It Is 9ald that Ventura county will ship more boga this year than before. Tho first County Teachers' Institute of Ventura county will be held in June, commencing the 9th and con tinuing four days. On Sunday night a barn, two miles beyond the city limits of San Jose, belonging to W. Hamilton, was de stroyed by fire. Damage $3,000; no insurance. A ledge of quartz is reported by tbe Yreka Union as having been discover ed lately on Methodist creek, on the South fork of the Salmon river in Siskiyou county. The Town Council of San Buena ventura has granted a gas franchise to several leading citizens. It' provides that works shall be erected within eighteen months. San Buenaventura is to have a fire department. A company has been incorporated, but not organized, and uniforms, hose, etc., to tbe value of $000 have been sent for. The body of C. L. Mendleson, mer chant of Princeton, Colusa county, for which a reward of $500 was ottered, was recovered from the Sacramento river on Sunday morning, the 23d in stant. The Sacramento Valley Agriculturist says: "The scarlet fever, in a very dangerous form, is prevailing In Sac ramento and vicinity, and has proved fatal in a number of cases. In some families two and three children have died." The Stockton Herald announces that Secretary of Stale, Drury Melone, has been paying Stockton a brief visit to look after tbe Republican primaries soon to take place there, as Mr. Malone aspires to renomination at the hands of his party. Sunday evening, as the train for Woodland and Knight's Landing was about a half a mile South of the form er place, a stone was thrown through one of the windows, and struck Ben. I'eat t, a former resident of Sacramento, on the forehead, Inflicting a severe cut. There were flled Saturday, in the of fice of the Secretary of State, articles of i ncorporation of the Stockton Build ing and Loan Association. Capital, $600,000, in shares of $200 each. Also, articles of incorporation of the New Eliza Mining Company, to operate in Siskiyou county. Capital, $55,000, in shares of $25. The principal place of business will be in Yreka. On Monday morning the residence of Sutherland D. Glidden, at Chap manvllle, took fire, and before assist ance could arrive, the building was too far gone to be saved. Tbe inmates only had time to save themselves. The origin of the fire is unknown, there having been no fire in the house after 4P. M. Sunday. Loss, $2,200; insur ed in the Hartford Insurance Com pany for $1,000. John D. Moore was arrested at Stockton on Saturday, on a charge of assault with intent to murder his wife. The bullet grazed the body of the woman and struck her little daughter, about four years old, In the arm, in flicting apainfnl flesh wound. Moore claims that the shot was accidental. One of tbe Mexican bandits, supposed to be one Glerro, who has committed many outrages in Southern California, was shot last week at Prewett's Sta tion, Chimney Meadows. Upon him was found Bart McGee's watch, a memorandum book containing the names of a number of persons, McGee's among the rest, whom they had rob ped and tied up, three revolvers and a sixteen-shooter. Apropos of the recent death of John Harper, senior member of the firm of Harper Brothers, a singular story is told that one day, a short time ago, Mr. Harper returned from a drive and going into his parlor seated himself before his own portrait and gazed at it long and earnestly. "Well, old John Harper," said be at length, "your time has almost come!" A day or two afterward he was taken sick and he never left his bed again. A Tennessee paper tells a story about a little red bird which lately lost its mate. Happening to alight, a few mornings afterward, on a vine in front of a highly polished window, hecaugbt sight of his own reflection, and, evi dently mistaking it for his missing companion, began to make love to it, bird fashion, and has continued tbe practice ever since.
