Tuesday veatae; , Tebrtaf S8. 171. EDIT01UL CtlMSMlDEKCE. Badness rpei-H 5ime Waatalnrton's Birthday and how It was Obrrd Oration by OoL Saaforth. Ksw York, Feb. 23, 1871 Did you ever min a train and have the itrem pleasure on arriving at the junc tion of learning that yoo were juit ten min ateslate? We here, on two well remem be red oocaaionr. One in company with food looking wagon manufacturer of Mo line. It was interesting to tee bow be en joyed it. Quite so, to eee him develops bit pedestrian powers between tbe junotion and Pond Creek. Oor lait experience was all to ourselves. Saturday night between Cin oinoaliaod Pittsburg. ''Change care for Pittsburg," eried the conductor. We did change, and it took us just tvcenty-thrte hours and fifty minute to obaage. "What j pleasant reflection! may come when we are left at a way station," beats the dreams we are told of two to one. At last we reached Pittoburg, that smoky oity, that eomplex of municipalities, com posed of two cities end eleven boroagbs a city that ii to the East what Rock Island will be to the West tbe great manofactur ing ceo ire. This oity is not to one visiting it f r the first time, a very attractive-looking place. The dense volumes of black smoke pouring from the hundreds of furnaces, tbe copious sbowers of soot, tbe constant rum- ling of ponderous machinery, the clatter of wagons laden with iron, are experiences that are not calculated to make a favorable impression at first. In a very brief time, however, the visitor learns that the black canopy is tbe "pillar of oloud" to Pittsburg, era, assuring them that the vast industries are still prosperiag. He learcs, too, that the rugged-looking billa bounding the bori on are full of riches in tbe shape of bitu minous coal. The mass of the inhabitants, if they do labor and toil, are educated, even refined, ever alive to the beautiful as well as to the useful. They are clever, sociable) and generous. Tbe publio buildings, churches, halls, etc, compare favorably with any in the land, in spite of the awful smoke. It takes one some time to learn tbe location and extent ot this city. The Monongahela river sweeps from the south through the most densely populated dis tricts, forming with the Allegheny riven flowing from the northeast, the beautifnl Ohio. Pitubarg proper lies between the two rivers. On the south side are situated the boroughs of Ormsby, East Birmingham, West Pittsburgh, Allentown, Birmingham Monongahela, and Temperanoeville. On the north bank of the Allegheny am the cities of Allegheny and the boroughs of Etna and Sherpeburg. The total area covered may be estimated at about twenty-five square miles. Nine bridges cross the rivers and the aggregate population, according to ttie census recently completed, amounts tc very nearly two hundred thousand, while the entire county of Allegheny, which shoula properly be included in an estimate of tbt population ot Pittsburg, would give a total population of over 263,000. We mention these things to show what manufacturing has done for Pittsburg, and what they ui no tor nooa- island ana her sister cities, and we do not know ,bu that ever grander results may be achieved i: ail unite to improve our natural advantages But enough for this subject. We left the smoky city in the full enjoyment of excell ent sleighing, which was being duly im proved, to bod Philadelphia and New York with their fashion, beauty and wealth, enjoy ing the name, and trying to forget hard times, dull trade and the general stagnation of business behind their fast teams and gay equipages filled with well dressed men and beauti.ul women. Western men who complain of dull timet should come to the larger eastern cities and then go home satisfied. Everywhere and in all departments of trade it is the lima "Business dull, collections hard and genera bnancal ruin staring the oountry in tht face." Yet, with this state of things tht capital of the nation baa just passed through a great carnival where the Royal family of Grant tbe I, occupied a private balcony (whose owner will probably be sat isfied with a foreign consulate) and reviewed tbe procession, reminding one of the fabled Nero at the burning of Rome. Business men here in Philadelphia and Pittsburg anxiously ask, "Why don't youi vettera merchants come East for their sum. mer goods ? How does it look for trade in the West this year ?" And a dozen similar ques tions, all indicating that tbe relief from the present close times is expected from the West and its unlimited p-odactions, instead of from the powers that rule at Washington, who are piling on the taxes to pay a nation al debt that is not due for ten years to corns' This polioy of the government is being severely criticized by the leading business men, and is having the effect to hasten the change in public sentiment for more compe tent men in congress and at the head of the departments. But to leave this subject, for we know western men are tl inking of these thing w.ib as much interest as eastern capitalist. Yesterday was Washington's birth day aud tbe begiuning of Lent, two causes tha. united to make it a holiday in this city Business was suspended, and all over tht city , from a thousand balconies and house tops floated the national flag. Broadway, tbe great aorta of tbe city, was one vas stream of moviog life, and presented a scene that reminded one of tbe pact, when it used to be considered an impossibility to cross the street without danger to limb and life. But we will not attempt a description, as most of our readers have seen the city. We meet but few western men, and we beliove oily one Rock lslaud man, Mr. F. C. Coss, our popular wholesale dealer in boots and shoes, speut a day in the city and then left for Boston to purchase a heavy stock of goods for the western trade. He was in exonllent health and enjoying Lis trip just as any business man should. We have also made the acquein- since ot air. lay lor, wno some years ago was in the agricultural implement business in Rock Island, but is now handling Span ish gold on Wall street. Col. J. B. Dan. forth, who needs no format introduction to the readers of the Arocb, is spending the winter here, and devotes a portion of his time to literary pursuits- He is fast associ ating himself with the best men of the city. Last evening he delivered, by special invita tion, an oration before the Fifteenth ward, Wm. M. Tweed Association, of which he is a member. It may be a matter of interest to his many friends to kcow that it wss a laooets, and gained for him very flattering aotioes in the daily papers of tbe oity. It was prepared foe tha occasion of a oeWbra- tioa of the day by the Association, and o con pied an hoar and a quarter in its delivery. We will not attempt to do the oration jus tice, as we have already transgressed to limits of one letter. Its scope embraced a condensed view of tha life and services of Washington, with a brief analysis of his oK.r.tar Thi WAS followed by fWTieW of the first eonfederation, pointing out its faults, the reason for adopting a more per feet Union, and explaining the principle .i r : :nn drawing mooaiea in iUuini...v-, .nrf distinct line between u. r id distinct line between toe nAMn KreD led by the States to the Federal Gov ... i .L. States end tha ernmeni. out reservea to " u ti.;. followed by review or Washington's Farewell Address; giving copious extracts irou- the present Radical party has treated with contumely end eootempt the advice of the Father of his Country, and violated the Con stitution and the plain principles of the Gov ernment he to feelingly commended to the eare and protection of those who should come after him. Ha then ebowed, by the State Rights resolution of the first Lnooln Convention of 1860, and by the Amnesty resolution of the Grant Convention in 1868, how the radioal party had obtained power by false pretences and fraud, and then be' ied and repudiated the pledges they made to obtain the votes of the people, closing this portion of the address by reading an eloquent extract from tha recent speech in Congress of Hon. 3. S. Cox on amnesty. We cannot refrain from quoting the dosing sentences of the oration, which we Snd pub lished in the Evening Express, for the rea son it gives to democrats everywhere the key-note to success in the coming presiden lial election. He said in dosing Mr. Presdieot How can this association aid the Democrauo party iu driving this faithless and unsurpiog Radical party from power! now can toe Democratic) party regain the ascendency and restore the Fed- eral Government to tbe principles on whiob it was founded T By ceasing to waste iu strength on the dead issues of the past. By keeping before the people the real and living issues ot the hour, such as free trade, the resumption of specie payments, tbe equali sation aud reduction ot taxes, the reduction uf expenses, the restoration of publio credit, greater simplicity and economy m the affairs of government, the rigid accountability ot all who handle the publio fund, the resto ration of the executive and judicial depart ments to their constitutional rights, tbe stop ping of the stealing of the public lands auo of the squandering of the publio funds, and the exposure of the oorruplions of the party m power. Liet us recognize things as they are- We mnst obey the Constitution as it is not as it was. We most not seek to disturb the reconstructed State Governments, but with draw from them all military interference and leave the people free to manage theii own local affairs ia their owi v, subjeot only to the Constitution, tbe courts and the laws We mnst not seek to disturb the newlv- enfranehised voters in their rights, but show bat their true interest lies iu not herding together in clans, but in acting independ ently and as their better judgments shall dictate. It is votes we want, in order to train power. We can never restore the Uovern- inent to tbe true principles of the Constitu tion while we remain out of power. To regain power, we must pursue such a course as will bring to our ranks aid from all who nave votes to give free trade votes, Fenian votes, female votes, free soil votes, colored votes, or white votes let us welcome ail wh will join ns in inaugurating and establishing neb reforms as will bring the Government back to economy and honesty, restoring it to tbe principles of the Constitution and preserving the liberties of the people. It is true that the late elections given good grounds to nope tor success it we make no mistakes. We have now an appar ent majority in the Union both on the popo lar and the electoral vote. Bat we should remember that this was obtained on a I smaller aggregate vote than will be cast at a Presidential election. We have no force to spare. We want recruits, and we shall get hem, if we are prudent. But so long as Democrats continue o fight about war issues, to denounce reconstruction and negro iu Brags, and to trouble themselves more about tbe past than the present or the future, so long will tbey be in the minority and ont of power. Politically, nearly every Repub lican State is ripe for Revolution, ready for the utter repudiation and crashing ont of the Radical system of monopoly, proscrip lion and corruption. But to do this we must be prudent in our enunciation of prin ciples, prudent in tbe nomination of candi- 1a-.es, careful of tbe rights of others, pre serve harmony and maintain vifror in our ranks, and in tbe words of one of America's song writers K.ep sUp with tbs mniio of Union, The musis our forefathers sang, Wbtn States, lis a jubilant chorus, To bsautifal sisterhood sprung. 0 thus Shall their great Constitution, Thatgaards all th homes in the land, A mountain of freedom and justioe for millions eternally stand. JOSEPH H. SOHKXCK'S SIMPLE TREATMENT, And availed themselves of bis wonderfully effi- aoi(ameiieiaes, they woald not have fallen. Dr. Soheaok possesses too muoh reverence for the Omnipotent to intimate that by his instru tnentalitytbos who are smitten by the Divine hand with approaching death eaa be restored to life and health by any agency. But he does as sert, and has in his own ease proved, that whan' ever suffioieut vitality remains, that vitality, by his medioines and his directions for their use, Is quiokened into healthful vigor. Ia th;s statement there is nothing presume tnous. To the faith ef the invalid is made no repressntation that is not a thousand times sub stantiated by living end visible works. The theory of the eore by Dr. Sohenok's medioines is as simple as it is unfailing. Its philosophy re quires ao argument. It ia self-assuring, self convincing. The Seaweed Tonie and li'endrake Pills are the two first weapons with whiob. the eitadel ot the malady is assailed. Two thirds of the eases of oonsumption originate ia dyspepsia and fanetioaally disordered liver. ' Vith this condi tion the bronchial tubes "sympathise" with the stomach. They respond to the morbifio notion of the liver. Here then comes the ealmlaating result, and the setting in, with all its distressing symptoms ef CONSUMPTION. The Mandrake Pills are ooinpnsed of en of Nature's noblest gifts the Podophyllum Pel tatom. They possess all the blood-searching, alterative properties of a calomel, but unlike cal omel, they "LEAVE NO STING BEHIND." The work of cure is now beginning. The vi tiated and maoous deposits in the bowels and in the alimentary canal are ejected. Tbe liver, like aolook, is wonnd up. It arouses from its torpidity. The stomaoh acts responsively, and the patient begins to (eel that he is getting, at last, A SUPPLY OF GOOD BLOOD. The Seaweed Toaio, in conjunction with the Pills, permeates and assimilates with the food. Chilification is now progressing without its pre vious tortures. Digestion becomes painless, and the oure is seen to be at hand. There is no more Satnlenee, no exacerbation of the stomach. An appetite sets in. Now comes tbe Greatest Blood Purifier vt yet given by an indulgent father to suffering man. Behenck's Pulmonis Syrup comes in to perform its functions, and to hasten andeomplete tbe euro. It enters at onse npoa its work, ' a tare cannot be eheated. It collects and ripens the Impaired and diseased portions, il'tbe lungs, la the form of gatherings it prepares them for expectoration, and lo! in a very short time the malady is vanquished, the rotten throne that i : oosupied is renovated and made new, and the patient in all the dignity of regained vigor, steps forth to enjoy tbe manhood or the womanhood that was GIVES TJP AS LOST. To despair of cure after such evidence of its possibility in the worst cases, and moral certain ty in all others, is sinful. Dr. Schenck's person al statement to the Faculty of his owe cure was in these modest words : "Many years ago I was in the last stages of oonsumption, confined to my bed, and at one time my physician thought I could not live a week ; then, like a drowning man catching at a straw, I heard of and obtained the preparations which I now offer to ths publio, and they made a perfect oure of me. It seemed to me that I sould feel them penetrate my whole system They soon ripened the matter ia my lungs, and I wonld spit up mora than a pint ef offensive yellow matter every morning for a long time. "As soon as thst began to subside, my oough, fever, pain and night sweats all began to leave me, aad my appetite became so great that it was with difficulty thai I conld keep from eating too much. I soon gained my strength, and hare grown to fivsh ever sinee. 'I was weighed shortly after mj recovery,' dded the doctor, "then looking like a mere skeleton, my weight was but ninety-seven lbs my present weight is two hundred and twenty live (22i) pounds, and for ysara I have enjoyed uninterrupted health." Dr. Behenek has discontinued his professional visits to Hew York nd Boston, bnt at his office No. 15 North Sixth street, between tbe hours of V A. M. aad 3 P. M., he sees patients every Sat urday. The directions foT taking the medisines are ad apted to ths intelligence even of a child. Fol low these directions, and kind Nature will do the rest, ezoepting that in some oases the Man drake Pills are to be taken in increased doses the three medioines need no other aoeompani cats than tha ample instructions that aceom pan j them. First oreate appetite. Of returning health hi iger is the most welcome sjmptom When it comes, as it will come, let the despairing at onoe be of good cheer. Good blood at once follows, the cough loosens, the night sweat is abated. In a short time both these morbid symptoms are gone forever. Dr. Bcbenck s medicines are constantly kept in tens of thousands of tamilies. As a laxative or purgative tha Mandrake Pills are a standard preparation; while tha Pulmonic Byrup as surer of coughs and colds may be regarded as prophylacterio against oonsumption in any o! its forms. mcMG-dwIy UseBenne'sPainKilling XaXa-Ca-XO OXXa.
