THE FADELESS FLOWER
HENRY C. MANER
In our checkered journey through tlie world
There is a flower which greets our eye,
Like thai on desert sands unfurled
To cheer the traveler passing by.
Thai tlower Is not oi earthly mold;
>Tls opened by the voice of Heaven;
'Twill weep, but yet 'twill ne'er grow cold,
Even when the touch of scorn is given.
It blooms alike on desert sands,
As well as In the fertile plain;
And when 'tis crushed by cruel hands,
'Twill weep, then softly smile again.
'Tis found in darkest, midnight gloom,
As well as ln the noonday sun;
In pleasure's throng, and at the tomb
It's fragrant life has Just begun.
It is a gem that glitters bright
When all things else oorr»de and die;
To pity is Its sole delight-
Its fragrance to embalm a sigh.
Though rude winds blast its.gentle folds,
Or earth's simooms may dry its leaves,
Yet for those cruel winds It holds
The heart that lor another grieves.
When cures oppress aud men forsake-
E'en when a parent's love is dead-
Its hold around the heart 'twill take.
Ami shelter there the outcast head.
Its smile reflects another's pleasure,—
Its tears embalm another's woes;
To friends it nroves a golden treasure,
And a balsam to the wrath of foes.
'Twill live and bloom at Heaven's gate,
On the cold, gray day of death,
And round the throne 'twill gently wait
To give tlie angel spirit breath.
Then cultivate that, heavenly flower.
In storm or sunshine, tenderly;
It lives with calm yet holy power,—
The fadeless flower of Sympathy.
How a Granger Editor Wrestled with a
Lightning Rod man.
We never knew what a serious thing
it was to have a new house before. It
seems as if all the lightning rod men
within a radius of fifty miles can see
the roof, note the freshness of the
shingles, and make for us. Why, yes
terday, while in the garden sowing
parsnip seed, a man with a long beard
came swooping toward us, and climb
ing over the fence stepped up to us and
said, in the most familiar manner,
that we must be fond of rural pursuits.
We replied that we were not sure of
that, but we did like parsnips. He
smiled and added that our garden look
ed wonderfully well for the season.
This pleased us. We felt that we were
appreciated, and that a man was at
last found who looked upon our efforts
in the right spirit. We grasped his
hand and said: "Welcome, sir, I am
glad to know you. Look at those
onions, those peas, those radishes!
Ah, sir, think of the genius it takes to
bring them to such perfection. You
may indeed—" Here we were inter
upted. The stranger was gazing at the
roof or the house, and workiug his fin
gers frightfully. "See here, my
friend," he said familiarly, "I am
a—a lightning rod agent. You will
need —" We waited for no more.
We picked up a "clod of the valley!"
and rested it gently against the ear of
that lightning rod man for a second or
so, and when we stooped to pick it
up again after it had fallen, he was—
well, he had gone in the house and
was talking lightning rods to the in
mates in the most agreeable and fas
cinating manner. We have more re
spect for the whole fraternity now
than formerly.
Eloquence as It Shines in Texas.
Intimidate me, gentlemen of the
jury! me who first drew the breath of
life beneath the gigantic foliage of the
mighty Western forest oak! me, who
was nurtured by the Mississippi and
cradled by an earthquake! me, whose
playthings in childhood were the bear
and alligator and the double-engine
steamboat, antl who in more mature
years delighted to grapple with the
impending storm as it rushed wild and
furious from its mountain home?
Gentlemen of the jury, the idea is pre
posterous. This case is to plain to
argue. The witnesses all spoke doub
ly-distilled and clarified truth, but you
must be very careful to believe my
client wherever his statementsconflict
with the bold, "unconscionable" array
on the part of the plaintiff. Gentle
menof the jury you are too sensible to
pay any attention to anything except
what I have told you. You all look
like eminent divines or United States
Senators, and all the lawyers between
the Sabine and Rio Grande might
talk to you three weeks with right
law, law and evidence on their side,
and fail to convince you, since I have
instructed the Court what to charge
and you what to find. Gentlemen of
the jury, I leave my case in your
nands. Verdict for the defendant
without leaving the box.
Thecullud folks of Cincinati have
had a spelling match, in which, among
others, a good old aunty of eighty par
ticipated. The climax was reached
when the Rev. James Johnson, being
invited to spell "nosegay," started off
with a "n-o-u-s," then, seeing the fog
horn uplifted to blow him down, sud
denly corrected himself to "N-o-u-g
b-s-g-a-y," and stepped down and out
amid tremendous rounds of "Hi,dar!"
and applause.
A great amount of sickness prevails
on King's river, near Centreville, but
the diseases prevailing are not of a
malignant type. Measles seems to be
the principal disorder.
