The surf was so heavy at Santa Bar bara last Thursday morning that the steamer Mohongo snapped her cables two or three times aud had to leave half an hour earlier than she was ad vertised. The weather was intensely hot yes terday. The thermometer at the St. Charlea Hotel burst, and when Fisher & Thatcher's instrument registered 9(l° in the shade Fisher took a garden hose and cooled it off. The contractor for the grading of Fort street, between Third and Fouith streets, has sprinkled the grade, but the property owners look in vain for that six-ton roller. The Russian savants discovered a mirror on the highest point in the moon and at once concluded It was there for the purpose of tailing scien tific observations. It has since tran spired, however, that it was erected by the ladies of the moon for the pur pose of observing earth's fashions, more particularly the latest, the pin back dress. The Santa Barbara Press has the following: We havo to acknowledge the receipt of a piece of wedding cake, from Mr. and Mrs. Darrell, who wi re married yesterday afternoon by Rev. Dr. Abercrombie. Mr. Darrell la a resident uf Los Angeles; the bride was Mrs. Dugan of this city. We tender them our sincere good wishes. It is no wonder that Councilman Huber denounced tho gravel grading so bitterly at the last Council meet ing. Look ut Spring street, look at Fort street and other streets where the recent grades are mere dust beds. These streets, though lately graded, are enveloped in clouds of dust from early morn until late at night, when tiie travel ceases. The saloon at the Lafayette Hotel was opened last night with a gorgeous free lunch and a well stocked bar. The crowds that visited during the even ing attested the popularity of Messrs. Fluhr «& Oerson, the proprietors of the Lafayette, who have one of the pret tiest'bars in the city. The cigarstand is run by Mr. I. Cohn, and he has a tine stock of cigars and tobacco. He has displayed great taste iv the litt ing up, and will no doubt bo repaid in a profitable trade. Mr. O. Z. Moray, of the Depot Res taurant, keeps a travelers' home that is convenient and handy to all the trains, and where the stranger Is treated kindly and given first class meals. The traveler who stops with Morey can save the hack fare or long walk that is required in going to the hotels half a mile off. A lady from the East arrived lv town a lew days ago, seeking her daughter who bus been an inmate ot a house of ill fame in this city. The mother says that she h-ft her daugh ter a year ago at a seminary in Oak land, from which she eloped, and has since been leading an abandoned life, rihe is still a minor, and her mother is determined to reclaim her dead or alive. Strelitz, opposite the Pico House, and will be glad to exhibit the ma chine nt any time. He has had great success in introducing this machine elsewhere and we are confident he will succeed here. In our Council report last Friday we briefly noticed a communication from a Mr. Hutchinson, which complained of City Clerk Kremer. Since that time we have ascertained that the communication should not havo been entertained or read, as it concerned a special school assessment, and Mr. Kremer was neither Assessor nor Col lector. The City Clerk certainly can not answer all questions as to assess ment and collection of special taxes, and the Couucil should pay no atten tion to unreasonable complaints. Messrs. Pago & Gravel -have Just added to their mechanical triumphs the manufacture of a huge cross for the front of the new cathedral. It i 3 of wrought iron, gold gilt, and weighs 1,030 pounds. It is 18 feet high and 8 feet 6 inches broad, and when put in position will be in sight from all parts of the city. The Catholics deserve credit for their good judgment in pat ronizing home manufacturers, and Messrs. Page & Gravel have mude for themselves another speaking adver tisement of their mechanical genius. The Arab troupe performed last night at Turn-Verein hall to a good house. This troupe has not advertised itself or it would have succeeded bet ter. It com prises 6ome of the best gymnasts, acrobats, tumblers and con tortionists that we ever saw. They appear again next Sat urday night. The Chinese Joss House will be fin ished In a week. Three priests have arrived trom San Francisco, who are under contract to furnish the temple with gods of the most approved fash ion. On our visit yesterday they had finished a number of paper gods, rep resenting beasts, birds and fishes. They expect soon to have it orna mented with gods of the most astound ing shape and frightful appearance, when a grand festival will be given. A few complimentaries will be issued to the religious members of the Press. We have received ours, and are now studying Chinese theology. The Old Folks' Concert. To-morrow night we are to have a legitimate old folks' concert. These pleasant entertainments are the con necting link between the music of the past and the music of the present. The quaint costumes, the homely manner, the austerity of the music of tho past, will rebe produced. The old melodies which will be sung to-morrow night, are as dear to the musical ear to-day as they were when tho Germans sung Old Hundred or the Scotch Covenan ters sung Dundee. This old and loved music will be given to morrow night under all the inspiration of ancient costume, and with all the ability of our leading amateurs. We predict the most select and appreciative au dieucc ever assembled in Los Angeles. Dr. Aborn at the Backman House invites all who are afflicted with any form of disease to call for a free con sultation. SUNDAY READING. delected for Bun day's Hkr.vi.i>. WITHIN.-WITHOUT. Oh! there aro some whose discontent, and selfish hopes and fears, Would make this world so beautiful,a vsle of sighs and tears. They little know that love nnd truth and all the virtues fair, ' Must inward lie before they'rexoen, oroven felt elsewhere. And though Ond's beauties on the earth, are strewn on every side. They still ure passed unheeded by, and dl m by sin aud pride. D'thoso who b.isk in wisdom's smiles would draw aside the pall, And let the sun of knowledge shine upon the hearts of all, If they would on tho highway oast the stods of truth and love, Soon would tiio flowers of beauty bloom as in Ood's house above; And then Instead or this bright world being a vale of tear-i, The rainbow—Hope would span thegulf be tween our sighs aud tears. Within tho lonely hearts of all the lamp of love would burn, If filled with kindly oil, for which wo all of us do yearn; And many a heart would bo mado glad, nnd on oblivion's tomb, The flowers of love and kindness would lv in gorgeous beauty bloom. Then, oh remember! If the heart would see Ood's beauties rare, The truth nnd love must Inward llsjbefore they're seen elsewhere. The Patch of Sunlight. The day had been overcast; sudden ly the sun shone out, and a little patch of sunshine brightened the corner of the carpet. Immediately Tray got up and, with a wise look, trotted to the bright place und laid himself in it. "There's true philosophy," said John; "only one patch 111 the place, aud the sagacious little dog walks out of the shadow and rolls himself round in the brightness. Let not Tray's example be lost upon us, but wherever there shall shine one patch of sunlight, let us enjoy it." As you have stood some stormy day upon a yea cliff, and marked the giant billow rise from the deep to rush on with foaming crest, and throw it self thundering on the trembling shore did you ever fancy that you could stay lis course and hurl it back to the depths of the ocean? Did you ever stand beneath the leaden, lowering cloud and mark the lightning's leap asit .-hot and flashed, dazzling athwart the gloom, and think that you could grasp the belt and change its path? Still more foolMiand vain his thought who fancies that he can arrest or turn aside the purpose of God, Baying, "what is the Almighty that we should serve him? Let us break his bands asunder, and caxt away his cords from us!" Break his bands usundcr! How he that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh.— Dr. Guthrie Looking from his window one sum mer evening, Luther saw, on a tree near at hand, a little hird making ready for a night's rest. ''Look," said he, "how that little fellow preaches faith to us all. He takes hold of his twig, tucks his head under his wing, and goes to sleep, leaving God to think for him! If you want to know just what re ligion is worth, put it out at Interest. Invest largely, and you will have large returns. The advertisement of Dillon <te Ken ealy, the live dry goods firm on Main street, will be found in another col umn. These gentlemen are daily re ceiving large consignments of goods from New York and San Frak.cisco, which they have bought at panic prices and which they offer to (heir customers away below regular prices. An inspection.of their stock will con vince the buyer that they are flrst class stock-keepers. Everything is clean aud neat and arranged with taste and judgment. Their store is literally crammed with fashionable goods, and every taste can be suited. Prices defy competition, and t he quality is of the first class. All shoppers should give them a call.
