LETTER FROM SAN FRANCISCO.
[Special Correspondence of the Hkkalo.]
San Francisco, Nov. 4.
The lirst and second numbers of your
weekly paper came to hand, and a re
freshing looking sheet it is, 1 can as
sure you; one that ye good people of
Los Angeles have reason to be proud
of. Your daily issue has taken good
hold here. The dailies quote continu
ally from It, giving credit where
credit is undoubtedly due. The Newt
Letter speaks In the most glowing
terms of the sparkling nature of the
news you give, and its last issue pays
a warm tribute to the individual merit
of your working editor. Go on ami
prosper; wipe everything out of the
tield—as you undoubtedly will do if
you continue iv the good style you
have commenced. If 1 can forward
your views by sending an occasional
dish of gossip from the Bay City, I
shall be glad to serve you, so place me
at your command and here goes:
The New Steam Flows.
In course of conversation with a
large farmer from Solano, he informed
me that he had just received the first
steam plow ever used successfully in
California. He speaks of it in the
most glowing terms, not only for its
marvellous simplicity, but also for the
thorough manner in which It performs
its work and the easy way in which it
is managed. The invention has been
perfected by the Parvin Manufactur
ing Company of Farmington, Illinois,
aud its cost is $4,000. The President of
the company is now in 'Frisco, and
feels confident of being able to intro
duce his patent on all the large farms
of the State. So important an inven
tion as this will undoubtedly wake up
your farmers, and in time we may look
forward to the hand plow as being a
thing of the past.
The Lay or thr Last Balloon.
The biggest of all sells was perpe
trated on our ever suffering public last
Sunday, by the proprietors of the City-
Gardens. For weeks past it has been
freely advertised that Professor Lay,
of aeronautic fame, proposed plunging
into matrimony with a young lady of
the name of Smith, and in order that
so important an event should be con
summated in the highest style of
fashion, the ceremony would be per
formed in a balloon moored 1,000 feet
above the gardens. Naturally, so
startling au announcement attracted
a large crowd; in fact the people were
packed as close as sardines. The time
fixed was 3 o'clock. At that hour the
balloon was inflated, the Professor was
here, there and everywhere; the tow
ering form of the Justice of the Peace
surveyed the crowd with calm non
chalance, and the bride elect was, it is
presumed, receiving the condolence of
her female friends in some neighbor
ing arbor, as she was not visible. All
were on the tip toe of expectation, the
ear was attached, the Professor gave
the word "Let go," and as the balloon
shot up sang out again "Hold on;" but
as the rope attached was nearer
ten feet to one thousand feet in length,
his oribr was in vain, for although
willing hands grasped at the cord, it
was of no avail, it slipped through the
many hands, and the air ship went
floating through the air witli the
greatest of ease, like a daring young
man we have read of on a flying tra
peze. An open-mouthed crowd gazed
skywards for a moment or so, and then
alas the thorough sell of the whole
a flair was realized, ami many slunk
oil' heartily ashamed of the manner
iv which they had been taken in.
It lias since transpired that the bal
loon was rotten and useless, owing to
the salt water bath it received in con
junction with two newspaper reporters
on a recent occasion, and that Profes
sor Lay thought to make a little more
coin out of his worn out bag before
parting with it forever.
Board Ship Horrors.
You have doubtless beard of the
trial of Captain Clarke, of the Sunrise,
how he ill treated his crew, how two
uien and a boy, to escape his cruelties,
jumped overboard, how his mate took
leg bail, how the little Post took the
matter up, and the Chronicle, Call and
Alta followed suit, what a fuss was
made of the whole concern, principally
because there was a dearth of news of
any other kind. Public excitement
was supposed to run very high on the
matter, but public excitement did very
little of the kind, for those who knew
anything of board ship life, and the
troubles captains have to endure when
lumbered up with a lot of fresh water
sailors, knew that the matter was ex
aggerated; and the evidence tended to
show in this direction, notwithstand
ing that the witnesses were the dis
affected sailors. Those that did not
know anything about salt water mat
ters did not care much about the affair
anyhow. The trial resulted in a toler
ably complete verdict against the
skipper; lie was to have been sentenced
yesterday, but the usual legal excep
tions, errors, etc., have been entered,
and tbe further hearing of the case
lias been postponed. As to the result,
I see you publish our daily stock
report; therefore any little incidents
connected with this great gambling
mania of ours may prove interesting.
The rage now is "Belmont," selling
the other day for six bits, sold on Sat
urday for twenty dollars. A well
known speculator and great running
expert was very sweet on "Belmont"
from its first inception, invested very
heavily, and stuck to his text in the
face of all decline. It is said that
matters at last got so very blue with
him, througb his love for his falling
friend, that about ten days ago his
affairs were about being placed in the
hands of his friends; but now ull is
changed, and on Saturday evening last
he went home worth some quarter of
a million of dollars. Oh, how inscru
table are the ways of stocks, and how
varied is the luck of those who dabble
in the marvelous scrip.
How are you otrm.r Vegetables?
There appears to be every prospect
of a heavy strike amougßt our market
gardeners. The sapient body of men
known as the City Fathers, alius the
Supervisors, have recently ordered,
that the market wagons laden with
potatoes and other vegetables, shall
not stand on Sausome street as hereto
fore, but in another part of the city.
This order tbe gardeners would not
obey, aud some dozen of them were
brought up the other day for breaking
a city ordinance. This only marie them
more determined; learning that tbe
prosecution would be continued until
the bitter end, they have leagued
themselves together and concluded
not to sell any more vegetables at
their ranches, or send any more into
town until the order is re|>ealed.
Should both sides stand ilirtu, house
keepers will be in a pretty lix, and we
shall have to suspend a solitary j>ola
toe over the dining room table, indulg
ing in meat and "point."
There has been a perfect surfeit of
amusements here lately, but very
meagre audiences. Shiel Barry has
been doing Irish characters at the
"California," without any very great
success. The burnt cork troupe still
flourish at the "Alhambra," Opera
Botlffe at Gray's Opera House, now
owned by Maguire, ami the Italian
Opera Company at Piatt's Hall, pre
senting I'Africiiiue on a llfteeii foot
stage, whilst here and there a concert
or a lecture, lias been thrown in by
way of a delicate morsel. The long
and tbe short of it is, that we have
had too much of it altogether, aud our
city cannot stand four places of first
class (so called] amusements, at one
time, in addition to its "sing songs,"
"dives," and such like doubtful places
All hands are preparing and some
bauds are praying for rain. It is not
far off by the looks of the skies.
Many sharp maps of frost lately, have
had the tendency to make the chilly
mortals look very blue about the nose.
With the experience of the past two
years before us of leaky roots, stopped
up waste pipes, and such like little
evils.tbe roofers and plumbers are reap
ing a rich harvest, and as one walks
along the streets, one's nostrils are con
tinually refreshed with the odor of
burning pitch, rosin etc., preparatory
to tbe laying on of the mixture on the
worn out plastered up roofs of our
ancient domiciles. Good night.
