TROPICAL FRUITS. Sau Francisco as a 4'oiis.nmer of 4lr augcx. Limes. Lemons uuil Cueonnut*. Few persons outside of those i in me diately engaged In the business are aware of the magnitude of the tropi cal fruit trade of Sau Francisco. The orange, the lime, the lemon and the eoeoaiml are the principle varieties re ceived in this market, and until the productive groves of Los Angeles commenced to yield generously, the supply was principally derived from Mexico and Tahiti. The Tahiti or angos usually come into market ahout the middle of March, and continue to arrive in large quantities up to Sep tember. A few straggling lots are re ceived thereafter, frequently as late as November and even December, but they lind slow sale. The California crop, coining mostly from Los Ange les, commences to arrive about tlie Ist of December, and the receipts contin ue large up to the close of tlie season, about June Ist. Large quantities of oranges arrive from Mexico, but the season Is short, lasting only from about the Ist of November to tlie last of December. The Mexican oranges, when picked and packed, arrive in good order, and as they 3re generally sold at lower rates than either the Tahiti and Mexican oranges, In ad dition to our own large crop, this mar ket can never be said to he glutted, and very often the suply is far inade quate. Considerable quantities and their way to the interior of the State, but the great bulk of them are con sumed here. An effort was made one season lo find an outlet across the mountains, and two car loads were shipped for Omaha, but the venture did not prove profitable, and was abandoned. This season oranges have not brought the very extreme figures realized in former years, but the gen eral average has been better The re ceipts of California oranges the last season amounted to upward of 5,300, --000, a few thousands of which came from Alameda, Contra Costa, Sonoma and Solano counties, and the balance from liOs Angeles county. This was the largest crop ever produced in Cal ifornia. The quantity annually im ported from Tahiti nnd Mexico will reach 5,000,000 in number. From Jan uary last up to the present date 2,403, --000 oranges have arrived from Tahiti, since January Ist; 15,000 limes have reached San Francisco from Tahiti and the quantity produced last sea son in California passes 80,000. Mex ico contributes large quantities of this fruit each year to our market. There were over (500,000 California lemons brought last season to the Sun Francisco market, As the California product has a very (hick rind, it is not so much In favor as some other kinds. The Sicily variety is most in demand by those who can afford to pay the difference in price. Lime juice has become a noticeable feature among the imports from Tahiti, 83 barrels Of the article having been re ceived since January. On arrival, the juice is taken from the barrels, the seed and pulp extracted, and the most of it finds its way in bottles to the sideboard, the dispensary, and the cook-rootß. Not a small quantity is sent beyond the Eastern line of Call* 1 fornia, to other markets. California can never entirely shut out the im portations of oranges from Tahiti, us when the California crop begins to fall off the Tahiti crop comes on. and near ly tills up the time until the next ap pearance of the Los Angeles product.— S. F. Bulletin, - ■- — A fatal explosion oecured about 7 o' clock Tuesday morning, on the rancho of Frank TTappere, near Collegeville, about nine miles from Stockton. The boiler of an engine, used in running a tbreshing machine exploied, and instantly killed Samuel Cookson and David Ritchie, blowing the engineer, Peter Mings, sixty feet from tbe scene of the accident, litterally scalding him from head to foot, but It is thought he is not fatally injured. Three others were seriously injured. A piece of the boiler, weighing 800 pounds, was thrown a distance of 17") feet. On Friday last a fire was set to a hits of brush on the farm of Henry Reeee, In Nevada county, ami the Humes spread into the woods and re sulted In ii irreat deal of damage. Fences ou Recce's farm, on Bickford and Grubb's ranch were burned, and considerable wood belonging to Mil ton Smith was also burned. The fire destroyed all the grass over which it passed. It burned over a sections sev eral miles square.
