LETTER FROM MEMPHIS.
Memphis, (Term)., Nov. 8, 1873.
Fditor Los Axoeles Herald:—
Some body has been kind enough to
send me a copy of your weekly, for
which I return thanks, and if you will
put my name on jour subscription
list as a dead-head, i promise to send
you an occasional letter. I noticed
your advertisement in the News Le(
trr } and I susjjected that you had been
stealing my thunder in the matter of
your principles. Be independent, as
a matter of course, —near no collar
of any party or clique,—but keep con
stantly in view tiie great head-light
of Republicanism: State Rights.
Read. Mr. Stephens' book every now
aad then to keep your memory re
freshed, and your instinct correct.
Fight Centralism (which is Imperial
ism), and corruption. If you would
make a paying paper, however, do not
devote too much space to matters out
side the county of Los Angeles. Ex
cuse me, I do not wish to give advice,
but to approve.
I have seated myself to talk to old
friends and acquaintances, whom I
may never meet on earth again, and
whom I cherish with fond tenderness.
Good friends let us gossip a little.
Tom Mott, (may your hearing never
grow worse, or your shadow less, old
fellow), what has become of him?
They tell me he is married, and the
father of many children. Do you
mind Tom when we went to Santa
Barbara to examine the coal mine
which we found to be worthless, but
found a pair of ponies to re-imburse
us, or you rather, for the outlay of the
trip? Ned Kewen Is still one of you.
I hear he got on Fort Aleut raz i! .ring
the war, and remained some time.
Well, that is over, and trust forgotten.
Sixteen or seventeen years ago we had
a memorable political campaign in
Los Angeles. The Brent and Downey
fractions of the party were at open
war. I ran for County Surveyor on
the Downey (plug-ugly) ticket, J
Kewen was on the Brent (rose-water)
ticket for District Attorney, against
Drawn. Two or throe of my friends
and I, made an excursion up the Ban
Gabriel river electioneering. Half
way up the cafion we stopped for the
night with a party of miners; who, as
it happened, were Irishmen. After
supper one of the persons with whom
I was traveling, commenced elect
ioneering for Kewen, and abusing
Drown. I took up the cudgel for my
side, and ended by reading one of
Ned's famous Know Nothing speeches.
I dont know whether I damaged him
much or not, but I always had an idea
that he did not appreciate my atten
tions. Let by-gone be by-gones, old
man, and let us cross palms without a
secret grudge.
h By the way, has Dad Frazee ever
gotten bai'k to Los Angelas? Two
years and « half ago he started for
Texas, and proaiised to write if he
had luck. He lavs never written.
Ridley tells me that Winston is as
natural aa the Bella Union itself, and
as good and as true as he is natural?
Where is old Joe Huber? I think
some one told me that Joe had been
running for County Clerk! Stop such
tolly, Joseph.
I bave forgotten Don Benito Wilson
until I »tn> alniosjt ashamed of mjteelf.

verts by the margin of the lake. Whftt
a great' hearted wholesouled man he
is, ami his politic* suit me exactly—
he i.s an independent States Rights'
man, who don't give a copper for par
ty or party machinery.
' And where is my friend Spencer H.
Wilson? 1 hope be is still alive, and,
if so, you will travel many miles to
find a better fellow.
The irrepressible Banning! 1 know
he still maintains full sway about New
town—you call it Wilmington now.
Do you remember those tierce wars of
ours, Banning? When you under
took to "crush out our patriotic oppo
sition, and place the yoke of monoply"
on the p-e-e-puls (thats the way Andy
Johnson pronounces it.) neck! Didn't
we go for you, and didn't you clean us
out, you monopolist! Many times as
I lay expecting a real enemy, did I
think of the time when we went down
and possessed ourselves of the Timm's
warehouse, and stole a watch on your
watchmen. But, plague you, you had
us out by legal process in a few hours.
Wasn't Brent hard to beat in a law
suit, especially when he had you for a
client, and we had old Reynolds for a
lawyer? Poor Tomlinson killed him
self suing the public. Has the public
built hint a monument? And just here'
loom up 'two of my best friends,
Frank Lecouvreur and Henry Schaef
fer. Since we parted I have seen many
"ups and downs," have heard the long
roll of musketry rattle, seen the brist
ling line go forward like a whirlwind,
have heard themuttcringsof those big
mouthed fellows who counterfeit
Jove's dread thunder, and I always
bore myself in a manner which would
have met the approval of the best sol
diers who ever marched under Prus
sia's banner. Uncle Henry gave me
a blessing and a gun, and Frank, stern
as Prussian discipline itself, regretted
that lie coul not stand with me. And
whilst my mind is with the Germans
don't let me forget John Schumacher.
How many children has Mrs. S. borne
to that solid good husband of hers?
Not less than two dozen, I dare swear.
And John Goller.is still making
wagons, and money too, I hope. I
think John is the craziest man in
America when he has about two gal
lons of beer too much under his belt.
Don Matteo Keller. Some one tried
to make me think more ill of him be
cause he had changed his politics. I
tlidn't do it. He stood to me on sev
eral occasions when 1 much needed a
friend, and I am the person to remem
ber it. If ever we meet, Don Matteo,
I'll shake your hand as heartily as ever
I did, and amuse you by the hour
with stories. Ah! and here is Don
Tomas Sanchez—Tom. Sanchez. We
never could understand four words of
each others language, but we knew
each others hearts. 1 heard from Rid
ley a couple days since. He is fuming
and "managing" the Mexican railroad,
has plenty of work and very good pay.
I think he pines for the companion
ship of Dr. Wilson Jones.
I must not omit a mention of Andy
Henderson. Andy, you know, was
born and raised just back of Pine
Bluff, in Arkansas, which he will
deny, and swear he was born in or
near Norfolk, Virginia; and pro
nounce the Virginia as though' it were
spelled with an F to convince you that
he is telling the truth. Don't believe
a word Andy says on that subject. He
is from Arkansas, and just back of
Pine Bluff. I'll back Andy to play
marbles against any man in Califor
nia; or, as you would express it, "the
Slope."
Dave McKenza, John Stonehouse,
and Bill Bower have all returned to
Los Angeles, and, I hear are all mar
ried! There is this about these three
fellows, friends and neighbors. If you
are looking for true men, plucky men,
and honest men I commend you to the
three I have named. I have camped
with those fellows from one end of the
Gila to the other in those "Corky"
times of '61, and know whereof I
afilrm. And Charley Ayers? I went
to see his father and brother in Rich
mond, immediately after arriving
there, twelve years ago. I have run
my personal reminiscences far enough,
this time. I see you are wrestling
with a gas question. lam Secretary
of the Memphis Gas Light Co., and
am well paid therefor, and know all
about gas. Don't Indulge in whole
sale abuse of your gas company. Its
stockholders and managers are no
more likely to cheat you as gas men,
than in any other capacity. Railers
against the Company only display ig
norance in too many instances. We
have 2,500 consumers and 500 public
lamps, and two stations, (upper and
lower works) hence you see I am likely
to be posted on the svbject. Coal costs
us $5 50 per ton of 2,000 pounds, and
we get $4 per month per each lamp—
following tne moon—which gives us
about 22 nights of lighting in the
month.
There is no reason wky ships and
cars cannot come together at San Pe
dro. What a pity your San Pedro road
is hroad-gauge. Too much money
thrown away in iron.
Some of my friends would probably
like to know what kind of a fellow 1
have grown to be. Very sedate. Am
a member of the Methodist Church,
and a strict business routinist, ruling
my part of the big corporation I am
attached to like a man-of-war. Don't
care a fig for politics. Will accept but
one office, and that is Congressman.
Next Spring, rf. v. I am coining out
to California to prospect a little. 1f at
that time I can see a piece of newspa
per property for sale which suits me, I
may stay \vith you, otherwise I shall
be under the necessity of coining
back here and going to Congress.
Before closing I have a little quarrel
with my Southern brethren about Los
Angeles. My brother-in-law, Bishop
Wightman, was down there a few
years since, and you paid no more at
tention to him than if he had been a
post! He is one of the most refined
gentlemen Carolina ever produced,
and one of the most learned and able
preachers in America, and yet you let
him come and go without special no
tice! Ridley complained also that
some of you gave him the cold shoul
der, as any intimacy would endanger
your future political chances. Well
we fellows who saw the stars and bars
In their zenith, and help to furl them,
can forgive small things. We ocenpy
a higher plane than those who are
ashamed of us.
George W. Gift.
P. S. I don't know but my letter
will be a failure, as I have left out the
greater number of my friends, who
will be sure to be offended. Please
don't. I am In a very forgiving
mood, and don't wish to offend.

Department or Languages. -
Oakland. July 11.1872. J
Herewith I certify that Miss Josephine Lind
ley has been a student In my department of
the University for Aye consecutive terms, vie:
from September, 1870, to April 3d, 1871 During
this time she studied the French, the Spanish
and the German languages, obtaining always
the highest murks for proficiency and attend
ance, her nverage credit mark for five terms
being 97 per cent.
On entering the University, Miss Lindley
possessed already such knowledge of the
French and Spanish Idioms as to be able to
speak them with ease, fluency, correctness,
and a pure pronunciation.
She may now be considered thoroughly fa
miliar with thetheory and philosophy, as well
as with the application of these two tongues;
nnd she may safely be recommended as a can
didate of great promise, for teaching the
French and Spanish languages.

by the Granges of this State. The points of
superiority arc: Lightness of draft, It being a

makes it turn in n space sufficient to accom
