Why are you wandering here I pray ? An old man asked a maul one day. Looking for poppies so bright and red, Father, said she, I am hither led. Ele, He ! she heard him cry, Poppies, 'tis known by all who rove, Grow in the field, and not in tlie grove ! Tell mo, again tho old mnn said, Why are you loitering here, fair maid ? Tlie nightingales, so sweet and clear. Father, said she, I am come to hear. Fie, fie, she heard him cry, Nightingales, so all men say, Waible by night, and not by day. The sage looked grave, the maiden shy, When Lubln jumped over the style hard by; Tho sage looked graver, the maid more glum, Lubln, he twiddled his finger aud thumb, Fie, lie, was the' old man's cry, Poppies like these I own are rare, And of such nightingales' songs beware. What a Boy Knows About Girls. Girls are tlie most unaccountable things in the world—except a woman. Like a wicked flea, when you have them they ain't there. I can cipher clean over the improper fractions, and the teacher says I do it first-rate, but I can't cipher out a girl proper or im proper, und you can't either. The only rule in arithmetic that hits their case is the double rule of two. They are as full of tho old Nick as their skins can hold, and they would die if they couldn't torment somebody. When they try to be mean, they are as mean as pusley, though they ain't as mean as they let on; sometimes they are a good deal meaner. The only way to get along with a girl when she comes to you with her non sense is to give her tit for tat, and that will settle her, and when you get a girl settled she is as nice as a new pin. A girl can sow more wild oats in a day than a boy can sow in a year, but girls get their wild oats sowed aftera while, Which boys never do, and then they settle down as calm and placid as a mud-puddle. But I like girls first rate, and I guess all the boys do. I don't care how many tricks they play on me—and they don't care either. By and by they will get into the traces with somebody they like, and pull as steady as an old stage horse. That is the beauty of them. So let them wave, I say; they will pay for it some day, sewing on buttons and trying to make a decent man out of a fellow they have spliced on to, and ten chances to one if they don't get the worst of it. Cut This Out. Every person should understand how to treat a flesh wound, because one is liable to be placed in circum stances, away from surgical and veter inary aid, where he may save h a own life, the life of a friend or of a beast, simply by using a little com mon sense. In the first place close the lips of the wound with tlie hand, and hold them firmly together to check the flow of blood until several stitches can be taken and a bandage applied. Then bathe the wound for a longtime in cold water. "Should it be painful," a correspondent says, "take a panful of burning coals and sprinkle upon them common brown sugar, and hold the wounded part in the smoke. In a few moments the pain will be allayed and recovery pro ceeds rapidly. In my case a rusty nail.had made a bad wound in my foot. The'pain and nervous irritation were severe. This was all removed by hold ing it in smoke for fifteen minutes, and I was enabled to resume my read ing in comfort. We have often rec ommended it to others with like re sults. Last week one of my men had a finger-nail torn out by a pair of ice tongs. It became very painful, as was to have been expected. Held in sugar smoke for twenty minutes, the pain ceased, and promised speedy recov ery." Bible Facts. It is plain that each side expects a hand to hand struggle, and is preparing to put forth its powers. On Tuesday a serious accident hap pened to Gen. Merritt, an old oltiien of Marysville, by a wagon striking a post and knocking an awning down upon his head. Spawn for half a million trout have been sent down from Lake Tahoe to the fish farm of the Acclimatizing So ciety at San Tedro Point, in San Mateo county. The Nevada Supervisors have or dered the following elections under the Local Option law: Truckee, July 2d, and Grass Valley and Washington, July 6th. The Sacramento Zouaves will take part in the Fourth of July celebration at Marysville. Los Angeles Daily Herald. Recently In Lincoln, the capital city of Nebraska, Professor Anghey, tho chemist of the Nebraska University, analyzed a favorite brand of whisky, obtained at a high-toned saloon In that city, and found it to contain the following delectable components: oil of almonds, kerosene, potash, salts of lead and strychnine. A favorite brandy was found to embody: sulphu ric acid, turpentine, lime, strychnine, logwood and fusel oil. The suit of R. H.Fleming against Ous de Young, for $290 damages, was transferred to Millerton for trial, be fore Justice Rumble, on the 20th in stant. The fire at Dr. McMurtrey's barn at Marysville, on Sunday night, was the work of an Indian incendiary, who has been arrested. The barn of John Gardner, of Little Long Prairie, Humboldt county, was destroyed by fire on Thursday after noon last. The ship-carpenters of Vallejo are now talking of building a twelve hun dred ton ship on the principle of co operation. Vallejo intends celebrating the Fourth in a loyal and enthusiastic manner. On Monday a Stanislaus horse thief, named Anderson, was arrested in Sac lammto. Advertise Our County! Let people abroad know WHAT WB A HE, WHAT WE CAN BE. If you do not inform them, who will?
