Teachers are always more or less iiinniyed by complaints from two claseis of areuts. One class complain thai the work in school is noi done thoroughly, and that the uj ils are hot compelled to do enough work ; while the other class complains that the excessive liar 1 work of the High School course is kill ing the pupils, nil 1 that the health of a large number is permanently injured by it. To remove boih these evils is evidently beyond the power of the teacher, as he cannot go in I two directions at once ; but in the gnat ma jority of cases it is in the power of the pa rents, aud of the parents alone, to do so. In most places it is not customary for young people to come out in society and attend lale evening parties till they have finished their high school or academic course ; w hile hero in Ottawa the social demand, with its conse quent strain upon the nervous system, seems greater upon our high school pupils than upon those of more mature years. Not that all are weakened in mind uud body in this way, but enough are to keep back and hinder almost every class. I wish to urge upon the parents that they do what they can to remove this difficulty; that they see to it that their children are at home every evening when there are lessons to be recited the next day; and that even on Friday and Saturday eve nings they are not out very late. It is said that good health is worth more than an cdu cation. True; but in many cases you are letting them rob themselves of both f ir a lit tle fiivuloui party going. If your chil Jren are tiatuially sickly, let them do liht w irk an 1 tukc five years for the liih School cuir.-c; hi. t f tht ir weakness is caused ly la'e hours and frivolity, yuii can keep them at home.
