Baltimore, Sept. 7.—Saturday af ternoon, the greater portion of the business section of Fortsburg, Aile ghaney county, Md., was burned. Loss, $145,000; insurance, $72,000. New Haven, Sept. 7.—The build ings of the New Haven Wheel Manu facturing Company, one of the most extensive industries of the city, were burned to-night. Loss is estimated at $350,000 to $500,000, insurance $100,000, The fire is still burning, but will probably be confined to these build ings. Alabama, Sept. 7.—Tlie freight houses of the Boston and Alabama Railway, in East Alabama, were burned to-night. Loss, $50,000. Tbe Minnesota Auditor In Trouble. St. Paitl, Sept. 7.—Gov. Davis has written an official letter to the Attor ney-General of that State, requesting him to bring suit at the earliest pos sible moment against Chas. Mellrath, late Auditor, and his sureties. Washing-ton Matters. Washington, Sept. 7.—-Secretary Bristow has approved of the recom mendation of Solicitor Wilson with regard to the Secret Service Division of the Treasury, and directs that steps be taken at once for the re-organiza tion of that branch of the service, and that all papers and evidence in regard to the service in the hands of the So licitor be turned over to the Attorney- General. Col. Whiteley has tendered his resignation as Chief of that Bu reau, which was accepted, but his suc cessor has not yet been announced. Plymouth Church and Mrs. Tiiton. New Yoke, Sept. 7. —The members of Plymouth Church are contributing v fund for the relief of Mrs. Tiiton, and already $1,700 have been collected. Paymaster Hprague Relieved. Weshington, Sept. B.—Paymaster C. J. Sprague is relieved from duty in the Department of Arizona, and or dered to report to the Commanding- Gene'al ofthe Department of Califor nia for assignment to duty as Chief Paymaster of that Department. Beecher and Tiiton. New York, Sept. B.—The answer of Beecher to the complaint of Tiiton was received to-day by Beecher's attorneys and was at once served on the plain tiff, together with notice of trial for the term of Court beginning on the third Monday in September. The de fendant answers to the complaint that the first and each aud every allegation in said complaint, except that plain tiff and Miss Elizabeth Richards were married October 2, 1855, and lived to gether as husband and wife up to 1874, is utterly false; second, that defend ant had never, at any time or place, unchaste or improper relations with the wife of plaintiff, and never at tempted or sought to have any such relations. London, Sept. 7.—The work of lay ing a new direct cable from the Irish cable to the American coast has be gun, and a dispatch from tlie steamer Farraday, dated the Oth, says they are in latitude 50 degrees 51 minutes, lon gitude 17 degrees 34 minutes, and that the insulation is perfect, everything working satisfactorily. One of the Fertilities. London, Sept. 7.—Charles Perkins, formerly United States Consul at Lis bon, and wife, were before the Correc tional Tribunal of the Seine Saturday, on the charge of obtaining 39,000 francs under false pretences. It is charged that Perkins obtained the money by alleging that he had a com mission for a cable between Spain and England, and that he was negotiating a loan for Don Carlos, and was engaged in other moneyed transactions. Judg ment will be given to-morrow. A Terrible Fire, Berlin, Sept. 7.—A fire at Meinin gen destroyed half of tbe place. The loss on buildings alone is three mil lion thaler*. Upwards of 700 families are made homeless. There is great distress. French Affair*. Paris, Sept. 7.— L' Univeru has been suspended for two months for publish ing an article against President Ser rano. Jules Simon, iv a speech at Kheiras to-day, urged the dissolution of the Assembly. Plague ou tbe Bed Sea. Lisbon, Sept. 7.—The Portugese Los Angeles Daily Herald. Minister of the Interior has issued no tice that Arabian ports on the Red Sea are infected with tho plague. SAN FRANCISCO. Major Nelson Onlered to Arizona The License Collectos lv Trouble— Death of D. W, Perley-Falra. San Francisco, Sept. 8. —Major J. H. Nelson, who is at present in tbe city with his wife, has been ordered to report to the Commanding General of the Arizona Department, for assign ment to duty as Chief Paymaster of that Department. Major Nelson ar rived from Arizona only recently. During the present month the Con solidated Virginia Mining Company has shipped over half a million dollars, and the usual dividend will be paid. The twenty-two China women, brought before the Supreme Court on a writ of habeas corpus, have been re manded to* the Master of the steamer Japan, and will be sent hack to China. The report that the running race at the Bay District Fair, yesterday, was given to Osceola, was incorrect. In the last heat he was shut out by Nell Flaherty, but the judges decided that the horse was distanced by the foul riding of her jockey. The race and money were awarded to Nell Flaherty. The Board of Supervisors last night declared the office of License Collector vacant. The Mayor and other heads of the Department take possession of the office. Buckley and two of his deputies, Hellinget and Niemeyer, were arrested for embezzlement of public funds and released on bail. D. W. Perley, a well known lawyer of this city and Nevada, died last night, at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, after a lingering illness. At the Bay District Fair to-day, there will be a running race between four-year-olds, mile heats, best three in five, for a purse of $750, followed by a pacing race for $800. The attend ance promises to be fully as large as yesterday. The weather is very clear and pleas ant. The Mayor, Auditor and Treasurer took possession of the License Collest or's office to-day. No appointment has been made as yet. There are hosts of applicants, tempted probably in view of recent developments. The case of Bnckley, ex-License Collector and his two' deputies was called in the Policce Court to-day, and on motion of their attorney D. J. Mur phy, continued to next Friday. Mayor Alvord states that several days must elapse before any new ap pointment can be made, and that when it is made, tho office will be opened with an entire new set of books aud deputies. Mr. Buckley is engaged to-day closing his books, as nearly as they can be closed under the circum stances. UTAH. Ann Eliza's Olvorcc Suit A Small Mormon Excitement, Salt Lake, Sept. 7.—The United States District Court met to-day. Ann Eliza Young's suit for divorce and ali mony comes up on Thursday. Considerable excitement at Tooele to-day is reported. A demand was made of the late Probate Judge for the records of his Court, which was re fused. The County Court is in session there, and the U. S. Marshal is there with his deputies, and a large number of armed Mormons had gathered. A fight was anticipated, but no collision occurred. The Bazaar Is now giving 12 yards Best American Prints for SI. Also, six yards 4-4 French and American prints for If. At the corner of Main and Requena streets, oppo site the U. S. Hotel. * Everybody is wondering why the Baza au Is selllngthelr goods so cheap.
