CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER. THURSDAY JUNE 25, 1874. LOCAL BREVITIES. The Council meets to-day. G. W. Morgan has money to loan. * The Senator will sail for San Fran cisco Friday, June 2Gth. The Senator will sail for San Fran cisco on Friday, 23d inst. Passengers will take the train at 10 A. sr. Tbe Senator and the California ar rived at Sati Pedro yesterday. Their freight lists will be found elsewhere. The Orizaba is expected to arrive tliis morning, bringing 130 tons of freight ami 100 passengers. Passen gers for San Diego this steamer will leave l y the It) o'clock train this morning. A new stage route has been opened from Spaura to San Bernardino by H. W. Bobbins, it goes by way of the Chino Ranch, the Rincon, and the Santa Ana river, via Riverside, to San Bernardino. The pupils of Lawlor Institute will undergo a rigid and most searching school examination during to-day and to-morrow. Friends of the pupils and nil who are interested in education are most cordially invited to be present. W. H. Workman and William Prid ham were out yesterday canvassing for subscriptions in aid of the Louisiana sufferers. At four o'clock they had collected something over one hundred nnd fifty dollars in cash. This speaks well for the citizens of Los Angeles. From an advertisement nppearing this morning it will be seen that Car oline C. Burton has just returned from San Francisco, with a large assort ment of hair goods, which she offers for sa'e at the most reasonable terms at No. 0 Spring stne', opposite the Postoffice. Levia, the cx-niember of the Vas quez gang now held as a principal witness against those outlaws, was at tacked a few days since by a fellow prisoner confined in a cell with him. beaten over the head with a board and very nearly killed. The doctors think he will recover. Messrs. Kimball & Bancroft yester day negotiated the sale of Mr. Seliultz's property consisting of 17J acres on Pico street to Mr. H. D. Brownson, a gentleman recently from the East. A valuable consideration was given though the exact amount We are not at liberty to state. The Stockton Leader says: "Mrs. (Jove who has been in charge of the Western Union Telegraph office at Los Angeles lias resigned on account of ill health, and Miss M. E. Little formerly assistant in tlie oflice has charge of it. The statement is correct with the exception that it transpired in Santa Barbara instead of L»s An« goles. The ladies of the M. E. Church will give a public dinner at the skating rink on the Fourth. Delegations of ihe ladies are now canvassing the city for subscriptions for the purpose, and wetemeakfor them a fair degree of liberality from our citizens. If every good-natured man in town contributes half a dollar (and of course he will) the dinner will be a grand success. Tuttle & Lee, who have rented the large and well-furnished photograph gallery of Mr. V. Wolfensteln, are turning out' some of the finest photo graphs to be found in the country. Their work is finished in the highest ntyleof tbe art, and warranted to give satisfaction to every reasonable custo mer. All work promptly done and terms reasonable. * tf The Exprets baa an exhaustless source of sweetness in its office, which unfortunately it never makes use of. It says: "Between the ceiling and the roof of the building in which we write (Temple Block) there arc tons of honey. Bees have been living in our roof for eight years, and frequently, when tbe weather is very sultry, the pure honey percolates through the crevices of the ceiling. Whenever we require honoy, all we have to do is to bore a hole through the ceiling with a gimlet; and then go to a grocery store and buy some." La Esperanza, at No. 108 Main street, is one of the largest and best appointed stores in Southern Califor nia. A full line of groceries, imported direct from the East and Europe, to gether with a complete stock of pro visions, is kept constantly on hand nnd sold at bottom price*. Country produce bought, and the highest price allowed. This house is too well known to require any further commendation from us; we can only advise our friends to visit the store and see for themselves what excellent induce ments are offered to customers by way of fine goods and low prices. tf-5* The Los Angeles Iron Foundry is turning out an iron front for Mr. WhUhir's building, shortly to be .erected on Commercial street. Tliis firm recently cast the iron plates used on the steps throughout Temple's Block, and will soon finish another order of the same kind for Mr. Temple nnd also one for Mr. Langfranco. The foundry is doing aline business, which we are glad to see, as it rellects great credit upon our home enterprise. We trust that our* citizens will see it to their interest to patronize and encour- Mpa this branch of manufactory in our city, instead of sending to San Fran cisco to nave their work done at an equal or greater expense. We tiandate the following local items from La Cronica of yesterday: Qvi frienc's the Hon. A. O. Escan doh, Member of the Assembly, J. 11. Btone, Sheriff of Ventura county, and N. M. Jones, Esq., all of Ventura, made a Hying visit to Los Angeles and left before we had a chance to shako their honest hands. Dr. Fernandez, who lately arrived from San Diego to practice his pro fession among us, left on the last steamer for San Francisco, from whence he will return in a few days. We yesterday had the pleasure of being introduced to Dr. Weils, late Surgeon of Mare Island. He has re- Hh'iied ills position there and Mill form one of the honored fraternity of Los Angelo*. H» professes to be en chanted with oui clliuate and brilliant future. , _ „ . Day before yesterday Dr. Howard delivered the necessary lumber for the construction of the building destined to be used as a tobacco warehouse. The tobacco will begin to be harvested on the 10th of July. Samples can be seen at Dr. Howard's drug store, Mam street. With the greatest sorrow we an nounce the dangerous illness ot Don Manuel Requena, one of Los Angeles best citizens. . . Our County Assessor, Don Di01)1810 Botiller, who was lately indisposed has once more recovered his usual good health. Oil Refining by the New Process. Quite a company of citizens ..ssem bled at the store-room on the corner of Arcadia and Los Angeles streets yes terday afternoon to witness tho new kerosene-oil refining process of Mr. Carreras, now used by the San Fer nando Oil Works. The apparatus con sists of three Rugsia-iron tanks or fil ters mounted on a frame work, and ar ranged one above the other so that the fluid can be drawn from the upper into the second, and from that info the lower by means of faucets. The upper tank is used merely for a re ceiver into which the crude petroleum is poured, and impregnated with cer tain chemicals; the second has a series of five strainers through which the fluid is filtered and purified, re ceiving the action of various chemi cals with each. The lower tank has a coil of pipe running through it im mersed in water chemically charged so as to cool the clarified oil as if passes through and dispel any gases that may have been generated. The whole apparatus is very simple and easily operated. The crude petroleum used'was just as it came from the ground, about the consistency of cream and black as tar. This Mas placed in the receiving tank, and in about twenty minutes, was drawn from the lower one clear and limpid kerosene. Specimens of the refined fluid were filled into small bottles and passed around in tho crowd of specta tors for inspection, where the tests of smell and sight were pretty thor oughly applied to it. In every case it was pronounced "Kerosene, sure enough," and doubtless, as claimed for it, the very best in the market. After wards some other bottles were passed around which the gentlemen inspect ed by tasting, and'called it first-rate, too. The latter specimens were not of kerosene, however. Without doubt, this new refining process is one of the greatest inven tions of the day. It is proving in every respect what was promised for it, doing its work rapidly, thoroughly and with small trouble and expense. The total cost of refining by this pro cess is about two cents per gallon, whereas by the usual course of evap oration the expense is fully five cents. Besides the enormous expense for erecting machinery in the old method is obviated, as well as all danger of explosion through the heating and the necessary close proximity of fire. By this means about eighty per cent, of the petroleum is utilized, being double that utilized in the old way. Besides the kerosene there is secured a lubri cating oil, which is said to be of tho finest quality. Great credit is due Mr. Carreras for bringing out this really wonderful invention, and we doubt not that he will reap his full measure of pecuntary reward from it when it shall be fairly brought before the world. In the evening, the Refining Com pany gave a tine supper to their friends, inviting them to a table loaded down witli the richest viands of the season. Everything passed off in a most enjoyable manner, and the day was declared a SUCCeSS in all re sist*. Resolutions ol Respect. Hale ofLkxinoton Lodge, ) No. 104, P. & A. M., . Er, Monte, May 81, A. D. 1871. J To Ihe Master Warden and Brethren: We,thecommltte, appointed to draft resolutions of respect to the memory of our deceased brother, William Long Jones, a member of Lexington Lodge, No. 104, F. & A. Resolved, That the Secretary be in structed to forward a copy of these resolutions to the Los Angeles HER ALD and Star for publication, and that these resolutions be spread upen the minutes in full. If. C. Parrish, ) Thos. McLain, vCom. J. H. Gray. j Louisiana offerers Editor Hf.hald: The gentlemen who have generously acted as a com mittee fer the purpose of raising funds for the benefit of the Louisiana suller ers, report that those whom they have solicited have almost universally stated that while they had donated to theFourthof July celebration, had they thought of the Louisiana sufferers, they would have reserved their funds entirely for that purpose; for while their brothers were starving no greater glery and pleasure could be derived than by devoting those funds which were raised for the celebration of the Fourth of July to the saving of life, in one section of our own country, rather than fleeting pleasures in an other. We ask, then, the Committee of the Fourth of July to call at once a meeting, and invite with open doors all of our citizens, especially those who have contributed to both funds, to take part in the meeting and ex press their wishes as to the disposition of the moneys raised. Vermont. Los Angeles, June 24th. ' • A New Variety of Wheat." Editor Herald:—l observe men tion in your paper, of to-day, of "A New Variety of Wheat." It is no new variety. In 1854, on my ranch a few miles north of Oakland, I culti vated 20 acres of t his " New Variety." It was then known as Salt Lake Club Wheat—lhe stalk woody, as you say, and about as easy to cut, handle and thresh, as a crop of steel wire. The heads are double and sometimes treble —giving tine promise of abundant yield—only to disappoint the hopes of the farmer, the grain being small and flinty ami yielding a black gritty Dour, only fit for making ginger snaps, or feeding to the pigs. A correspondent of La Croniea, who has been on a Hying trip up the coast, thus writes to Ids paper from San Francisco in regard to the Local Option law and the Central Pacific Railroad Company. He says: " Nothing occu pies the attention of the resident* of this part of the State more than the Local Option law. As for me, 1 think such a law is absurd and anti-consti tutional. It will not restrain those who can afford it from buying and consuming live gallons of liquor, and it will simply be an injustice to the poor who may need some and yet can not obtain it unless in large quantities. I had occasion to notice some passen gers who arrived by the Central Pa cific Road from the Eastern states. One, a friend of mine, said he went into the emigrant's department during the trip, and a revolting spectacle nut his view. Even tbe filthy and crowded condition of the Steerage on the Pan ama steamers in former times was nothing compared to the misery ami hardships endured by these pooremi grant- in i heir transit to our hospita ble shores."
