Business and Personal Record. We were honored this week by a call from a party of ladies and gentlemen from Grass Valley—A. B. Dibble and lady, F. Ryan and lady, Mrs. Hunt and Mr. Riley—stopping at the Reis House Mr. Fletcher has returned with put of his family—two bright little boys. The ladies arc still at the Bay O. B. Wright is below on merchandising business ...... In speaking of the new Hall across the way, we have always called it the “Odd Fellows’ Hall,” whereas it is the joint property of the Odd Fellows and Masons. One of the latter wanted to know of us whether the Masons had sold out ? Rut out your shingle, and then we’ll know what to call it Please see Mr. Dow ney’s advertisement of his Hotel. His is a large and spacious house, with exceedingly nice rooms, and all who stop there speak well of the house and its atten tions Wm. floppier and Johnny Lewis have re opened the “Boomerang," under Craycroft Block, and Lave fitted it up in excellent style, where refreshing drinks can always be had...... See Hopkins & Gra ham's advertisement. Dick Martin, Esq., informs us there is to be a grand Barbecue at the Marysville Buttes, cn the 4lh of July— to which he has invited us, promising all sorts of hos pitalities. “Dick” is a generous fellow, and has al ways been a good friend of ours. Notice to Teamsters.— We are requested to notify teamiters that there is a quantity of stale butter in town that won’t wait for the wagon much longer. Dr. Kibbe contemplates opening a Drug Store shortly. He cannot fail of doing a good business. About Piracy.— t lie reader is aware that there is great deal of discussion about the alledged piracy. It is simply a dodge of the law-and-order party to get the United States Government to espouse their quarrel— or more likely, to frighten the Committee to terms. Speaking of the intermedling of the Supreme Bench, the Sacramento Union remarks : “Those rash and fool-hardy acts have dded fearfully to the embarrassments which before surrounded the relative positions ul the State authorities and the Vigilance Committee. And still, not content, an at tempt has been made to complicate the matter still further, by involving the United States officers in the controversy. To do this, an affidavit was made against a member of the Vigilance Committee for piracy, in seizing the arms shipped from this city to San* Francisco, 1 hey were found on board of a sloop in the bay. secreted under a few thousand bricks. Withiqual legality and propriety an affidavit might have bi-en made charging tliosu who took by force the arms from the Law and Order party at the California Exchange, with piracy against the United States. The bay is just as much under the •jurisdiction of the State as that celebrated Exchange. The Constitution of the State, in defining its jounda riea, after the east line strikes the 3oth degree of north latitude says : ‘Thence running west and along said boundary line to the Pacific Ocean, and extending therein three English miles ; thence naming in a north-westerly direction and following the direction of the Pacific coast to the 4-d degree of north latitude.' ‘Also, all the islands, harbors and hays along and adjacent to the Pacific coast.' “We quote the above to show that there can be no question about the bays of San Francisco, Napa, &c., being in the jurisdiction of the State of California, as those very well knew who sued out the process.” Senator Weller wrote a letter to the people of California, in which he made some justification of the killing of Keating by Herbert. The Bulletin answers : “We tell this Senitorial apologist for the crime of a Congressman that Californian’s heart beats with no re sponse to the appeal he has made. We tell him that the picture presented of the widow of that poor Irishman, .bcariDgihur babe to the court-house and, in the frenzy of ber grief, calling on it to look upon the murderer whose act made il an orphan, makes many a heart here swell with sympathy for that mother and that child, and indignation against him who, with cruel hand, slew the one to whom Loth looked for support. We tell him that his constitu ents bow their heads with shame to recognize in such a man as Herbert their Representative, and that there is a universal resolve that he shall be the last gambler to whom opportunity to disgrace California in the eyes of the world will be given.” How bold and nervous that language ! “The intelligence of the arrest of Durkee by the U. S. authorities was received with a warm welcome by the people of this city,” (Sacramento.) A legitimate lie of the State Journal. All the other papers in rebuttal. Robert Burns. — He looked round at us. I thought that he looked through me, and I lost the grip o’ the ’beginning o’ my speech, and for the life o’ me could I sget it again that night. He apologized for being late. He had been getting hi’, thing to us. but it had gone from him. He had composed a song for the occasion, Atid would sing it. He looked round on us and burst into song, such as I never heard before or since. If •ever a sang was sung it was that ane. They werena sham unes. It was a queer sight to see sae mony men bust out like bubbly boys an’ blutibor in spile o’ themsel. Soon after the song he said he could not stay longer.— W ishing us all well, he took his leave, as wc thought, forever.- - Scotch Herald. Gold. “Gold! Gold! Gold! G* Id!
