Disease Among the Indians.
The Reese River Reveille of the sth
instant, contains the annexed: " A
disease of the eye has broken out
among the Indians, which appears to
be contagious and threatens to destroy
the sight of the whole tribe. We do
not know the causes of the disease, but
believe it to be superinduced by the
smoke and dirt in which they live.
We do not know that it is the duty of
the Indian Agent to attend to this
matter, but it ought to be. The Piutes
and Sboshones of this section do not
trouble him much, as a general thing,
but on behalf of the poor, suffering
creatures, we call on him to do some
thing in their behalf. The malady ie
spreading and men, women and chil
dren are affected by it; and the poor
wretches, not knowing any means of
relief, are rapidly becoming blind.
It was in Paris. Au elegant lady
goes out shopping. While she is en
gaged there is a heavy fall of rain.
The streets are flooded, and, to add to
her distress her carriage stands on the
far side of a large, open square which
has become a lake. She signals to the
driver, but his horses being young,
will not face the water. She stands
on the edge of the curb, stamping her
little feet and not knowiug what to
do. A gentleman passes and takes in
the situation at. a glance, Throwing
his cigar aside he steps up to the lady,
seizes her by the waist, delicately
plunges i tiio the tide and lands her
safely on the lower step of her car
riage door. Recovering from her as
tonishment she turns around and mut
ters: "Insolent" The gentleman los
es no time, but steps back to the lady
seizes her by the waist delicately,
plunges into the tide and lands her
where she stood before. He then takes
off his hat, bows politely and walks
away.
