(iraut's administration is certainly a marvel ot economy ! liut I am willing t leave these figures to be studied and mastered by an intelligent . and candid people It i certainly no matter of wonder that, wah ail these evidences of wasteful expen :.. irrs before him, the chairman of tin co:utn:Uee on appropriations should, frorr his place in ihe house, have spoken of ii morn is sorrow than in anjrer. J read Spain from the ipeech of Mr. Dawes, of the 18th of January last : ' Mr. I)awen I ha a right to complain of the other end of the avenue, that with all its professions of economy and reduction ot unneccessary force in the departments, with all the heraidini; by telegraph or otherwist of its purpose of reduction, there is not one of these departments that does not estimate to-day. in the book I have before me, foi an increase of expenditure over the appro priationa of last year, save only one, and that is the poor, nnponlar, ittoniey general I hope it is not because of this remarkabli trait in his character that it is contemplated at the other end of thecapitol to relieve birr from furiher publicservice, and to drive him into private life.-' I'L'HI.iC I.AMlH. Perhaps no better evidence can be found of the utter demoralization and profligacy it. tnc administration of our affairs than is aeei. in the wreckless, wate nod corrupt aquan derinff of our magnificent public duuniiiis liefore the acoession to power of the repub lican party, grants of land to some ot tti Vt'eitero states had been made to aid i public improvements. The grant to Illinois to aid in the construction of tiie lilinoi. raiiroad. amounted to aboot 2,500,000 acres 'i hse generally resulted iu promoting the public welfare. It was not until Irfi2 tha the trick was inaugurated of voting wai whole empires to private corporations mad i'P of rings of organized favorities of the party in pnwir In that year, at one fool swoop, :;j,00.000 acres were granted to the ' niou Pacific liailroad company alone. I shy nothing hero of the imperial Bubsidy in government bonds granted to the nam company. Not. satisfied with this, in ISiii congress granted to an association of entl men, organized tinder the name of the Northern Pacific Kailroad comp.nv, each alternate section of anempireKO miles wide and stretehmg clear across the continent' from LKe Superior to the Pacific oc-ar The estimated number of acres contained in thin grant is 47,000.000, e,v,i t0 ,he entir area of the great gtat-s of Ohio and Indiana Not content with this, an act was passed during the late session of congress, aud approved by the preaidenton the 31st day of Mat last increasing very largely this grant, and the franchises and privileges of this now imperial corporation. A number of other grants of this character have been made that I cannot now stop to enumerate I lod in my hand "The Hand-Book of Po itics" just pnhlished, by Mr McPherson the republican clerk of the house of repre enta,M. On page 625 will be found table .bowing the area of the land states, Ib9 -moM of Un4 g?Mto(j to panada, the To this table is appended the following note : "The amount remaining on band ts subject to a reduction of 163,49(3,626 acres, granted bv congerss to aid in the construe ,,,,,, ,i'rifmad lines, and not yet Beleoted and certified to them." Can any mind here take in these enor nious figures at one grasp ? 163,000,000 acres awaiting selection by organized rings of plunderers under grants already made by- congress? How much is this? We can only comprehend its magnitude by cotnpariv son. The State of Indiana contains but 21,000,000 acres, and Ohio the empire state of the west, contains but 25,000,000. There is a fraction over in each case. Out I state it in round numbers for convenience. This land, then, now awaiting selection by the land grabbers, under acts of congress already passed (according to this republican authority,) If consolidated into one body, would mrke neven states of the eize of Indiana, or six states of ihesizeof Ohio, and in either case we would have land enough lett to make several New England states. Put this is not all. Something like a cart load of hills erenow pending in congress asking for additional land grant. They he there awaiting the action of the people at the polls. Some o! them have alreaey passed the senate. If the men who have- made these erants are indorsed by re election, then farewpll 1o the homesteads of the homeless and of unborn generations. Th poor will bo given over to oppression, and oue half of our country to the heartless domination of monster corporations, R3PCItMCA!I STATE CONVENTION. Our friends of the republican party met here iu convention ou the 1st inst. Repre senting what has been for ten years or more the dominant party of our imperial state, their responsibilities were great, and, look ing myself only to the interests of our great country, 1 will frankly admit that I hoped and expected a far dlderent result from their deliberations. 1 hoped to Bee this great party, with so much power, for good or evil, lake a rew departure in the norib-BfeBt, or at least in Illinois, fciiu to beur thr-m assert, with nil hesitatiug or uu ertniu voice, the rights of the west, and to boldly proclaim that they will no longer be the mere tail to ihe kite of New England and the monev lords who are rioting on the fruits of our labor, and annually robbing os of uncoiint d millions. 1 hoped to bear them proclaim that the great republican party of the west will no longer be mere cat's paws in th hand, of the bondholders, bankers, manu facturers and land grabbers, who are eeizi"tf by wholesale upon the inheritance of the peop'e. As an lliiuoisan, proud of our nohle itHte, I read the platform adopted here bt 'hat convention with feelings of pain and mortification.
