Elegant DINNERS AND LUNCHES at a moment's notice. .1 as. MUNROE A CO., no2-tf—B j Proprietors. "Ten Little Injuns." The Virginia City, Nevada Enter prise tells it this way: "Almost any day about the time of changing shifts, whole flocks of Piute boys, from six to ten years old, are to be seen collected about the Consolidated Virginia works. They are on hand to gobble up the contents of the dinner pails of the miners who are coming out of the shaft. Almost every dinner pail con tains something, and many come out with their contents almost intact. As the miners, to the number of hundreds pass away from the works they empty their dinner pails upou some conve nient plank, and the "little Injuns" sail in. It is a curious fact that these little redskins are equally as improvi dent as their elders. They take no thought for the morrow, or even for the next hour. When they have stuffed themselves till they cannot hold another mouthful, they seem to consider themselves fixed for life. At such times they can be seen pelting each other with the choicest of .food. One ragged little thief, the seat of whose trowsers drags the ground, will fire away at an equally ragged com panion with a slice of delicious ham as large as both of his hands. The "little Injun" thus assaulted returns the fire witii a ckunk of pound cake, while he himself is made the target for mince pie, blackberry tarts, cheese, bread and butter, sausage, hard boiled eggs and all manner of first-class pro visions. - As they dodge about the timber piles a brisk fire is kept up in all direct ions, the missiles being such articles as we have described. Not even one "little Injun" thinks of fill ing his pockets with food and carrying it home to his hungry little sister or bleer-eyed, decrepit old grandma, shivering in the sagebrush hut among the neighboring bull—not one "little Injun" has the least idea that he will ever again be hungry. Murderers and Philanthropists. At the present moment, the London Saturday Review argues, it may cer tainly be doubtful whether in this country capital punishment is so pow erful a deterrent as it should be, and the reason is simply that the chances are all in favor of the murderer. To say nothing of the stupidity of the police, there are mad doctors, maudlin journalists, weak judges, sentimental juries, and imbecile Home Secretaries. The murder may be as clear as any thing can be, but all sorts of excuses are suggested. The poor fellow was mad—indeed, the mere fact that he killed anyone is a proof of madness— or he was provoked. A man has a bad wife; she is shrill, drunken, unchaste! Her husband cracks her skull, as the best way of silencing her. Should the poor man be hanged for that? Cer tainly not, we should say, if you are of opinion that wives should be put to death without trial, at the discretion of their husbands, for biid temper and looseness of conduct. This week there has been a case of this kind In which tho murderer has been spared, and the result no doubt will he that a good many other wretched women will be put to death for offences which, how ever aggravating, have not hitherto been supposed to require such disci pline. The odd part of the matter is that it is the very people who pride themselves on their tender-hearted ness and anxiety to save life, who are the chief agents in encouraging mur ders by advocating the principle that murder may be committed with im punity. If a man cannot get on with his wife he can leave her; it is a cu rious development of humanity that he should be authorized to kill her. Man Killed While Attempting to Kiss his Wife. The Manchester, England, Coroner held an inquest last week on the body of Benjamin Brown, aged forty years, a confectioner. On Wednesday, Jan uary 13th, about 12 o'clock at night, the deceased went home under the in fluence of liquor. His wife and daughter were in tbe kitchen cutting up some meat, the daughter was sharpening a carving-knife ou a steel. The deceased wanted to kiss his wife, and in trying to do so he staggered and fell with his back against the knife which his daughter was sharp ening. The knife penetrated the buck of his chest, entering his lungs, and caused his death. Martha Bradley, a married daughter of deceased, said that the deceased had been teetotal for three months until Sunday week, when he got drunk, and had been drinking heavily since. Deceased fell against the knife quite accident ally. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. New Hampshire Still in Doubt. Concord, N. H., March 11th.—Com plete returns of the election are not yet received. The Republicans still claim a majority of eleven in the House, and say it cannot be reduced below nine. The Democrats have a majority in the Council. LOUIS EMERY PAGE. FELIX KPHRAM GRAVEL. PAGE & GRAVEL, Manufacturers of Carriages and Wagons (JEM - Ofall kinds, made of the best ma- terlal.
