One day last week a very fat woman "going ou fifty years old," toiled up the four pair of stairs of a Detroit newspaper office, rested her breath for awhile, and then wanted tn see "the bead reporter.'! " I'm all alone in this world," sbe commenced, as she sat down and pulled out her handkerchief. "A widow, eh?" queried tbe re porter. " Yes; a poor, striving widow, whose husband has been dead these fourteen years." " Death is a sad thing, madam; it crushes hopes, severs ties and breaks hearts." "He was such a good man," she sobbed, covering her face with her handkerchief; " and such a good pro vider. We alien had meat and 'taters, and wood and preserves; and, do you know, he never gave me an unkind word." "He must have been au excellent man." "He was—he was. He'd get up nights and cover up the children and shake the stove, and if his meals was not ready, or he found buttons off bis shirt, he'd never open bis head." "And your grief is yet strong; your sorrow just, as deep ?" "Just the same as the day he lay dyln', and took my hand and whis pered, ' Cortihia, don't take on so.' Yes, I'm grieving just tbe same, or I wouldn't care what folks said. That's what's brought me up here—folks are talkin' about me." "They are, eh ?" "Yes, they are. They've said that I was after a widower; that I was kee|i ing up correspondence with an under taker, and that I wasdead in love with a dozen men!'' "And this is not true?" "True!—young man, look at me! Great heavens! Do T look like one who wanted to get married ?" " Well, no." "How could I many again!" she exclaimed. " How could 1 forget that dear form beneath the sod, and smile on another man! Marry! Great stars! young man—but how could they start such stories?" "And you want them denied?" "That's it. Here's ten cents; and I want you to come out in a piece so long and say that I'll prosecute these vile slanderers if those stories don't cease. Put it in red tye, mister —iv red type, and big letters, at that. A Detroit widder can't escape the slan derers, no mutter how well she be haves. I marry again—think of it, young man!" "But willows often do re-marry." "Alas! they do, young man. Sum how it seems lonesome to be a widow, and have no one to defend you, and be alone; but—but—but I couldn't think of taktn' another husband—not unless he was rich!" And she wiped her eyes again and felt her way down stairs. A Tough Horse Yarn. VV r e jesterdav overboard Pap J'ryor telling bis Be ice Kate tbe following; "boss yarn:" "You never was in Honey Lake, Kate." saitl Pap. "No, uncle, you know I have never been out of this town, since I arrived here from iSt. Lotiis." "True enough. You ought to go to Honey Lake, Kate; you'd see a line primitive people. Things up thar are much the same as hack yander in Missouri, iv places. You know that black boss of mine— old Sam?" "Yes uncle." "Black as a coal, uin't it?" "Yes, uncle." Not a white hair on it?" "1 believe not, uncle." "Wall, tbe last time I was up at Honey Lake I rid him, and I seed tiiat boss turn as white as snow in less than un hour." "Indeed, uncle. HojV Was.it?" "Wall, I stopped at a sort of tavern up thar, anil put obi Sam in tbe stable. It was a rousin' great log stable, and I turned him loose in thar all by himself. Thar was in that stable a feed trough dug out of a log.anil about thirty feet long. Before leaving tlie stable I th rowed an ear of corn intbe trough to old Bain in order that be might nibble at it till it was time for him to get his regular feed. About, an hour afterward I came back and didn't know my own boss. He was as white as a sheep all over." "His bait bad turned white in that time?" "No, be was all in v foam of sweat with chasing that ear of corn. It was a very bard one, and when be would try to bite it at one end of tbe trough it would slip from between his teeth and fly to tlie other end, aud in this way he worked himself up in a perfect fury and foam trying to get tbat ear of corn." "Is this a true story, uncle?" "Yes, Kate; why?" "Well, it has no other merit," MISCELLANEOUS. J. K. tIODfKKY.
