Joseph Phy, jailor of Pima county, arrived here by stage from Tucson last Thursday, having in charge William Hall, sentenced for life for murder. Hall is one of the four convicts who escaped from the Pima county jail some time ago and made their way into Sonora. Wm. M. Hughes, Esq., the celebra ted inventor of the machines for dress ing hemp, ramie and flax arrived here by the San Diego stage last Wednes day morning. Two of these machines are now at the colony at Lerdo, and Mr. Hughes will go down there and instruct the people how to use them. Messrs. L. A. Smith and John Mar kle cume in a few days since from Salt Spring, on the Tucson road, where Wolfskill & McGeary stopped to shear their live thousand sheep that they recently drove out from California, and informed us that the job of shearing is completed and the yield of wool very large. They say that the fleece of some of the high grade sheep weighed over seventeen pounds to the sheep, and that the average of tbe whole flock, lambs and all, will be at least six pounds. This wool is now being hauled into Yuma and will be shipped to San Francisco. Oatmeal for the Complexion. Oatmeal contains a small amount of oil that is good for the skin. To make the hands soft and white, one of the best things is to wear at night large mittens of cloth rilled with bran or oat meal und tied closely at the wrist. A huly who had white, soft hands, con fessed that she hud a great deal of housework to do, and kept them 'vhite us any idler's by wearing bran mittens every night. The paste and poultices for the face owe much of their efficacy to their moisture, which dissolves the old coarse skin, and to their protection from the air, which allows the new skin to become tender and delicate. Oatmeal and paste is as efficacious as anything, though le>;s agreeable than the pastes made witb the whites of eggs, alum and rosewater. The alum astringes the ticsb and makes it firm, while the eggs keep it sufficient ly soft and tlie rosewater perfumes the mixture and makes the curd not so hard. R. O. Cravens, State Librarian, Wed nesday received from the State Con troller a warrant in the sum ot $084.78 for the purchase of books for the State Library. There was a sbooting affray at Bau Jose Wednesday night, in which a well known character at that place wantonly shot Dr. John Arnold. Young was intoxicated at the time, und the bullet was intended for an other party. Notice to Builders. Cl BALED PROPOSALS WILL BE RE © ceived at the office of Chas. W.
