's. I'.iiying for a patronage unlimited by city or township lines the stocks carrier! are also unlimited in size, variety and quality, Thi spring's Mock of ready made goods, suits, furnishing goods, neckwear, hats and caps, Ae., &c, is one unequalled the Liggett nm lent in this section.
