The following opinions of the New York press, clipped from the copies of the 13th are of interest: No alternative but to topple their infamous and impotent provincial gov ernment into the sea and take posses sion in the name of outraged human ity. —[Evening Post. A prompt and thorough reprisal for the repeated acts of hostility- to our flag.—[Commercial Advertiser. We must defend our citizens in Cuba the same as in New York, even if war should be the result.—[Tele gram. That quick sense of injury and that prompt assertion of the national dig nity in former times at every infringe ment of our maritime rights was the best guarantee of the safety of citizens and property entitled to the protection of our national flag.—[World. We call the national honor a posses sion which, like the chastity of women, must be kept above the region of as sault, doubt or controversy.—[Even ing Mall. The shock of such wholesale slaughter we all feel, and the demand in tiie name of humanity is that it shall be stopped.—[Express. This ultimatum to the rebels at Fort Donaldson was the making of Gen. Grant. Something of this sort is needed to set him right on the Cuba question.—[Herald. Nothing left for the United States government but to declare war against Spain.—[Times. Th* most ample preparation must be exacted for this terrible outrage. -[Sun. We must in future protect our own flag and our own citizens in Cuban waters.—[Tri bu ne. The following genuine composition is by a seven year old in the public school of Truckee: The Truckee River—it Rises in Lake tahoe and Ends in Pyramid lake, there are considerable Wood Comes Down, there are snakes, fishes and Bull toads. Boys Can swim in Most Parts of it. Names of Boys Who swim: H. Harrison F. Freeman and A. Craae-. the Boys makes Flers and tells Rhimes, storys and Riddles, then the Boys group to Mr. goneses Pig Pen, and ride his Pigs, then go back to Swim, they Run out on a Big Rock and Dive, they then get in a line and swim aCross. some time the River is Low, and any Body Can Wade aCross it. Composition, James Joseph Sheridan. The Oleomargarine Company of San Francisco it ready to Work. It is ready to make butter out of animal fat by a very short and quick process. The Butter is said to be good. So com plete is the process that a fat dog can be worked into first class butter (by mill process) within a very small per centage of the assay value of the dog. A dog that has ten pounds of fat on him will yield something like nine pounds of good butter, when the weafiier is good. 'Phe company em ploy* experts, we suppose, to assay the animals which *re to be turned into butter. There is nothing like pro gress, unless it be honesty.—[Grass Valley Union. The Signal asserts that as a corn growing district, Santa Clara valley, Ventuw eouoty, is not surpassed by the best portions of Towa, Illinois or Missouri. Los Angeles Daily Herald. EASTERN TELEGRAMS. SPECIAL TO THE HERALD. NEW YORK. Nkw York, Nov. 2?.—The Grand Jury has found indictments against v number of inspectors of election forvi olation of election laws, and against other citizens whose proceedings on election day have been the subject of much comment. E. P. Biderman & Co. have institut ed su't against Daniel Drew, Eugene N. Robinson, and S. H. Allen, charg ing them with fraud nnd misrepre sentation in regard to large transac tions in certain stocks. It is alleged that Robinson was used by Drew to saddle stock on Biderman & Co., after Drew had agreed not to sell any of his stock, but would buy more. The dif ference in dispute amounts to $1,000, --000. r- A challenge has been issued by the Irish National Rifle Association'for a shooting match with representative Americans, to take place in the fall of 1874. The Association «cnt a team to Wimbledon, Which defeated the Eng lish and Scotch champions. Mrs. Moriarty anil a colored man quarrelled to-day over the payment lor a job of sawing wood, when the man drew a pistol and shot her dead. He then made his escape. The following bank statement has ben issued: Loan decrease, $666,900; specie increase, $938,300; legal tenders increase, $480,200; deposits increase, $6,122,400. A Washington special says an otti cial dispatch to Secretary Fish, re ceived at 12 o'clock last night, states that a second attempt was made to as sassinate Minister Sickles, and 1,000 troops are now on guard at Ihe Lega tion in Madrid. FOREIGN NEWS. London, Nov. 22.—Dispatches from Madrid agree in representing the in terviews between Minister Sickles and the Spanish authorities as of a storniv character. Sickles barely escaped mobbing by the crowd which gathered in front of his residence. In conse quence of these demonstrations he de termined to leave Madrid, but the Government having dispersed the mob, and since maintained peace, he resolved to remain. FIGHT IT OUT. The fair delusion ofthe Los Angeles Herald, that by dignity and courtesy it might escape those bloodless but terrible newspaper wars that are the delight of our live journals, has been rudely dispelled, and the Herald dis covers that it cannot have opinions, and express them, without running slap against the opinions of some other newspaper; that what it considers courtesy may not be so considered by somebody else; and that facts, as it looks at them, may appear like false hoods seen through other eyes, and "war is inevitable." By giving its opinions of the Fair, which we more than half suspect to be correct, it puts a personal affront upon the Star, which proceeds imme diately to resent it. The Herald says that the Fair was not a success, had done no credit to Los Angeles and its resources, and had degenerated into a series of races. The Star, which was "uncommonly interested" in the Fair, resents that account of it in a long editorial article of more than two col umns. We have not seen so much editorial wotjk on the Star for a long time, and we are glad to see it roused, and shan't be sorry if the Herald has to fight, like the rest of us.—[Stin ta Barbara Press. THE DIFFERENCE. Contrasting the two different codes of morals which "society" practically provides for men and women, Mary Clemmer Ames very sensibly observes: "The sister is taught, whatever her tempations may be, that she must be good; the brother is left to believe that however hard he tries, he cannot help being bad. It is expected of him that he will grow to be a respectable man, some day, but before that event, through the law of his nature, he must necessarily be very wicked. The sister is taught that she must preserve herself blameless for her future hus band to whose life she is to be the crown; the brother is left the same time in "sowing his wild oats." To his wife he is to bring no virginity of heart, no purity of person, no record of a staintless past. Many a man looks into the eyes of his wife, who trusts him as she does her God, into the faces of his daughters, who believe him to be scarcely lower than the angels, with a secret remorse which cannot be measured, as memory forces it upon his thought what he has been —perhaps what he is. With what shame he is conscious that if they knew his secret history, he would stand transformed before their eyes!" MERCHANT TAILORS. J.
