(a.) Noiilliennt Dakota, White Lake, Da., Oct. 9, 1882. EtU. of rree Irxiler: Perhaps few of the many readers of your valuable paper will bo interested with a short Item con cerning the present condition, and future prospects of this beautiful portion of tho northwest. The broad praino of Dakota, with its fertile soU, is at present attracting atten tion from nearly every poiut between here and the Atlantic; and the heavy immigra lion cin be fully realized only by one who Is here to witness the' continual arrival of emigrants from the different Mates lrom the extinguished lands of Wisconsin, the tax-burdened districts of lows, tho bygone states of Illinois and Indiana, and from the over-crowded states further cast all seeking cheap and comfortable homes for themselves and families, which are offered hero, by the government, to every worthy and industrious citizeu. Wo draw a line between the northern and southern boundaries of this large tcr ritory and claim a decided advantage in the variety ot crops raised. Our soil deep and rich, lieing composed of a dark sandy loam, mixed with a vegetable nioulil and a clay subsoil, making a strocg, quirk soil, well adapted to the growth ofx luxurious Teirelaiion. The soil has bcei i .horoughly tested, sod c6r, cereal kBO u to tho stales farther cast of here thrives ex ceedingly well. From our own observation in our im niodiato vicinity, nnd from the crop statis tics in general, wo predict that tho produc tions of Dakota, per acre, this year, will bo far in advance of any state in tho union. This season oats avcrago from fiO to 7") bushels, and wheat from 3D to -10 bushels per acre; potatoes in abundance, and corn promises a heavy yield. We have had plenty of rain and none too much to keep the ground in good con dition. Occasionally we have a short dry spell, hut tho word drought has no more slgHiflceiico with m than with thoeo who live on the other tide of the Mlsstasippi. Stock raising u. a grand success, not withstanding tho long mid dreary winters, tho fearful blizzards, &c, that dwell In tho fertilo imagination of many of our eastern friends. Stock here, as in every other country, requires necessary care and altec tiou j but with our sweet aud nutritious grasses, and superior quality of hay, will keep iu good conditiou tho year around. Many ol our settlers have exercised the three rights of acquiring land, thus estab lishing stock-ranches of 480 acres, and nre pressing this business with earnestness and great success. Kight hero, permit us, as briefly as possible, to state tho necessary proceedings to acquire public laud. Ev ery person twenty-one years of age, nnd a citizen of the United States cr having flic a declaration of intention to become sucl., is entitled to tho three rights, viz: Pre emption, Homestead and Timber Culture. Parties desiring to preempt, must in per son select the land, make the entry, make tho proper tilings ut tbo land nllice, settle upon the tract, erect a dwelling and im prove tho laud by plowing, digging a well, or otherwise. After living upon the sam .- six months they are entitled to a dead, by making proof by two witnesses that they have complied with the law as to settle ment, itc, and paying 1.23 per ucrc. They have a right to prove up alter tin six months have expired, but are not com pelled to until thirty-three months from date of entry. To homestead, the parties, alter lnakin.; the necessary filings, are allowed six months to move ou the. land, and must adopt it as their homo, improve it, and livo ou it for five years, and upon proof of these facts are entitled to a patent; or alter liv ing on it six months can provo up the same as on a preemption, and pay $1.25 per acre and receive title. Soldiers and seamen who served in tho army during the recent rebellion for ninety days, or ia tho case of death their widow or minor chil dren have a right to deduct a full timo of their service, not to exceed four years, out of tho five years residence required en the land, and also have the privilege of filing a declaratory statement of their intention to enter a cerium tract nmier the ncme stcad law, and it Is then held by the goy crnment for them six mouths. Tuis state ment can be filed by the power ofnn ntloj. ney, and the only ndvantago gained by n soldier's declaration is that it holds the tract out of the market for those fix months. The timber culture is nn act requiring the person making entry to have five acres broken during tho first year, and five acre in addition the second year. The five acre i broken tbo first year is required to tic cul tivated tbo second year, and plaDied to timber seed, cuttings or trees during the third year. The five acres plowed the sec ond year shall be cultivated during tho third year, and the fourth year planted in like manner, to timber, as the lir.-t live, acres. There shall be planted not le-s than 00 trees on each acre which must bo cultivated for eight years, vhtu thci ; must he at least 075 living, thrifty trcis upon each acre. I'pon proof of these r - quircnients a pateut will bo issued. The party is entitled to a patent in eight years, hut is not compelled to prove up nul l thirteen years, and the government espe : ally exempts the same from taxation dur ing said time. Under this net tin re cmi be only one quarter in each section. Ein-ti ot the above rights is limited to 100 acn j. We are located in Aurora county, on the shores of a large lake, which derives ;s name from its clear nnd pure water. Tli s county, lying at tho foot of the Wessin;.'. ton Hills, contains excellent larmini: lan-i, which is being taken rapidly, and we ve:;. ture the assertion that ere six months the e will not be a vacant qu irter in Aur.nii county. Plaukinton is the county h-;U, sit. uated on a line of the C. M. & St. P. It. V. , forty- four mih s east of the Missomi river. The climate is healthy and lnvigoratim-, and our society will compr.ro favorably with that of any country, there being no lack of civility aud genuine hospitality. Everybody is welcomed and cordially r ceived, and we would advise those who are dissatisfied with their present circum stances, and wish to better their conditio':, to come to Dakota where health, v.csh-i and prosperity await them.
