LETTER FROM COMPTON. "Lf»rr»l Option— A romoeraiice commu nity- Binaltasviloii of faxes—A Bat* ter Time r Editor Herald:—Since my last everything has been unusually quiet in our little village. Farmers are all busy at work on their firms of week days and all go to church on Sunday an 1 listen to a. "quiet little sermon," and then return home to "doze" away the afternoon, so you see we really need some excitement, and we are glad it is looming In tlie form of a LOCAL OPTION election*. Hut we are "cool and calm" about it, not fearing the result in our town ship; there has been no great demon strations in the way of mass.meetings, processions, etc. We believe that ac tions speak louder than words, and we intend to speak on election day in an effectual manner. We are truly glad that we are not bound by the action of your Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Ed itor, I was up to your city the other day, and met several DISGUSTED GRANGERS. They had been before the Board of Equalization, thinking to secure an equitable assessment of property, ns between large land owners and small farmers, but sir, it was "no go," the thing "could"nt be did." There are certain men in this world who have a great influence over cer tain other men, but 'tis said thai there is a time when patience ceases to be a virtue. I fear that time lias almost arrived, so look out, gentlemen, look out, for the DAY OF RECKONING Will surely come, and when it does you had better "stand from under." I was very sorry that a prominent member of the Board was not present, and other members of the Board were too weak to be of any use when there. But we are not going to give up yet, no sir—we intend to "fight it j out on this line if it takes seven years." There is rro justice in tlie present assessmeutof this county; the small farmers are paying double their proportion of taxes if properly assessed, and we don't propose to submit to such treatment any longer. IN CONCLUSION I wish to say to all Grangers, farmers and laboring men generally, bear these things in mind and don't forget them when election day comes round; a smile, a bow, or a shake of the hand will not be sufficient atonement for these wrongs. More anon, Granger. Compton, July 27th, 1874. Carter's Excursion. We clip the following notice from the Lowell (Mass.), Vox ropuli. It will be read with interest, as it refers to a well-known citizen and his suc cess in a praiseworthy undertaking: N. C. Carter, formerly of this city, but now a resident of Los Angeles, California, is getting up quite a repu tation as a California excursionist. About three weeks ago he came on with a party of fifty-four passengers, making the trip in eleven days, stop ping one day and a half at Salt Lake City and a half day at Cheyenne. By rilling cars only half full good accom modations for sleeping are secured, and from conversation with some of the party, we infer that all were pleased with Carter's management of the trip. At Salt Lake City he took his party into the presence of Brig ham Young, and gave each one an in troduction; and arriving in "tlie States," he would have given them an qpportunity to view the Falls of Niagara had not a rain-storm inter posed to prevent. Nearly all who came on with him intend to return when he goes back. Mr. Carter is arranging to start about the 20th of August, on the re turn trip. There will be, during the whole distance, but three changes of cars; the price of tickets will be but $66, and as there has already been a reduction of fare by the railroad som panies, he hopes to able to offer his tickets at a still lower riirii res. He is constantly receiving letters from dif ferent parts of the country making in quiries respecting his return trip. Parties in Baltimore, East Tennessee and Wisconsin have already secured passage. Having cars exclusively their own, and also the advantage of a good company, rentiers this long journey much to be desired over the usual method, without considering the difl'erenee in the price of tickets. Mr. Carter has been over the road no less than six times, and hecerlainly ought to know the way, if any one does. His arrangements for the contem plated trip are not yet fully com pleted, but he will be able to give all desirable information to anyone wish ing to visit California. Work on the main canal of tho Fresno and King River Canal and li gation Company is being rapidly pushed ahead- Los Angeles Daily Herald. Wallapai District. Mr, T. J. Bedford kindly furnishes tia the following Interesting points, taken from a private letter dated Cer j bat, Wallnpni DM riot, A. T., July 20th: ■ » » This new town U Just below flic gorge of the c&fion, is perfectly Hat, : an abundance of water is obtained by ! sinking for il, nnd in fact it Is tbe I only natural town site in tbe vicinity |of our rich and valuable mines. Col. David Buel will soon have hisfurnnce running. His men are kept working every day in tlie week, Sundays not excepted. All our mines are encour aging and is decidedly one of the best out-looks for tbe speculator, business man or miner that there is on tbe coast. New discoveries and rich ones ! are being made every day. In fact, it j is wonderful what the energy and per ' severance of such a man as Col. Buel can stimulate all tbe latent forces of our hardy population to do. There are no Idle men In tbe district; the sharp click of the drill and the boom of untold blasts are the cheerful fore warning of future prosperity. So mote it lie. In this district alone tbere are 1,100 local ions, and Mr. PletZ, our compe tent assay er, states that tbe average of tbe assays arc larger thiol that of I any other mining camp on the coast, ■ Consequently you will see that I feel joyful.
