ETC ap2B-tf—s An Encouraging Omen. Every friend of educsilon must be gratified to observe the prominence that is given to good schools by tbose who are seeking toattraet Immigrants to their particular localities. The taompoocolony made unusually liberal provision for establishing and main taining schools, and this act did much to insure the success of ihe enterprise, The Ceatinela colony will be richly compensated for making the same recognition of the necessity of well supported schools for the successful establishment of a prosperous com munity. And now comes Artesia, the latest candidate for the suffrages of the incoming tide of Immigrants, and pre sents as the strongest proof of the en terprise and intelligence of the propri etors, the very liberal donations that will he made for the erection of school houses and the support of schools. If a man has a farm for sale he can offer no better inducement to pur chasers than to announce that there Is a good school-house in close proximity. Lately in one number of a paper pub lished in Solano county, six farms were offered for sale, In the description ttt each of which it was stated that there was a school within convenient dis tance. We repeat, these are encouraging signs which indicate the ihoreased importance attached to education. No man wishes to locate in a community which does not present these evidences of enlightened public sentiment. Teachers' Examination. The quarterly teachers' examination will begin on Wednesday, the oiith of March, and continue four days. Ac cording to a regulation adopted at the last meeting of the State Board oi Ed ucation, the candidates will be exam ined first in written arithmetic, or thography and grammar. Any one who fails to obtain at least fifty per cent, in eacli of these branches will be requested to withdraw, and no one can receive a certificate above a third grade who does not obtain more than sixty per cent, upon each. As gentle men are not entitled to third grade certificates, all will be ruled out of (he exomJuaUoM who fail to receive sixty per cent, in each of tlie studies named. Under the operation of the new rule, many who have been accustomed to compensate for deficiencies in these fundamental branches by high per centages in other branches of less im portance, will fail. We shall look with unusual interest to the results of out next examination. Hints on Sweet Potatoes. | Rural Southerner.] I will mention some experiments Which] made to MSI. I commenced in August. On beittj- out alter digging' them, they would turn the whitest about the first quarter of the moon, or soon after, and the darkest about the time of the last quarter. Those dug for seed the last meiiliond time till rotted, while the former saved well. They were put 18to a house, and were sepa rated by a partition of straw. These experiments were made at the request Of Mr. <J., mentioned 111 my former article; hut whether it was the moon or not which made the difference, I will leave for others to experiment still further and to decide. My own has been that the moon does not exert any Influence over vegetation. If not, it may still serve as a guide to the time when it is best to dig the potato. From my own experiments and obser vations, as well as from what 1 can learn by Inquires from others, I think that any one, on making proper trial, will become convinced that tbe potato, to keep well, must be dug whe" it has very little sap in it; that, when it is cut, the surface must heal over white and dry. At such times, also it will be found much more palatable. The Spanish, especially when dug in full sap, will often, turn dark on being cooked, when brought immediately from the patch, and besides it wiil taste more or less bitter. — - — -•>•%-—— — - The obituary poet has broken out in a new snot. This time it is a Missis sippi doctor who laments a "Lost One," presumably a patient of his, in this lugubrious strain: Speak lowljr, tread lightly, for Ibe loved one is d.\ ing; She is crossing the river IJial bars us from God,: Weep fondly—'bUf, then, the 14 Is no use in crying, She's but traveling the put Ii ihat her Saviour had trod.
