Tc-meT0w will be St. Valentine's day and to-Jay the beaux and belles will busy them selves selecting their tributes to those they love. The custom is one of those ancient traditions mythical in its origin. The four teenth of each February is commemorated as the death of St. Valeotinus, a Roman Bishop, who was beheaded during the reign of the Emperor Claudius. During the earlier ages it was a custom in many countries, especially in Northern Europe, for the young people so assemble on this occasion. The names of the young ladies present were placed in a box on a piece of separate paper and each gentlc- mitt drew out .hp. The name of the young lady on the paper was to be his valentine or sweeiheart for a twelve-month thereafter. He was to be her special attendant and far orite for the year, in fact, her all-around de voted and constant admirer. And mill an other tradition ascribes the custom of Valen tine's day to the fact that at this time the birds of the air and the beasts of the field select their mates. Though the origin of the custom is too hazy to admit of any well-defined cause, yet it is one that seems to have many believers if one were to judge by the amount of money expended in valentines as the day draws near. The pen of the poet and the genius of the artist have been em ployed to do justice to the occasion, and there is no reason why it should not survive for aye. Our friend, "II. K. G.," with the ardor of his more youthful years writes thusly of his valentine: Tuo poet "Laureate," this day, Although he's growing somewhat gray, Will wing his thoughts to early May, And he will say in simple lay, What kind of maid he loves to day. He loves a maid with a heart light, That looketh on the side that's bright, That's hopeful till the day is night. He loves a maid that hath some cheer For heavy hearts when life seems drear, And who, when standing by the bier, Can say there's hope, for God is near. Ho loves a cheerful, gentle maid, Who, to do wrong, would be afraid, Whose works impress like gold inlaid. He loves a maid, who, if she's blest With ample means to keep well dressed, Can think of those who have no rest Because that they are so hard pressed. Ho loves a maid, with sprightly tread, With a well-balanced shapely head, Who knowcth how to make good bread, And knowetu, after she is wed, That store accounts have to be paid, And gocth not too oft to trade. He loves a maid, who, tenderly, Would cling, in dark adversity, Like ivy to the stricken tree. He loves, he loves well, never mind, The maid he loves is hard to find, For love, they say, is partly blind. So now, on this fine Valen'day, The poet "Laureate" would say, If he was hopeful, young as once, He thinks he would not be a dunce, Nor be afraid of a fair maid ; For, if for love, his heart did thirst, And nectar did not How at first, He'd rally 'round his maid again. Ho would his bow and arrow strain, He'd smite the mount with all his main, I'ntil the fouut would run like rain, And thus he would his maiden gain ; For, such a maid would seem divine, And worthy of n Valentine, With words, that breathed in every line, "0 be thou mine and I'll be thine." Installation of Olllters. A public installation of oflicers of Inde pendent Lodge, No. 9S, A. 0. U. W., and of Howard Legion, No. 4'i, Select Knights, was held at the Opera House Tuesday evening, which brought out nn almost packed house to witness the ceremonies. M. T. Moloney made the opening remarks, which were fol lowed by the installation of Lodge 9B, Grand Master Workman W. II. Hull and Past Grand Master Workman J. F. Reed olliciating. The following officers were duly installed, hold inn their left hands on the bible and the right raised aloft : Master Workman, C. L Simon ; Foreman, J. J. Damm ; Overseer, Charles E. Hills; Recorder, J. H. Wilson Financier, .Times McManus ; Receiver, Jos Meaafiin : Guide, John Costello; Inside Watchman, John Downey; Outsido Watch man, A. Gerteney. Then Mr. Moloney ir. vested Pust Master Workman Hull with a handsome badge of his otlice in a few well chosen and appropi iate words eulogistic of his worth and services, to which Mr. Hull responded happily and pleasantly nt some length. The badge bore the inscription: "Presented to P. M. W. Wm. II. Hull from members of Independent Lodee, No. I'K, A O. V. W., Ottawa, 111., lS8fi." The curtain hre was dropped, and after the arrange tm-nts were completed for the second instal lation Henry Mayo delivered the speech of the occasion, descriptive of the aims and workintrs of the order. The installation of the ollicers of Howard Legion then took place, the installing officers being Grand Commander Hull and Grand Guide Reed, as follows: Select Commander, C. L. Simon; Vice Commander, J. B. Harris ; Lieut. Com mander, Geo. Pruett ; Recorder, J. II. VYil son; Reed. Treasurer, II. A. Aronstein; Treasurer, Chas. F.. Smith ; Marshal, Frank Frost ; Standard Bearer, E. J. Kelly, These oflicers made their promises of fidelity to the order by placing their left hands on the bible and the right behind their backs. J ho ceremonials attendant on the installation were highly impressive. Willis's full or chestra furnished the music. I'oor .Ioe' Dentil. Saturday night a shocking tragedy occur red near Morris. Joe Smedley, of that city, who had been working at La Salle, got on the bumpers of a cir to ride home. When about a wile and a half from Morris he was thrown off by the sudden jerking of the train and his right leg was caught tinder the wheels and fearfully crushed, the bones and flesh being fearfully mangled. Of course the limb had to be amputated, his death next day being the result. His wife and baby arrived a short time before his death, as did also his mother, frm Minonk. The A'r of Morris pathetically describes the sad tragedy, its follows: "After the train had passtd he crawled to the north track and then commenced the journey homeward on his hands and one knee, drawing the mutilated limb, which crimsoned the snow in his path. A train approached from the east, upon the track which he was then on, when he again dragged himself over the deep snow between the tracks and took to the south track. Along came another train froii. the east, but the engineers cither did not see him or paid no attention to him. Fr one hour and ten minutes the poor fellow drag ged himself over the frozen now, on that chilly morninr, with a mangled limb, fingers frozen, and his blood fast leaving him an hour which must have seemed a terrible long one to poor .toe. Thus he dragged himself 2G- yards. The trail of blood was plainly visi ble. He heard a train anproachinz. If he could only make his presence and condition known! Leaving the track he awsitei the train. V hen the glare of the headlight wm full upon bim he waved a frozen hind; he .down brtks. ihe wft stopr.e(J ,nd by it poor Joe wis brought to the station." The reoptiou xtriuitu iu a larjie num ber of their frlenils iu l!ii city by Mr. anil Mrs. F. L. Flsk at their uw and cleg mi residence, 1110 North IW street, Tuesday evening was un elti;aut affair. The recep tion was given In commemoration f the 2otli anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Fiske. About !!00 Invitations had been sent out und nearly all responded by belnjr present. To the elegance of the permnnent decorations of the rooms were added elaborate decorations of beautiful potted plants and cut flowers, making one of the most charming reception rooms the city has ever seen. The refreshments were prepared by the celebrated Chicago caterer, Kckhtirdt, and served In his fault less manner. The reception was, in fact, superb in all Its appointments, and it will be long remem tiered by those present as delightfully pleasant, and characterized by everything that makes such an assemblage enjoyable. The Rink closed Wednesday night with an exhibition by the La Salle Silver Cornet Hand on rollers. This once gTcat popular place of amusement w ill be converted Into a store room for the E. De La Chappelle et Cie Lamp Chimney works. A portion of it will be also used by the Sanders Uros. as it work shop. wm Curea CVukI, Colds, Bnanvnvw.
