From the Miner. 13th, The absence of the Mayor and City Treasurer leaves our city government rather short of officers and devolves the heft of tlie responsibility on the Marshal. On the 16th inst. we saw a petition signed by ten solid men of Northern Arizona petitioning the Comptroller of Currency to instruct them how to Sroceed to incorporate and establish a rational Bank at Prescott. Business men of Prescott think that two hun dred thousand dollars can be used to an advantage in a bank at this place. Immigrants just in from California over the Mojave route, complain bit terly of the high rates of toll imposed upon them while on the way. They say it costs almost as much for a fam ily to come from Sau Bernardino in their own conveyances as the stage company charges for passage. We have seen Mr. Hardy, proprietor of the toll-road, and he avers that he is hardly charging half of what the char ter allows and only enough to keep the road and water stations iv repair. He says that if he charged for water at his stations as they do on other roads, it would amount to more than the toll does, whereas he keeps the tanks in order without extra charge. An elderly man by the name of John Walker, who has been about the streets of Prescott for several months in a partially paralyzed condition, died on Sunday, June 13th, and was buried by order of Supervisor Kendall on Monday. We have been unable to learn much of his history other than that he was an old Califoruian and has lived in Downieville in that State. His apparent age was something over fifty years. Everybody about town will recollect that three or four weeks ago there was a little stir on account of some cinna bar ore that was brought in by some prospectors. Numerous tests were made and quicksilver found in all the rock. Mr. John Malcomb and Joe Stone arrived iv town Tuesday, hav ing been out to make locations. They brought in about twenty pounds of ore, which can be seen in the cabinet at Thome & Hutchinson's saloon, anil in the hands of Capt. J. P. Hargrave; also with H. A. Bigelow at the Nifty Saloon. The lode is situated on the Verde river, which it crosses several miles below Squaw Peak, and shows for a long distance on both sides of the stream. Malcolm and Stone report that there are large holes along the vein, evidently excavated by Indians who used the ore for paint. The ore Is identical in appearance with the pieces which have been found in the old ludian camps for years past in Yav apai county. J. C. Clancy, who was killed May 10th at the Crook mine, was the discoverer of the lode, aud in the location just made his interest has been preserved. The other fortunate locators are John Malcomb, Wm. Kent, Dan Cannon, J. P. Hargrave, John A. Rush, H. A. Bigelow, P. S. Babcock, Pat. Hamilton, Pete Reed. E. S. Pen well and Eli Fender. Now we need a man who understands working cinna bar ores to take hold in earnest, and the miners will not have to pay two dollars a pound for quicksilver much longer. Wilmington Items. [From the Enterprise, 2ith. | Another week of delightful weather. Louis Brial, the barber, has chick ens that chase rats. The schooner Columbia is now lying at the wharf discharging lumber. Lumber! lumber! Immense quan tities of it are being shipped through Wilmington daily. Mr. Wildman. of the Wilmington exchange, is steadily improving. He will have the hotel In "ship-shape" before long. Alex. Campbell; of the railroad shops, met with a painful accident yesterday by having a nail stuck into his foot. The shipments through this point have been very heavy for the last ten days. Imports —mixed merchandise and lumber; exports—mostly corn. J. De Barth Short is now at San Francisco purchasing lumber for the furniture manufactory to be estab lished at tills place; also for a lumber yard. A number of young ladies and gen tlemen are now rehearsing for a con cert, to be given iv a few weeks. It will be for the benefit of the Presbyte rian church. The Kaiorama is due this morning with a small cargo for this place. She discharged the most of her freight yes terday, which was railroad iron, at Santa Monica wharf. Messrs. Ballinger and Bullus, of Compton, have been engaged in press ing hay near town for several days. The hay grew on Col. Wilson's land, and although it is volunteer, and the season unfavorable, there is o/er a two-thirds crop. Messrs. Shepherd & Parthesius are progressing finely in arranging the machinery of tbe furniture manufac tory. Mr. Taffe, the Superintendent, arrived this morning on the Orizaba. This means that all the necessary ma chinery and tools have been secured, and he will now direct his efforts to wards starting up the shop as soon as possible. Some of our readers may think we are out of humor this week. Not a bit of it. We are as calm and mild as the most sheltered nook in Santa Monica "harbor." We wish every meritorious enterprise the greatest measure of suc cess. We are for Wilmington so far as Wilmington is right, and we are against Santa Monica only so far as Santa Monica is wrong. Our course has been* that of the true physician. We are acting upon the principle that "an ounco of preventive is worth a pound of cure." The Late Earthquakes in Asia. The Levant Herald of the 18th of May says that the earthquakes in va rious parts of Asia Minor on the 3d, sth and sth of May were more severely fatal than the accounts hitherto re ceived were justified in supposing. "According to the Broussa official journal,"a ids the Levant fferald,"th<i destruction of life and property in the inland divisions of that province was considerable. The village of Shelkli, in the district of Kara-Hissan, had out of 320 houses, 200 leveled with the ground and 100 so much shattered as to become uninhabitable. Thirty-one persons were killed outright in this village, and seventeen more or less injured. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. H. J. STEVENSON, Civil Engineer and Surveyor, U. S Deputy Land and Mineral Surveyor.
