It is always an important etep -the moving of au old established house from a stand occupied by it for a series of decades. Such a stop bag ruined many a man. Never, however, has such a !-U't been more successful than that of Mr. G11.1.BN, who comes to La Sallo street after many years ou Court street. It goes without argu ment that he can now receive the public in rooms the size of wuich is more in accord with the size and character of the stock he has always carried, for Mr. Gii.i.en has always car. rled a first-class stock though lie was in hardly first class quarters. He never could be releuat ed to a second pluco. His stocks were always at least equal to the best and greatest in the city; aud now, with increased facilities, with new Koods arriving dally and entire stocks put in dur ing the past two weeks he has crowded this building from top to bottom with oods with stock uuexceeded, unexcelled in any particular, if equalled, by anyone in this county. The goods toll their own fctory. There they are. Look at them. Tho-e who were unacquainted with this hous aud may havn thought because the goods were piled away in drawers they were not in the house, have been wonderfully burprlsed aud pleased during the past two weeks with the su. perb stocks opened and now ready for inspec turn. In all departments the stocks aro found full containing all the standard, fashionable and novel dress goods, all lines of notions, great stocks of domestics, and, In fact, all dry goos The new stock of carpets, rugs, curtains, Ac, has jumped into Immediate favor. Probably no carpet stock ever opened here has been so hand somely received by the putlic. The other stecks boots and Bhoes and groceries are also in splendid shape. Taking all things together Mr. Gili.en has the best reason to feel certain the public will be more pleased than ever with the stock of "The Old Reliable;' an with the wonderfully low prices made on all lines, this must be more than ever the most popular house in the city. ' The Churches. Temperan3 . B. Mrs. Gregg, on Wednesday, was informed by Mr. Reddlck that she could remain In his build ing another year. She has been here so long that she knows the ladles of this neighborhood look to her as the leader tn these matters and is therefore extra careful not to disappoint them. She has about her, too, a corps of careful, skill ful and tasty assistants, and superintending all their work iu person secures the best possible finish to goods she sends out. Of course all new spring hats and bonnets must be worn on Easter Sunday, and as that festival is now close at hand ladles should call on her soon. BLACK DIAMONDS The last of the series of Co. Porter, in recent issues, handsome notices of his new inventions in which farmers a re loterst- ed. Mr. Porter was allowed three new patents last winter, all of which these papers speak, of in high terms. His grapple hay-fork, in particular, bids fair to become even more a favorite than his hay carrier, which, as all know, is the king of hay carriers. A case of varioloid made its appearance in Ot tawa this week. The patient Is Mrs. D. Dreifus, who had just reached Ottawa from Bremen. She came in the Herman, lauding at Baltimore on the 12th, arriving here on last Thursday. The galleries are being short ened, at the end nearest the stage, leaving the whole of that end of the hall clear. The pro- centum will be all repainted and remodeled, a new celling will be put on and a new floor laid, besides which the side walls will bo papered. Warren Biale, of Bennett & Riale's, places this office under obligation for several days' smoking for all hands in the shape of '-Meals" and ''Busters,'' made by our old friend Captain L. A. Rising & Southwick, tif Joliel. During the meditations incident to a post-prandial fu migation, the incense of which came from these excellent weeds, we came to the conclusion, and will f-tick to it with all of a smoker' tenacity, that the Captain's hand has not lost its cunning or his good taste its delicacy. The cigars are good. During a playful scaffle between some boys in Albrecht's store on Thursday afternoon, one of the number, a son of Jacob Vtigett, was bitten quite severely in the left thigh by a large New foundland dog belonging to the store. Dr. Weis came in soon after and dressed the wound. No fears of serious results are entertained. Telephonic communication will soon be estab lished bet ween Ottawa and Princeton, the sub scribers paying a small sum for each five min utes' talk. Hearing that Scott Bros. & Co. were to have their millinery opening to day, a reporter for this paper could not restrain bis eagerness to ob serve the new spring styles in ladles' hats in ad vancc, so yesterday he took a stroll around the second floor of this mammoth dry goods house and found all persons busily employed. Miss Pangborn, of Chicago, has charge of the trim ming and Miss Kittle Montgomery, of this city, of the sale department. The former is a com parative stranger to our citizens, but her quali fications and good judgment place her above question. Miss Montgomery is so well known as one of the most pleasant saleswomen In the city that further comment would be superfluous. All ladies should remember the opening to-day and attend. There will be displayed the very lat est styles in hats and all the new shades in trimmings- hats In all grades from $40 and $50 down. In the suit and cloak making departments we found a room filled with expert ladles (ull hand some) engaged in filling orders for the large trade this house has worked up. The truth is the second floor was so filled with the several departments designed for it.that Mr. J E. Scott was forced to admit that if he could have the rebuilding of the store he would be obliged to make it three stories. Speaking in a general way, the success of the firm of Scott Bros. & Co. the present year is won derful, the sales during the last four weeks be ing fully 100 per cent, greater than for tho cor responding time last year. A Harbinger of Spring When you see the ladies filing into Forbes A Lorriaux's, as they are now doing, to select from their large stock of wall paper the new and beau tiful designs with which they intend to adorn their walls, you may be sure that spring Is at hand. But whether spring is upon us or not, Forbes te Lorriaux, at all seasons, rain or shine, are desirous of serving you to the best of their ability, and that they can do so to your entire satisfaction is abundantly proven by their past success. Being so well known as careful and re liable druggists, they do not need any special mention on that score. Their stock of drugs Is not surpassed In the county, and to furnish fresh and pure drugs at a reasonable price Is their aim and their pride. Their trade in wall paper, of which they have an elegant stink, in paints and oils, In mixed paints, varnishes, glass and window shades. Is attaining unlooked for proportions as a result of a careful selection of these goods, and a better place to trade or to get your money's worth is not to he found in this aeck of the woods than at Forbes Lor riaux's. C. M. Shaw sold E. C. Lewis, of Deer Park, 10 bushels Russian white oats. "The roads are awful," but J. E. The town of Farm Ridge, in this county, mourns the loss of one of its oldest and most honored citizens In the death at his home in that town on Sunday last of Mr. John Yoccm He had not been in robust health for several years past, buton Sunday seemed In better health and spirits than usual and ate a hearty dinner, after which he satdown toenjoy his usual smoke He was thus occupied but a few minutes, when he dropped over dead. Ou last evening Janauscbek gave hulij .ltii- bth, to a fine audience. IOMINO EVI.NTS. On Monday night the Boston Comedy Compa ny give Marble's "Furnished Rooms." The play is one of the funniest things on the road; and now for the first time Is in the hands of a compa ny tit to think of. The star is Pattl-Rosa, a charming little English soubrette, who has made lately such a striking success at Koster A Rial's famous concert hall In New York City, appearing there first on the W.tth night of the house, Jan. 22 Pattl-Rosa is sure to be a success here. She is pretty, dresses in excellent taste, and Is, besides, unique, merry, picturesque, thoroughly clever, graceful, charming, and at the same time en dowed with an inexhaustible spirit of humor. Her voice is a sweet mezzo soprano. Her talent is unquestioned; and we think her one of the cleverest soubrettes we have ever seeu. The rest of the company Is first-class, and Monday eve ning's entertainment will certainly be an enjoy able one. If you want a bargain in canned goods, now is the time.
