"Caprice," Memidaiitu Willis s urcncsira. Willis's orchestra has at last a thorough musician at the head of it, and the change in the quality of its performances during the past few months has been very noticeable. Prof. Stokes, leader, Is really one of the finest violinists w ho have ever made Ottawa their home. Until the mu.slcale some weeks ago at Mr. Nash's very few knew that a new man was here, and fewer still had noticed his play li:g; but his work on that occasion was so re markably line that, diltldent as he Is, he could no longer hide his lamp under the tra ditional bushel. There Is plenty of material in Ottawa for a Hist class orchestra. It only needed a good leader to mobilize it. The best of it has always been found in the member ship of Willis's orchestra, but it must be con fesscd the quality of the music produced by them had not been worthy of any consider- able attention. Now, however, there is an opportunity for genuine commendation. The) deserve notice. A viola has been added to strengthen the strings and a trombone to perfect the brasses, and other pieces: are to be added. A number of new overtures of 'real musical value have been lately produced here, and others are in practice, showing that the orchestra as an orchestra is prepared for gen eral concert work of high grade, while as in dividuals it contains three really fine soloists. They propose to make concert work a feature in tho future. This fact, in connection with a revival of the Musical Association, should make the coining local musical season a most interesting one. Miss Marcellus' friends in La Salle and McLean counties will b pleased to learn of her rapid advancement." J. D. II. It will be admitted by all our readers that the absence of the letters of our excellent occasional correspondent "J. D II.," has been more noticeable in the pant year than agreeable. They were thoroughly enjoyable always, and wo believe universally appreciated and looked for from week to week. The few who know how much lain is leuiiired to prepare such matter under usual circumstances the more admired them as we diil, bccmisi- of the fact that the time for preparing them had to be stolen from an active business life on the road. Mr. Ham mond is n good observer and knows how to tell the story of the interesting things he sees In his travels - and few travelers cover more ground than he. He has during the past year somewhat gotten out of the notion of writing, but has lately, at the solicitation of hi friends, promised to reform, and that he will again send us letters from time to time. Hi.- many warm personal friends in this county will be well pleased with this fact, and will adil that there can hardly be too many of them. A Remarkable Escape. Mrs. Mary A.
